You live in a nation of gun owners and hunters. You live in a country where one out of three girls get pregnant before they are 20. You live in a nation of C students. Knocking Bush for being a C student only endeared him to the nation of C students. Knock Palin for having kids, for having a kid who's having a baby, for anything that is part of her normalness -- a normalness that looks very familiar to so many millions of Americans -- well, you do this at your own peril. Assuming she's still on the ticket two weeks from now, she will be a much tougher opponent than anyone expects.

Tags: palin, michael moore

<clipSource>http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2008/09/whats-normal.html</clipSource>

The Economist on McCain's choice of Palin

clipped by: lp97702
clipper's remarks: Remember the Economist wrote a piece not too long ago called "A case for John McCain."

Clip Source: www.economist.com

The woman from nowhere

THE most audacious move of the race so far is also, potentially, the most self-destructive. John McCain’s choice of Sarah Palin as his running-mate has set the political atmosphere alight with both enthusiasm and dismay.

Mr McCain’s appointment also raises more general worries about the Republican Party’s fitness for government. Up until the middle of last week Mr McCain was still considering two other candidates whom he has known for decades: Joe Lieberman, a veteran senator, independent Democrat and Iraq war hawk, and Tom Ridge, a former governor of Pennsylvania (a swing state with 21 Electoral College votes) and the first secretary of homeland security. Mr McCain reluctantly rejected both men because their pro-choice views are anathema to the Christian right.

Tags: mccain, palin, economist

<clipSource>http://www.economist.com/world/unitedstates/displaystory.cfm?story_id=12066224</clipSource>

Brave New World of Digital Intimacy

clipped by: wildcat
clipper's remarks: It is easy to become unsettled by privacy-eroding aspects of awareness tools. But there is another — quite different — result of all this incessant updating: a culture of people who know much more about themselves. Many of the avid Twitterers, Flickrers and Facebook users I interviewed described an unexpected side-effect of constant self-disclosure. The act of stopping several times a day to observe what you’re feeling or thinking can become, after weeks and weeks, a sort of philosophical act. It’s like the Greek dictum to “know thyself,” or the therapeutic concept of mindfulness. (Indeed, the question that floats eternally at the top of Twitter’s Web site — “What are you doing?” — can come to seem existentially freighted. What are you doing?) Having an audience can make the self-reflection even more acute, since, as my interviewees noted, they’re trying to describe their activities in a way that is not only accurate but also interesting to others: the status update as a literary form.

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

On Sept. 5, 2006, <A title="More articles about Mark E. It catalyzed a massive boom in the site’s growth. A few weeks after the News Feed imbroglio, Zuckerberg opened the site to the general public (previously, only students could join), and it grew quickly; today, it has 100 million users

Clip Source: www.nytimes.com

In essence, Facebook users didn’t think they wanted constant, up-to-the-minute updates on what other people are doing. Yet when they experienced this sort of omnipresent knowledge, they found it intriguing and addictive. Why?

Social scientists have a name for this sort of incessant online contact. They call it “ambient awareness.” It is, they say, very much like being physically near someone and picking up on his mood through the little things he does — body language, sighs, stray comments — out of the corner of your eye.

Tags: brave new world, digital intimacy

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/07/magazine/07awareness-t.html?ex=1378353600&en=2feb7263ab2a0bd4&ei=5124</clipSource>

Music Taste and Personality

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: Leonard Cohen Lovers: intelligent, sensitive, extremely sexy, beautiful, creative, at ease with themselves, arrogant bastards

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

We are connected with it by national, religious, linguistic, natural, economic, and geographical bonds."[10]

The purpose of post-World War I's League of Nations was to prepare those liberated from the Turks for independence. Once the indigenous populations demonstrated their ability to assume control, the mandates given to the war's victorious superpowers were supposed to be self-terminating. For the international community, justice for the Arabs meant guaranteeing their economic, civil, and religious rights. Awarding the Arabs any form of self-government within Palestine was precluded by British commitments to the Jews under the Balfour Declaration, which had been incorporated in the mandate of the League of Nations.[11]

Clip Source: globalpolitician.com

At this point in history, post-World War I, political pressure caused the international community to endorse the Jewish desire for national self-determination and acc epted that the Jewish people had a justifiable claim to return to their homeland. Significantly, in this recognition, the Balfour Declaration and the Mandate under the League of Nations make no mention of Palestinians as a separate and distinct people with their own national rights. The indigenous people were regarded as residents whose political identity was connected to the larger Arab nation.[9]

For the British, the matter was quite clear: Palestine was not a state but the name of a geographical area. This had been reinforced by the indigenous Arabs themselves.

When the First Congress of Muslim-Christian Associations met in Jerusalem in February 1919 to select Palestinian Arab representatives for the Paris Peace Conference, they adopted the following resolution:

Arthur Balfour
British Foreign Secretary

Tags: israel, league of nations, balfour declaration, palestinians

<clipSource>http://globalpolitician.com/25171-united-nations-un-israel</clipSource>

Musical taste "deines personality"

clipped by: thekay

Clip Source: news.yahoo.com

                        LONDON (Reuters Life!) -
Fans of classical music and jazz
are creative, pop lovers are hardworking and, despite the
stereotypes, heavy metal listeners are gentle, creative types
who are at ease with themselves.

