clipper's remarks: Serch engine optimization tutorial. I recently caught wind of a rather controversial search engines rankings video today - created by a guy named Dave Kelly. It plainly shows some truly unreal organic rankings that he's been achieving. These are one-page sites he's ranking in the top 1st, 2nd & 3rd spots for keywords that have massive competition. One example in the video was where his site was #1 for out of 577 Million results.

Yahoo! pretty much takes the cake on this one with about 75% of searches performed on Yahoo! in August resulted in a referral. By comparison, searches on Google result in a referral about 65% of the time and searches on MSN/Live result in a referral about 59% of the time.

I’m not sure if you know what book crossing is. According to wikipedia Bookcrossing is defined as

“the practice of leaving a book in a public place to be picked up and read by others, who then do likewise”. The term is derived from BookCrossing.com, a free online book club which began and encouraged the practice.There are also short hand terms for BookCrossing which are: BC, BCing, or BXing. A person who engages in bookcrossing is called a bookcrosser or BookCrosser”.

The idea is very simple but extremely nice. I will definitely try it as soon as possible.

The original BookCrossing club has over 500,000 members. Its stated goal is to “make the whole world a library”. One of the main ways the project has been funded is by member donations, though funding has also come from the online BookCrossing supply store and advertisements for a number of book-related websites on BookCrossing.com.

Gizmo Call is a nice step forward in VoIP, because users don’t need to download a big client and run a traditional installer. They don’t even need to setup an account. After the Flash plugin is installed, users can immediately make calls - albeit limited to 5 free minutes of calling per day “to just about any phone number”. They can get 10 minutes free calling if they register with an email address and can also buy Call Out minutes. Besides PSTN phones, Gizmo Call users can call for free Google Talk users, Windows Live users, Gizmo Project users and any SIP address/device. There’s also a feature enabling users to customize their CallerID, so when they make a web call it can appear to come from their mobile or office phone. Plus, being a browser-based service, users can integrate Gizmo Call into their blogs and social network pages.

You do need to download a 1MB Flash plugin for Gizmo Call to work, so it’s not a download-free browser app. However it’s a once-only install and it lowers the bar for consumers wanting to start using VoIP.

Readwriteweb reports: VoIP company SIPphone is at DEMO today, where it is launching Gizmo Call - an online service that makes VoIP phone calls possible from any web browser. It works via a Flash plugin, which enables users to make calls simply by typing a phone number into a text-field in a browser. Users can also use URLs like http://gizmocall.com/18005551212 (that link is an example only and will not work). Gizmo Call is separate from SIPphone’s other app, The Gizmo Project, which is a download VoIP app like Skype.

Questions you really need to ask before accepting a job…

When hunting for a job, most candidates are so busy trying to sell themselves, that they don’t research the company thoroughly enough to see if they’re a good fit or not.

It’s very important for a candidate to ask questions about the company. If you’re looking for a job, you should definitely try to find out if working at the company will drive you crazy or not

Here are some questions that you should try to get answered. Many of these are not things that you can ask during your interview. The most valuable sources of information are usually friends who are currently working in the company, who know the company somehow, or who are working in the industry.

1. What type of work will I be doing?
Establish this one early on. Ask for examples. We recently hired two people to conduct phone surveys. Anyone expecting to create policy reports would have been disappointed. So often, the job description is just a vague generalization of something the HR manager thought should be mentioned. And, in the real world, you will never get exactly what you expect. But it’s always better to ask: for a while, our Brand Management department was looking for people in different areas, although the designation for each was the same.

Well, here are the questions:

2. Who will be on my team, and what is their background?
You might be able to find this information online and the answer to this might not really change too much for you. But good people are good to be around. If very talented and smart people are on your team, work is more likely to be fun, you are more likely to meet people you’ll enjoy being around, and at the very least, you’ll pick up something. Good team members indicate that the team is capable, but the lack of them might also indicate that you will have the opportunity to build the team’s capabilities. (Ahem: assuming that you’re that good, of course!)
