Google Chrome is from 2010 — and not in a good way

Google’s new Chrome Web browser/operating system/panopticon program has a nifty logo that may betray more about the software than Google intended. Sure, it looks mostly like the illegitimate love child of a Pokeball and a the 1980s Simon pocket electronics game, but the blue all-seeing eye is the real giveaway.

It’s from SAL 9000, the effeminate successor to HAL 9000 as seen in 2010: The Year We Make Contact. SAL, like HAL, was a sentient computer that hopefully wouldn’t turn into a paranoid psychopath like her older brother, which makes you wonder about the subtext of Google’s ever-expanding, ever-learning search algorithms. If Google ever “wakes up,” you better hope it sounds more like Candice Bergen than Douglas Rain.

This may have been said already, but I definitely agree with the theory that Batman is intended to be the American ideal concept of Big Brother being used in an effective non-abusive manner. Batman as the American ideal is meant to contradict directly with the Big Brother as it exists within the States today. We can see the difference when we see that Batman chose to relinquish the powers of the all-seeing eye after it had served its purpose; in contrast, the American invasion of privacy is more or less permanent.

Church Bells Stolen for Scrap

A small village in northeast Hungary is trying to find three stolen church bells before scrap metal dealers destroy them.

The bells, weighing more than 535 pounds, were removed from the church belfry apparently for their copper content, the Hungarian news agency MTI reported Wednesday.

Mayor Zoltan Kalo of Csernely, Hungary, says the village of 1,000 will never be able to afford to replace the bells.

Metal thefts are a major problem in Hungary even though parliament has made it harder for scrap metal dealers to accept items they know have been stolen.

Last week thieves broke into a training school for seeing-eye dogs and stole every metal object, including an obstacle course needed to teach the dogs how to lead.

China is building a high-tech police state under a massive surveillance and censorship program: "Golden Shield," linking surveillance cameras, the Internet, phones, facial-recognition software, voice recognition data from phone calls, GPS monitoring, and facial photos into a centralized database for every person in China--1.3 billion faces.

Some 200,000 surveillance cameras have already been installed throughout the city of Shenzhen, with a total of 2 million CCTVs planned, making it the most watched city in the world. It will be connected to a single, nationwide network, an all-seeing eye.

She may be just 2ft high, but Panda the miniature pony is fulfilling a tall order – as a "guide horse" for the blind.

The two-year-old was taught by her trainers to help blind people in the same way as conventional guide dogs.

She stops at kerbs, spots uneven pavements and crosses busy roads. She can get in and out of a car, go up and down stairs and is completely house trained.

And as a guide animal, Panda is allowed to accompany her owner Ann Edie in shopping centres, supermarkets and even on planes.

Mrs Edie, 52, said: "I've had three guide dogs - but none have been anywhere near as good as Panda."

She is one of just two miniature horses in the world to be trained for the job.

Her American trainers at The Guide Horse Foundation in North Carolina, say miniature horses often make better guides than dogs because they are not as easily distracted.

They recommend horses for people who grew up with the animals, are allergic to dogs or who want a companion that will live longer than a dog.

Street View: These Panties have been Removed due to a Privacy Violation

Most web services let you decide what information to publish…not so with Google Maps Street View, which can capture embarrassing or incriminating events with no chance of having the images removed. You’d better hope your butt cheeks don’t get exposed to Google’s all seeing eye.

The phrase “I know where you live” has just gotten a new meaning. It’s now “I know where you live, and I can see every little detail of it from the safety of my home“

The problem is volume. It’s simple: a perfectly good thing can become bad when there’s too much of it.

I bet that in 5 years you’ll have the same thing as Street View, only live.

The house on your right has been blurred on owner’s request. Well, not really, we did that. Should Google be doing it?

They should consider it, though. People’s privacy is not to be taken lightly.

Apparently being able to navigate through city streets and public transportation isn't enough … now seeing eye dogs are being trained to use ATMs for their disabled masters.

Wait a minute, what the hell? Dogs using ATM machines? What if they eat the money? And what about touchscreen ATMs, do those react well to paws? And can a dog really stick a card into the slot using just their mouths? So many questions, so few answers.

They might not be able to help if you forget your Pin, but these dogs can get your money out without paws-ing for thought.

The Pentagon's super snoop "Total Information Awareness" program is back in business, just as we predicted it would be.

Congress attempted to kill the ill-conceived DARPA program in 2003. But instead, the program, designed to somehow find terrorists from documenting everyone's credit card bills, car rental receipts and travel records, went underground and has now returned, bigger and stronger and worse than ever.

The Washington Times is reporting:

The AP had reported this in September 2003, in an article entitled Pentagon office creating surveillance system to close, stating "But they left open the possibility that some or all of the high-powered software tools under development might be used by different government offices to gather foreign intelligence from foreigners, U.S. citizens abroad or foreigners in the United States." So it was not hard to predict the return of the all seeing all knowing surveillance agenda program.

Man Sues Over Nude Beach Dog Ban

JULY 13--A New York man who says that he suffers from a debilitating skin condition and post-traumatic stress disorder caused by the September 11 attacks is suing for the right to have his rat terrier accompany him to a naked beach on Fire Island. Mark DelCore, 39, contends that he needs to sunbathe sans clothes because of an "acute skin condition that requires me to be in the sun as often as possible," according to a federal lawsuit filed yesterday by the Queens man. DelCore's complaint, which does not further identify his ailment, notes that since "my skin condition is all over my body I require exposure to the sun all over my body." The lawsuit, a copy of which you'll find below, contends that while Fire Island National Seashore officials will allow seeing eye dogs to accompany beachgoers, service dogs are not allowed on the beach. DelCore states that he suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and that his dog Cheekies "goes everywhere with me and provides me with emotional support and comfort." He adds that the Fire Island National Seashore is "the only place within range of my home that I am legally allowed to sunbathe without any clothes." In a TSG interview, DelCore said that he was in a lower Manhattan gym on the morning of the World Trade Center attack and, when the planes hit, was forced to leave the facility while still wet. After the first tower collapsed, DelCore said that he was covered with a "light dusting" of an unknown substance (which attached to his wet skin) as he ran north from the scene. His resulting condition, which he said does not have a name, led to him going on disability from his job with a New York bank. DelCore, a former bodybuilder who once competed at the Gay Games, acknowledged that his dog has not been certified as a service animal. (3 pages)