"People often define their sense of identity through their
musical taste, wearing particular clothes, going to certain
pubs, and using certain types of slang," North said.

"It's not surprising that personality should also be
related to musical preference."

The study concluded that jazz and classical music fans are
creative with good self-esteem, although the former are much
more outgoing whereas the latter are shy.

Country and western fans were found to be hardworking and
shy; rap fans are outgoing and indie lovers lack self-esteem
and are not very gentle.

Those who like soul music can take heart as the research
concluded they are creative, outgoing, gentle, at ease with
themselves and have a high self-esteem.

<clipSource>http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080905/lf_nm_life/britain_music_dc</clipSource>

Marxists/Socialists/Communists for Obama

clipped by: Smoke TNT
clipper's remarks: I've noticed that communists are rarely good at 'spalling'.

Clip Source: my.barackobama.com

This group is for self-proclaimed Marxists/Communists/Socialists for the election of Barack Obama to the Presidency. By no means is he a true Marxist, but under Karl Marx's writings we are to support the party with the best interests of the mobilization of the proletariat. Though the Democratic Socialists of America or the Communist Patty of America may have more Socialististic values, it is pointless to vote for these candidates due to the fact that there is virutally no chance they will be elected on a National level. One common element to all eating disorders including EDNOS is low self-esteem.Those with EDNOS characteristics may constantly shift between different eating disorders. This shifting or switching can complicate providing a specific professional medical diagnosis for the patient.

Clip Source: www.eatingdisordersonline.com

Criteria for EDNOS includes the following symptoms

*For females, all of the criteria for anorexia nervosa are met except that the individual has regular menses.
*For males and females all of the criteria for anorexia nervosa are met except that, despite significant weight loss, the individual's current weight still maintains a normal range according to BMI classification.
*For males and females all of the criteria for bulimia nervosa are met except that the binge eating or inappropriate compensation mechanisms occur at a frequency of less than twice a week or for a duration of less than 3 months.
*For males and females the regular use of inappropriate compensatory behaviors by an individual of normal weight after eating small amounts of food. For example: self-induced vomiting after the consumption of two biscuits.

*For males and females repeatedly chewing and spitting out, but not swallowing, most of ones potential daily consumption.

Tags: ed, ednos, eating disorder

<clipSource>http://www.eatingdisordersonline.com/explain/ednos.php</clipSource>

Gratuitous Insults

clipped by: abailart
clipper's remarks: Any ideas on how we can help such folk?

Clip Source: www.dr-smith.info

I have been asking a series of questions about self-sabotaging behaviors. The vast majority of the replies have been constructive and incredibly helpful. But there is one type of reply that is truly self-sabotaging and gives me pause – it involves a gratuitous insult of some kind. When I try to point out that the insult is counter to their interests the person tends to respond with more insults. In a recent exchange, when I asked for clarification of a response I received “If you don’t understand what I mean, then that is probably your problem.” When I pointed out that I found his reply mildly insulting I received “you think you know me enough to think that I am insulting you, which I am not” – as if to say “you don’t get to decide when you feel insulted, I do”.

research indicates that most of these people are white, males in their late thirties to early fifties and consultants in either a one man or small operations

Tags: gratuitous insults

<clipSource>http://www.dr-smith.info/the-gratuitous-insult-%e2%80%93-how-do-you-respond/</clipSource>

Music tastes link to personality

clipped by: JediKnut
clipper's remarks: Interesting article. Ossetia) is condemned.

And for you hypocritical democrats who want Obama, he already stated he would do the very same thing, invade Pakistan for the "war on terrorism"! (Objective commentary based on principle must spare none who violate it).

The hypocrisy is self evident, yet the MSM does not expose it.

The wars will NEVER end until the people make the government stop and refuse to support ANY leader who violates the very restrictive principles of just war and the Constitution.

Clip Source: www.reuters.com

Pakistanis furious over U.S.-led border raid

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan is determined to defend its territorial integrity, the country's foreign minister said on Thursday, as anger mounted over a raid by U.S.-led troops on a remote border village.

The pre-dawn helicopter-borne ground assault on the village of Angor Adda on the Afghan border on Wednesday was the first known incursion into Pakistan by U.S.-led troops since the invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.

Twenty people, including women and children were killed, officials said, and a new civilian government, more sensitive to public anger than the previous government, summoned the U.S. ambassador to lodge an angry protest.

Foreign Minister Shah Memood Qureshi said the raid was a shameful violation of rules of engagement agreed with U.S.-led forces in Afghanistan.

"We will not compromise on any violation of our sovereignty," Qureshi told the National Assembly.

Tags: bush, pakistan, war on terorrism, national sovereignty

<clipSource>http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSISL7139220080904</clipSource>
