Anyone involved in a shark attack would be considered unlucky – but few could claim to have been as luckless as Sam Hawthorne.

The teenager survived a terrifying ordeal when he was bitten in the face by one of the killer beasts – in his own bedroom.

The 'attack' happened when the 14-year-old sleepwalked into a long-dead souvenir shark hanging on the wall of his nautical-themed room.

He was left with the creature embedded in his cheek and blood pouring from a wound. His mother, Susan, said: 'It was like something out of a horror film.'

Jaws struck in the middle of the night at the family home in Dudley, West Midlands.

Mrs Hawthorne was woken by her son's screams but arrived too late to fend off the deadly fish – a holiday souvenir.

'The shark must have been embedded in Sam's cheek for about 15 minutes and he was in a lot of pain,' she said.

Fortunately, Sam escaped with just a small scar. 'It was the most frightening experience of my life,' he said.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian swimmer survived a great white shark attack by poking the creature in the eyes as it dragged him through the water after badly savaging his left leg.

Jason Cull was swimming off a beach on Australia's southwest coast on Sunday when the four meter (12 feet) shark attacked.

"Initially I thought it was a dolphin," Cull told The Australian newspaper on Monday. "I just remember being dragged along backwards. I was trying to feel its gills but I found its eye and I stuck my finger in and that's when it let go."

Around 42 percent of attacks involve surfers or windsurfers, according to the U.S.-based International Shark Attack File. Australia had 12 shark attacks in 2007, none of them fatal, among 71 shark attacks worldwide that year.

'I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it's a convenient excuse,' Burgess said. Another contributory factor to the location of shark attacks could be global warming and rising sea temperatures. 'You'll find that some species will begin to appear in places they didn't in the past with some regularity,' he said.

Even the hoaxers are admitting that it isn't getting warmer and probably won't for years. But that's no reason not to panic. The nonexistent global warming phenomenon is now causing shark attacks.

There have been four fatal shark attacks already this year, after only one last year. Sure it could be due to more people in the water, an overabundance of seals resulting in an overabundance of sharks, or most likely, random chance. But the Guardian reports:

In the first four months of this year, there were four fatal shark attacks worldwide, compared with one in the whole of 2007, according to the International Shark Attack File at the Florida Museum of Natural History in Gainesville.

'The one thing that's affecting shark attacks more than anything else is human activity,' said Dr George Burgess of Florida University, a shark expert who maintains the database. 'As the population continues to rise, so does the number of people in the water for recreation.

Jellyfish are semi-transparent and feed on other fish, scavenge food and using their poisonous tentacles to stun their prey. There are about 70 different breeds of jellyfish that are poisonous to humans and they kill approx. 1000 times more frequently than all shark attacks combined.

Surfer Todd Endris needed a miracle. The shark — a monster great white that came out of nowhere — had hit him three times, peeling the skin off his back and mauling his right leg to the bone.

That’s when a pod of bottlenose dolphins intervened, forming a protective ring around Endris, allowing him to get to shore, where quick first aid provided by a friend saved his life.

“Truly a miracle,” Endris told TODAY’s Natalie Morales on Thursday.

The dolphins, which had been cavorting in the surf all along, showed up then. They circled him, keeping the shark at bay, and enabled Endris to get back on his board and catch a wave to the shore.

No one knows why dolphins protect humans, but stories of the marine mammals rescuing humans go back to ancient Greece, according to the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society.

A year ago in New Zealand, the group reports, four lifeguards were saved from sharks in the same way Endris was — by dolphins forming a protective ring.

American student Andrea Lynch shows her injuries after she was bitten by a 6ft bull shark as she floated in the sea off Florida.

The 20-year-old needed 100 stitches to 17 wounds after the attack on a boat trip to Sarasota Bay.

She said: "I reached back with my hand and felt all these gashes on me, and there was blood running down my body and pooling in the boat."

"I was screaming. There was blood all over."

Ms Lynch had 17 puncture wounds. Doctors said the shark's teeth missed all major organs but were close to her lungs.

A shark expert said Lynch may have been bitten by a roughly 6-foot-long bull shark.

She joked: "Either it didn't like the taste of human of it thought I was too boney."

"It's just one of those freak things. I wont hesitate to go back into the sea but not when it's dark."

Worldwide there are fewer than 100 shark attacks every year and just a handful of deaths.

Americans are stupid about risk, me included. It's nuts to fear plane crashes more than car crashes; loopy to be more afraid of online sexual predators than of lightning; irrational to pay more attention to shark attacks than to climate change. Doubtless there's something about our lizard brain stems that accounts for our poor choices in boogeymen, and thus for the media's pandering to our catastrophilia. But no vestigial pathway in our panic-hardwiring is an excuse for the Bush administration's current ramping up of its shameless exploitation of our fears.

Each of the 95 times President Bush mentioned Al Qaeda in his South Carolina speech last week, and each of the innumerable times in coming days that his disciplined minions will push the Iraq-is-about-Al-Qaeda button, the real message is, of course, 9/11. If we don't win in Iraq, the Bush case goes, the terrorists will kill you and your children in the air, at the mall and in your bed.

Scientists say conditions are right for the zone to exceed last summer's 6,662 sq miles (17,255 sq km).

The dead zone is an area of water virtually devoid of oxygen which cannot support marine life.

It is caused by nutrients such as fertilisers flowing into the Gulf, stimulating the growth of algae which absorbs the available oxygen.

The volume of nutrients flowing down rivers such as the Mississippi into the Gulf has tripled over the last 50 years.

The annual event has been blamed for shark attacks along the Gulf coast, as sharks, along with other highly mobile species, flee the inhospitable waters.
