The blessed birth of a wasp: An Ichneumon wasp injects its eggs via a tube through the bark of a tree and into the body of a host, the larva or pupa of another insect, in Lewiston, Maine. There the egg will hatch and the resulting wasp larva will feast on the unfortunate host, sort of like in "Aliens."

The media, which adore the U.N. and believe it is the last best hope of mankind, do not recognize the appeal of Ron Paul's no-global-government message. Most reporters probably think it is rather silly. But it is becoming a major issue among the conservative Republican grassroots. British artist Paul "Moose" Curtis subjected San Francisco's Broadway tunnel to a treatment that left it looking decorated with some very demure graffiti. It would be nice to think much of the ugliness is coming to an end.

It would be lovely to imagine the era of brutal Earth-mauling technologies, coal extraction and petroleum and industrial agriculture and strip mining and clear cutting and industrial fishing and all rest, all the more rapacious and unforgiving notions of how we exist on this planet are, after an era of unchecked capitalistic greed and waste and over-consumption right along with almost zero concern for consequences and the ethics of sustainability, finally moving toward obsolescence -- or rather, are quickly being shoved there by sheer necessity, brutal market forces, as supply runs dry and oil production slows and the Earth groans and spits and says, "enough already."

It is a pivotal time, and now more than ever, you get to choose the lens through which you want to watch it all unfold. Or implode.

Europa is the crescent on the lower left, and Io (obviously) is the one on the upper right. The plume you see is from the volcano Tvashtar, which has been active for quite some time now. If you look right at the bottom of the plume, you can see molten sulfur glowing red. Two other volcanoes appear to be making some noise as well.

In this composite image of the galaxy cluster Abell 520 using Chandra, CFHT, and the Subaru telescope, red is normal matter heated to millions of degrees, and blue shows the location of the dark matter. The problem is, where the normal matter is densest the dark matter is least dense, and vice-versa. That’s the opposite of what’s expected here. Perhaps dark matter particles interact with each other differently than we think, or there was some odd factor in the cluster collision that’s throwing a monkey wrench into the works.

blood test for Alzheimer's disease

The online edition of the British journal Nature Medicine has a study of a blood test for Alzheimer's disease, developed at Stanford. The test lights up if 18 specific molecules are present in a blood sample. Using samples of stored blood, the test proved 90% accurate in identifying people who had been diagnosed with the disease by other methods. It was also 87% accurate in distinguishing samples from people who do not have Alzheimer's but exhibit some other form of dementia. The numbers of samples involved were small — SFGate's writeup has some details. The Mercury News's article says the test's developers want to begin selling it to laboratories in 2008, for which FDA approval would not be required. They hope to get FDA approval for general use by 2009.

I find this a ridiculous age-old question. Artists have been drawing their female muses since the Renaissance (before that they weren't really all that adoring), but it's not my opinion I'm after.

The Eobabes (http://ecobabes.org/) are a group of environmentally aware women, who decided on printing a pinup calender, in order to "to make climate protection visible, talked about, and attractive." I read an article about them at http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/11/26/MNG8HMK6G81.DTL and apparently the question of women degradation reared it's ugly head.

So what do you think? Is the Eobabe's campaign degrading to women or Empowering? How about neither?

Barack Obama's attempt to "carve out a space that distinguishes him from Hillary" in anti-war California -- as a political commentator remarks in Carla Marinucci's story today -- may be an uphill climb if a fair proportion of unenthusiastic initial reader comments and Chronicle 2-cent opinions are any indication.

SF Gate's accompanying insta-poll is more encouraging for Obama, showing, at last count, 51% "more likely to vote for him" as a result of his call (full text here) to immediately begin withdrawal from Iraq.

Nicole and Jeff Rank, who were arrested in 2004 for refusing to remove or cover their anti-Bush T-shirts at a presidential rally, have just won an $80,000 settlement from the federal government. In prosecuting the case, the ACLU learned that the president’s advance manual has little tolerance for free speech, saying: “As a last resort security should remove the demonstrators from the event.”

The front of the Ranks’ homemade T-shirts bore the international symbol for “no” superimposed over the word “Bush.” The back of Nicole Rank’s T-shirt said “Love America, Hate Bush.” On the back of Jeffery Rank’s T-shirt was the message “Regime Change Starts at Home.”

The ACLU said in a statement that a presidential advance manual makes it clear that the government tries to exclude dissenters from the president’s appearances. “As a last resort,” the manual says, “security should remove the demonstrators from the event.”
