ecause nothing makes you feel better about being a living, breathing, plastic-licking human on this planet today than the thought of a massive, eternal, slowly swirling vortex of noxious garbage the size of a continent and the shape of death itself, just floating out there in the middle of the Pacific ocean, mocking life, humanity, God. Mmm, gloomy.

Have you heard? Did you see? It's called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (or Pacific Trash Vortex, among other awesome nicknames) and it's a staggering phenomenon indeed and after reading up on it, I fully believe we must now revise our master list. Because surely this thing must be one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the grand sociocultural melting pot of our time. Except for the fact that it's, you know, revolting.

joining with the mountains of other plastic crap spewed out from our friends and enemies and neighboring nations worldwide? Is this not, in its way, profoundly moving?

Christ the Redeemer Statue Struck by Lightning

An amazing photograph was taken during a thunderstorm capturing Rio de Janeiro’s world-famous statue of Christ the Redeemer being struck by lightning.

The statue stands 39.6 metres (130 feet) tall, weighs 700 tons, and is located at the peak of the 700-m (2296-foot) Corcovado mountain in the Tijuca Forest National Park overlooking the city. A symbol of Christianity, the statue has become an icon of Rio and Brazil. As of 2007, Christ the Redeemer, was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Was this a omen from God warning us of the trouble ahead or just a really cool looking act of Mother Nature? Let there be lightning!

BRAZIL

Fernando de Noronha is an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, around 354 km offshore from the Brazilian coast. The islands of this archipelago are the visible parts of a range of submerged mountains. Consisting of 21 islands, the base of this enormous volcanic formation is 756 m below the surface. The main island, from which the group gets its name, makes up 91% of the total area.

Sydney Opera House

Sydney Opera House is located on Sydney Harbour and is one of the world’s most recognisable landmarks. As well as many touring theatre, ballet, and musical productions, the Opera House is the home of Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony. It is administered by the Sydney Opera House Trust, under the New South Wales Ministry of the Arts.

The Sydney Opera House was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973, but not formally completed until 1975 at a cost of$102 million. The original estimate in 1957 was only $7 million. So after much controversy Sydney was finally left with one of the most admired constructions in the world. In 2007 it was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it was selected among the 20 finalists on the 2007 New Seven Wonders of the World project.

Herostratus (Ancient Greek: ‘Ηρόστρατος) was a young man who set fire to the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (in what is now western Turkey) in his quest for fame on 21 July 356 BC. The temple was constructed of marble and was considered the most beautiful of some thirty shrines built by the Greeks to honor their goddess of the hunt and the wild. The temple was also one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Far from attempting to evade responsibility for his act of arson, Herostratus proudly claimed credit in order to immortalize his name in history. In order to dissuade similar-minded fame-seekers, the Ephesean authorities not only executed Herostratus, but condemned him to a legacy of obscurity by forbidding mention of his name under the penalty of death. Obviously, this harsh stipulation did not preclude Herostratus from achieving his goal, as the ancient historian Theopompus recorded the event and Herostratus in his history.

1. The smell: You can always tell when someone hasn't really been to New Jersey, because they'll whine about the smell, claim the whole state stinks, and tell pathetically false stories about how they almost barfed at a rest stop because of the odor. My guess is these people probably need a refresher course in personal hygiene, because I promise you the whole state doesn't smell. The area around the turnpike usually smells—it's an indefinable, vaguely petroleum-based aroma with hints of landfill dancing on the breeze—but that's about it. People, enough with the smell, okay? It's really not that bad. Plus, if you piss off the smell, it could get ugly. Just watch this:
