Nemo's nose helps find way home

The scent from the leaves of one coastal plant Xanthostemon, a kind of myrtle attracted them. They also found scents, such as the leaves from the Melaleuca Nervosa, a kind of paperbark which is another type of myrtle, that repelled them. They say this could have implications regarding tree planting and reforestation near marine habitats.

The animated clownfish Nemo may have found his way home a lot sooner if he had trusted his nose

research by scientists from Australia, France and the US, has revealed that a species of clownfish (Amphiprion percula) uses its olfactory senses to help it locate a suitable habitat.

The findings appear in the latest edition of the Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Professor Geoff Jones of James Cook University, Townsville, says that although previous research has shown clownfish can smell, these new findings identify the scents they are using.

"We've actually narrowed down the chemical signals that they may be using to find their home."

Almost all exhibited a strong preference for water collected from reefs that contained islands.

The researchers then used water that contained the scent of an anemone or leaves from coastal plants such as Xanthostemon.

When given a choice between scented or unscented water the fish spent more than 90% of their time in the scented water.

And the taste of calcium? "Calcium tastes calciumy," Tordoff said. "There isn't a better word for it. It is bitter, perhaps even a little sour. But it's much more because there are actual receptors for calcium, not just bitter or sour compounds."

The researchers measured the calcium preferences of 40 different strains of mice. "Most mice dislike calcium, but we found a very unusual strain that drinks it avidly," Tordoff said. "By comparing the genes of this strain with other strains, we were able to identify the two calcium taste genes."

"It remains to be seen if what we have discovered in mice—the existence of two calcium taste genes-- holds true for humans,"

We don't know if we have the same forms of genes as the mice have, but it seems pretty likely they have the same function."

The modification of the sense of taste using genetic research could be an indispensable, widespread tool to increase nutrition

One such study, published in 2004, asked more than 100 pregnant women to report on their senses at several points in their pregnancy, and 76 percent of respondents experienced a change in smell or taste [source: Nordin et al]. Two-thirds of the women reported increased smell sensitivity, but they also reported distortions in smells, phantom smells and abnormal tastes, including increased bitter sensitivity and decreased salt sensitivity [source: Nordin et al.]. Women experienced these effects mostly during the first trimester of pregnancy, though a smaller percentage reported changes at a later stage of pregnancy as well. After pregnancy, all changes to smell and taste perception disappeared.

One supermarket chain thought pregnant women would make better wine tasters.

(Nanowerk News) Engineers have created a tiny motorized positioning device that has twice the dexterity of similar devices being developed for applications that include biological sensors and more compact, powerful computer hard drives.

The device, called a monolithic comb drive, might be used as a "nanoscale manipulator" that precisely moves or senses movement and forces. The devices also can be used in watery environments for probing biological molecules,

The monolithic comb drives could make it possible to improve a class of probe-based sensors that detect viruses and biological molecules. The sensors detect objects using two different components: A probe is moved while at the same time the platform holding the specimen is positioned. The new technology would replace both components with a single one - the monolithic comb drive.

The innovation could allow sensors to work faster and at higher resolution and would be small enough to fit on a microchip.

The human brain could become a battlefield in future wars, a new report predicts, including 'pharmacological land mines' and drones directed by mind control

Rapid advances in neuroscience could have a dramatic impact on national security and the way in which future wars are fought, US intelligence officials have been told.

In a report commissioned by the Defense Intelligence Agency, leading scientists were asked to examine how a greater understanding of the brain over the next 20 years is likely to drive the development of new medicines and technologies.

They found several areas in which progress could have a profound impact, including behaviour-altering drugs, scanners that can interpret a person's state of mind and devices capable of boosting senses such as hearing and vision.

The report highlights one electronic technique,

Why women on pill pick Mr Wrong

MILLIONS of women pick the wrong man to fall in love with because of how the contraceptive pill changes their senses, a new study has found.

Contraceptive pills taken by tens of millions of women around the world can disrupt the innate ability to sniff out a genetically compatible partner.

Normally women are instinctively attracted, via their sense of smell, to men who have a dissimilar genetic makeup.

A group of about 140 genes in an area called the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) - which helps build proteins involved in the body's immune response - also plays a key role in odour through interaction with skin bacteria.

"The results showed that the preferences of women who began using the contraceptive pill shifted toward men with genetically similar odours," said Roberts.

The research not only suggested that taking the pill could induce women to pick Mr Wrong, but pointed to the potential to wreak havoc in couples.
