'That is exactly what we saw.'

'Our sense of our physical self comes from what we're born with and the constant messages the brain receives from all parts of our bodies. We've now shown that this is a two-way street. The mind can also influence the body's tissues. We have demonstrated that the mind can control a specific body part.'

Clip Source: www.sciencedaily.com

The rubber-hand illusion involves placing a rubber hand in front of the participant in their field of vision and near to their real hand. The real hand is then concealed behind a partition. If the real hand and the rubber hand are touched or stroked in the same way and at the same time, the participant tries to co-ordinate what they are feeling (their own hand being stroked) and seeing (the rubber hand being stroked). They can experience a shift in where they believe their hand is to the position of the rubber hand.

‘People experience this weird illusion,’ says Dr G Lorimer Moseley of the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at the University of Oxford. ‘They will say things like, “I feel like I own the rubber hand”.’

Body ownership is a fundamental aspect of self-awareness – the feeling that your body belongs to you and is constantly there.

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/08/080830192456.htm</clipSource>

ΑΝΑΠΤΥΞΗ

clipped by: panosgr

Clip Source: www.huffingtonpost.com

Empathy and Social skill.

1. Self-awareness: the ability to recognize and understand your moods, emotions, and
Never allow anything to remain in your life that is causing the unrest. Think of every detail of your life that is causing the disintegration as something to fight against, not as something you should allow to remain. Ask the Lord to put awareness of Himself in you, and your self-awareness will disappear. Then He will be your all in all. Beware of allowing your self-awareness to continue, because slowly but surely it will awaken self-pity, and self-pity is satanic. Don’t allow yourself to say, "Well, they have just misunderstood me, and this is something over which they should be apologizing to me; I’m sure I must have this cleared up with them already." Learn to leave others alone regarding this. Simply ask the Lord to give you Christ-awareness, and He will steady you until your completeness in Him is absolute.

<clipSource>http://www.rbc.org/utmost/index.php</clipSource>

An Anthropological Introduction to YouTube

clipped by: Djiezes
clipper's remarks: a very interesting lecture (55m)

More on this & digital etnography here: http://mediatedcultures.net/

Clip Source: www.youtube.com

An anthropological introduction to YouTube

more info: http://mediatedcultures.net

0:00 Introduction, YouTube's Big Numbers

5:53 The Machine is Us/ing Us and the New Mediascape

17:04 5% of vids are personal vlogs addressed to the YouTube community, Why?

17:30 YouTube in context. into powerful ally. Using a dynamic self-defense technology known as
adrenal stress response training, author Bill Kipp has helped literally
thousands of men, women and children face their fear head-on, control it
and harness it as the tremendous source of power nature intended it to be.
Here he describes how the FAST Defense system develops awareness and
communication skills that can help you avoid being targeted as a victim,
desensitize you to the verbal abuse and threats that attackers use to
control their victims, and equip you with verbal defense skills that will
stop most altercations before they ever become physical. Finally, he
reveals how this fast, effective, scenario-based training methodology
empowers you to unleash the fearsome force of adrenaline to fight for your
life when all else fails. 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, soft cover, photos, 272 pp.

The mental noise keeps playing and replaying, but I’m too bored to pay any more attention to it. And, as the clutter of thoughts becomes irrelevant, so too does the self, or what Joshu Sasaki Roshi calls the “I am” self. There is no loss of awareness, of consciousness. There is still the sensation of the body sitting still, or walking, and there is still the sound of the mind’s chattering - but there is no self attached to any of it. No observer, no observed. No mystery, nothing hidden, no question, no answer, every question its own answer. In every moment, birth, life and death, but no one to be born, live or die. No ending of pain, but no suffering arising from pain. No ending of pleasure, but no attachment to pleasure, only an abiding joy in it, in everything, the joy of awakening, of arriving where we have always been.

Tags: awareness, zen, boredom

<clipSource>http://the-urban-monk.livejournal.com/581303.html</clipSource>

Dare to Be Yourself - from Psychology Today

clipped by: missmartini
clipper's remarks: I was reading my friend feed stream and someone posted a link to this article. I had some insane realizations this weekend and this is definitely among the list. Though, this is one I think we deal with on and off again through our lives - being authentic and having a core self.
Definitely fascinating and interesting.

Clip Source: www.psychologytoday.com

Dare To Be Yourself

A sense of authenticity is one of our deepest psychological needs, and people are more hungry for it than ever. Even so, being true to oneself is not for the faint of heart.

By: Karen Wright

It starts innocently enough, perhaps the first time you recognize your own reflection.

It's also a cornerstone of mental health. Authenticity is correlated with many aspects of psychological well-being, including vitality, self-esteem, and coping skills. Acting in accordance with one's core self—a trait called self-determination—is ranked by some experts as one of three basic psychological needs, along with competence and a sense of relatedness.

"It's some kind of epidemic right now," says Stephen Cope, author of Yoga and the Quest for the True Self. "People feel profoundly like they're not living from who they really are, their authentic self, their deepest possibility in the world. The result is a sense of near-desperation."

Tags: psychology, self, awareness, authenticity, be

<clipSource>http://www.psychologytoday.com/rss/pto-20080420-000001.html</clipSource>

ls sexual deception a male trait?

clipped by: balthazarus
clipper's remarks: "Future studies will need to evaluate the potential for male mate choice copying and deception in natural populations, because male mate choice copying cannot be evolutionarily stable if males always have an opportunity to deceive rivals," they said. to trick rivals about where they hide food. Male pied flycatchers also may

What happens when busyness and sociability leave no room for solitude? The ability to engage in introspection, I put it to my students that day, is the essential precondition for living an intellectual life, and the essential precondition for introspection is solitude. They took this in for a second, and then one of them said, with a dawning sense of self-awareness, “So are you saying that we’re all just, like, really excellent sheep?” Well, I don’t know. But I do know that the life of the mind is lived one mind at a time: one solitary, skeptical, resistant mind at a time. The best place to cultivate it is not within an educational system whose real purpose is to reproduce the class system.

<clipSource>http://www.theamericanscholar.org/su08/elite-deresiewicz.html</clipSource>

A Way To Be In The World

clipped by: zalisan
clipper's remarks: This being Sunday, the sun shinning, I find myself grateful for all that is. Experience self-esteem wallop.

2. Use the exercises that follow to switch your way of seeing from your left-brain hemisphere to the right, where you can see beauty more clearly.

3. Allow yourself to absorb the wallop and ensuing emotions without resistance. Notice that while positioned in right-brain awareness, the wallop is unreal, and your beauty is real. This may take time, but hey, that's all you've got.

4. Return continually to this place of acceptance, right through the moment of your own demise.

Fortunately, there are reliable ways of doing this. Our culture avoids them, so they may sound very odd to you. That's fine: Just try the techniques on the next page, remembering that the objective isn't to look different (changing your body), but to look differently (changing your state of awareness).

Method 1: Draw upside down

Method 2: Open Your Focus

Method 3: Feel the rhythm of life

<clipSource>http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/personal/07/25/self.esteem.repair/index.html</clipSource>

Mirrors Don’t Lie.. : -)

clipped by: einbar
clipper's remarks: “When people are made to be self-aware, they are likelier to stop and think about what they are doing,” Dr. Bodenhausen said. “A byproduct of that awareness may be a shift away from acting on autopilot toward more desirable ways of behaving.” Physical self-reflection, in other words, encourages philosophical self-reflection, a crash course in the Socratic notion that you cannot know or appreciate others until you know yourself.
