Acupuncture is as effective and longer-lasting in managing the common debilitating side effects of hot flashes, night sweats, and excessive sweating (vasomotor symptoms) associated with breast cancer treatment and has no treatment side effects compared to conventional drug therapy, according to a first-of-its-kind study presented September 24, 2008, at the American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology’s 50th Annual Meeting in Boston.

Findings also show there were additional benefits to acupuncture treatment for breast cancer patients, such as an increased sense of well being, more energy, and in some cases, a higher sex drive, that were not experienced in those patients who underwent drug treatment for their hot flashes.

The reduction in hot flashes lasted longer for those breast cancer patients after completing their acupuncture treatment, compared to patients after stopping their drug therapy plan.

One controversial program, called royalty-in-kind, allows energy companies to pay the government in gas and oil, instead of dollars.

According to the inspector general's report, the royalty-in-kind office of the MMS was rife with ''substance abuse and promiscuity.'' Certain fun-loving employees were known as the ''MMS Chicks'' by energy firm employees, who would generously invite the women to lively social events.

People always say the Bush administration is in bed with the oil companies, but it turns out to be literally true.

According to the Interior Department, some government officials in charge of collecting oil and gas royalties smoked pot, snorted cocaine and had sex with employees of big energy firms.

Meanwhile, the rest of us were getting screwed at the gas pump.

Three reports delivered last week to Congress portray ''a culture of ethical failure'' in which employees of the federal Minerals Management Service often accepted gifts from oil and gas interests, steered lucrative contracts to cronies and partied hard with those with whom they did business on behalf of the U.S. taxpayer.

The MMS collects about $10 billion annually in royalties from energy companies that drill offshore and on federally owned lands. Beside the IRS, it's one of

the biggest sources of government revenue.

"That had nothing to do with when we released our bill," she said. "That's just because we're back [in session] now" after Congress' five-week summer break.

"The oil and gas industry already benefits from taxpayer-funded subsidies, so the question is: how much has the scandal cost us in lost revenue?"

The scandal is a setback for the Bush administration and Capitol Hill Republicans, who for months have been pushing to increase domestic oil drilling in response to skyrocketing gasoline prices at the pump.

Republicans denied the scandal would deflate their party's push to increase drilling, saying that the alleged abuses, though serious, are isolated cases and shouldn't derail the nation's quest for more domestically produced oil.

"It's really important for us to put the bright light on this whole (oil) leasing process," Mrs. Pelosi said. She added that Democrats will work to end "the cozy relationship between the administrators at the Department of Interior who dealt with leases and the oil companies."

The investigation showed that between 2002 and 2006, 19 oil marketers - almost a third of the Denver office - received gifts and gratuities from oil and gas companies including Chevron Corp., Shell, Hess Corp. and Denver-based Gary-Williams Energy Corp.

"These individuals have eroded the trust the American citizens deserve to have in their public servants."

WASHINGTON — As Congress prepares to debate expansion of drilling in taxpayer-owned coastal waters, the Interior Department agency that collects oil and gas royalties has been caught up in a wide-ranging ethics scandal — including allegations of financial self-dealing, accepting gifts from energy companies, cocaine use and sexual misconduct.

In three reports delivered to Congress on Wednesday, the department’s inspector general, Earl E. Devaney, found wrongdoing by a dozen current and former employees of the Minerals Management Service, which collects about $10 billion in royalties annually and is one of the government’s largest sources of revenue other than taxes.

“A culture of ethical failure” pervades the agency, Mr. Devaney wrote in a cover memo.

One of the reports says that the officials viewed themselves as exempt from those limits, indulging themselves in the expense-account-fueled world of oil and gas executives.

The alleged transgressions involve 13 former and current Interior Department employees in Denver and Washington. Their alleged improprieties include rigging contracts, working part-time as private oil consultants, and having sexual relationships with - and accepting golf and ski trips and dinners from - oil company employees, according to three reports released Wednesday by the Interior Department’s inspector general.

The investigations reveal a “culture of substance abuse and promiscuity” by a small group of individuals “wholly lacking in acceptance of or adherence to government ethical standards,” wrote Inspector General Earl E. Devaney, whose office spent more than two years and $5.3 million on the investigation.

clipper's remarks: Which is why McCain chose her--for image only. Sarah Palin is McCain's 'Dan Quayle' (an election ploy that worked for GHWB), who would not interfere with his neoconservative agenda, including on social issues. In regards to oil drilling in Alaska:

Sen. McCain opposes ANWR drilling. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal in June, Gov. Palin said that when she met with Sen. McCain at a governor's conference in Washington, they discussed energy but parted company on the issue of drilling in ANWR, which he has opposed.

And in regard to her position on a social issue:

she supports abstinence-until-marriage programs, where teens are taught to refrain from sex until marriage and contraception is discussed only to explain its failings.

....."Christian conservatives" should see she did not do a very good job in her own family on that issue (i.e. Bristol's pregnancy and open under-age drinking), instead of giving her blind praise.

Focus Turns to Palin Record

In the five days since Sen. John McCain announced Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential running mate, she has been embraced by the right and pilloried by the left as a staunch conservative on social and economic issues.

But a look at her record as mayor of the small town of Wasilla and as governor of Alaska shows a politician more flexible in her ideology as she has juggled the needs of governing.

Gov. Palin has supported abortion restrictions and floated the idea of pulling books she considered offensive from a local library. But she also drew the ire of the religious right by shelving calls for new abortion limits, when she worried it would distract from her bipartisan deal to push through a new gas pipeline. She forced through property-tax cuts, but also raised taxes on oil companies. She has close relations with organized labor, backing union contracts on a state pipeline.

But Gov. Palin has also at times pushed more taxes and more spending.

What is GenePool?

It's a computer simulation where hundreds of virtual organisms evolve swimming skills. These organisms are called "swimbots". You can set mate preference criteria and thus influence what the swimbots consider as attractive qualities in potential mates. The most attractive swimbots get chosen most often to have little babies, and so their genetic building blocks propogate to future generations. Eventually, swimbots get better at pursuing each other, competing for food, and becoming babes to other swimbots. Local gene pools emerge which compete for sex and food (for energy to have more sex).
