James McKoy, MD, a Honolulu-based rheumatologist and the chief of the pain service division at Kaiser Permanente in Hawaii, gives a lecture called "I Have Arthritis but I'm Still Sexy." He spoke with Health.com about how he helps his patients with arthritis reclaim their sex lives.

Young women, middle-aged women, older women—they develop arthritis and all of a sudden they see themselves as not sexually attractive. Even if they're not there yet, they're thinking about it.

So the physical and emotional concerns are very real when it comes to relating sexuality and arthritis. And many times nobody talks about that particular subject. I've had young women, and especially middle-aged women, who will tell me, 'I can't even imagine having a sexual relationship because it hurts to even hold my hand,' or 'Forget about sexual contact because it's too miserable to engage in,' or 'There'll be a lot of pain'.

If Democrats take back the White House, a US restriction on overseas family planning aid should be lifted. Meantime, Carol Roye says, watch out for a domestic version of the "global gag rule" in the Bush administration's final days.

Reproductive health advocates far and wide are hoping for a Democratic victory in November to unbind us all from the "global gag rule."

But now is not the time to look ahead. During the waning days of the Bush administration, the Family Research Council - founded in 1988 by Dr. James Dobson to lobby for such "traditional family values" as abstinence-only sexuality education and stamping out women's right to choose - is doing what it can to domesticate this destructive foreign-aid policy.

(AP) Skeptical states are shoving aside millions of federal dollars for abstinence education, walking away from the program the Bush administration touts for slowing teen sexual activity.

Barely half the states are still in, and two more say they are leaving.

Some $50 million has been budgeted for this year, and financially strapped states might be expected to want their share. But many have doubts that the program does much, if any good, and they're frustrated by chronic uncertainty that it will even be kept in existence. They also have to chip in state money in order to receive the federal grants.

A federal tally shows that participation in the program is down 40 percent over two years, with 28 states still in.

The abstinence-only grants have been controversial from the start.

An exploration of the intersection between religion and homosexuality in the U.S. and some religious have used its interpretation of the Bible to stigmatize the gay community. RT 1:36:48. We meet five Christian families, each with a gay or lesbian child. Parents talk about their marriages and church-going, their children's childhood and coming out, their reactions, and changes over time. The stories told by these nine parents and four adult children alternate with talking heads - Protestant and Jewish theologians, and with film clips of fundamentalist preachers and pundits and news clips of people in the street. They discuss scripture and biblical scholarship. A thesis of the film is that much of Christianity's homophobia represents a misreading of scripture, a denial of science, and an embrace of quack psychology. The families call for love.

The imprisonment of a gay soldier in the Brazilian army has sparked a nationwide debate about sexuality and discrimination in the world's largest Catholic country.

Army sergeant Laci Marinho de Araújo, revealed that he was gay in an interview with a national news magazine, Epoca, which featured the story on its front page. He and his partner, sergeant Alcântara de Figueiredo, have maintained a serious relationship since 1997 and have lived together for most of that time. They spoke about the prejudices against gay people in the Brazilian armed forces and how they had been forced to conceal their relationship from official view.

Brain scans have provided the most compelling evidence yet that being gay or straight is a biologically fixed trait.

The scans reveal that in gay people, key structures of the brain governing emotion, mood, anxiety and aggressiveness resemble those in straight people of the opposite sex.

The differences are likely to have been forged in the womb or in early infancy, says Ivanka Savic, who conducted the study at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Previous studies have also shown differences in brain architecture and activity between gay and straight people, but most relied on people's responses to sexuality driven cues that could have been learned, such as rating the attractiveness of male or female faces.

To get round this, Savic and her colleague, Per Lindström, chose to measure brain parameters likely to have been fixed at birth.

LONDON (Reuters) - Gay men and straight women share some characteristics in the area of the brain responsible for emotion, mood and anxiety, researchers said on Monday in a study highlighting the potential biological underpinning of sexuality.

Brain scans also showed the same symmetry among lesbians and straight men, the researchers wrote in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Brain scans of 90 volunteers showed that the brains of heterosexual men and homosexual women were slightly asymmetric with the right hemisphere slightly larger than the left, Ivanka Savic and Pers Lindstrom wrote. The brains of gay men and heterosexual women were not.

Then they measured blood flow to the amygdala -- the area key for the "fight-or-flight" response -- and found it was wired in a similar fashion in gay men and heterosexual women as well as lesbians and heterosexual men.

When straight women viewed a video of a naked woman doing calisthenics, on the other hand, their blood flow increased significantly.
