Sweeter than your average hockey mom: Life hasn't been kind to Red. The pit bull once owned by Michael Vick survived untold abuse only to be stricken with numerous tumors. Momma, a cat with her own health issues, is keeping him company at the SPCA of Monterey County, Calif., while he undergoes chemotherapy.

The blessed birth of a wasp: An Ichneumon wasp injects its eggs via a tube through the bark of a tree and into the body of a host, the larva or pupa of another insect, in Lewiston, Maine. There the egg will hatch and the resulting wasp larva will feast on the unfortunate host, sort of like in "Aliens."

probably think it is rather silly. But it is becoming a major issue

British artist Paul "Moose" Curtis subjected San Francisco's Broadway tunnel to a treatment that left it looking decorated with some very demure graffiti. In fact, the figures adorning the tunnel walls - mostly of native plants - were clean spots created by applying stencils and power-washing the unspeakably sooty surfaces. Documentarian Doug Pray made a short, informative record of the process, the artist's thinking and the result. links.sfgate.com/ZDUK

<clipSource>http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/06/27/PK1Q11A70E.DTL</clipSource>

We are doomed! What will you do with it? Pay off the porn bill? Hit the Vegas strip? Stock up on water and freeze-dried meats and a nice Bowie knife in preparation for the apocalypse? Not bad, not bad. Of course, you could also spend it on:

No, not more porn-happy YouTube-ripoff sites. It's awe. The raw, delicious, mind-bending, perspective shattering, oh-my-God-what-the-hell-is-that kind of awe that makes your id tingle and your ego sigh.

Stare in wonder, then, at these photos. Let them seep in. Note for example, how the star known as Mira (a.k.a. "The Wonderful") has a tail that is 13 light years (about 80 trillion miles) long. See two massive, ancient galaxies mingle in a lover's embrace. Note how two of the most beautiful words in the English language might just be "whirlpool galaxy." Feel your brain whimper, but your soul expand. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2008/01/09/notes010908.DTL&nl=fix

Clip Source: www.badastronomy.com

Europa is the crescent on the lower left, and Io (obviously) is the one on the upper right. The problem is, where the normal matter is densest the dark matter is least dense, and vice-versa. That’s the opposite of what’s expected here. Perhaps dark matter particles interact with each other differently than we think, or there was some odd factor in the cluster collision that’s throwing a monkey wrench into the works.

<clipSource>http://www.badastronomy.com/bablog/2007/12/13/top-ten-astronomy-pictures-of-2007/</clipSource>

blood test for Alzheimer's disease

clipped by: tgkuo
clipper's remarks: Promising test to diagnose Alzheimer's disease by blood sample.

Clip Source: science.slashdot.org

The online edition of the British journal Nature Medicine has a study of a blood test for Alzheimer's disease, developed at Stanford. The test lights up if 18 specific molecules are present in a blood sample. Using samples of stored blood, the test proved 90% accurate in identifying people who had been diagnosed with the disease by other methods. It was also 87% accurate in distinguishing samples from people who do not have Alzheimer's but exhibit some other form of dementia. The numbers of samples involved were small — SFGate's writeup has some details. The Mercury News's article says the test's developers want to begin selling it to laboratories in 2008, for which FDA approval would not be required. They hope to get FDA approval for general use by 2009.

Artists have been drawing their female muses since the Renaissance (before that they weren't really all that adoring), but it's not my opinion I'm after.

The Eobabes (http://ecobabes.org/) are a group of environmentally aware women, who decided on printing a pinup calender, in order to "to make climate protection visible, talked about, and attractive." I read an article about them at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/11/26/MNG8HMK6G81.DTL and apparently the question of women degradation reared it's ugly head.

So what do you think? Is the Eobabe's campaign degrading to women or Empowering? How about neither?

Tags: ecobabes, facebook discussion, pinup girls, retro girlie art

<clipSource>http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=5855637474&topic=3492</clipSource>

What is obscene?

clipped by: Spelunkin
clipper's remarks: See also the "Howl" (sfgate.com) controversy in which Pacifica radio declines to read the poem on American radio because one fine from the FCC could wipe them out.

Clip Source: www.imdb.com

Kurtz:

In prosecuting the case, the ACLU learned that the president’s advance manual has little tolerance for free speech, saying: “As a last resort security should remove the demonstrators from the event.”

The front of the Ranks’ homemade T-shirts bore the international symbol for “no” superimposed over the word “Bush.” The back of Nicole Rank’s T-shirt said “Love America, Hate Bush.” On the back of Jeffery Rank’s T-shirt was the message “Regime Change Starts at Home.”

The ACLU said in a statement that a presidential advance manual makes it clear that the government tries to exclude dissenters from the president’s appearances. “As a last resort,” the manual says, “security should remove the demonstrators from the event.”
