After working for a vending machine company for more than 20 years, James O’Connor was replaced with someone younger. He sued. He testified that his boss had disparaged older workers, including saying — two weeks before he was fired — “O’Connor, you are too damn old for this kind of work.” A federal court was unmoved, ruling in 1995 that he had not connected the bigoted comments to his firing.

When two older supervisors at a light bulb company were fired and sued, their claim of age discrimination was denied. A federal appeals court ruled in 1994 that the statement by the company’s vice president that “there comes a time when we have to make way for younger people” was “irrelevant.” It was simply a “fact of life,” the court said, with “no disparaging undertones.”

He appeared to be having a grand mal seizure. He was flailing and foaming from the mouth, fists clenched, body tight. I figured the seizure would pass, but in seconds he turned a deep, deep blue. A frightening blue. Someone shouts, ‘Is there a doctor?’ ”

The machine said “charging,” then delivered the shock. The body arched and fell. Still no pulse. Two more minutes of CPR, a second shock. Nothing. “I’m thinking, ‘No way he’s coming back,’ ” Dr. Tolani recalled.

With the lifting of the decree of excommunication, the doctrinal discussions will be taking place between Rome and the Fraternity of St. Pius X. What is the goal of these discussions?
The goal that we wish to achieve with these doctrinal discussions is an important clarification in the teaching of the Church in recent years. Indeed, the Fraternity Saint Pius X, in union with its founder, Archbishop Lefebvre, had serious objections to the Second Vatican Council and we hope that the discussions will help to dispel the errors or the severe ambiguities that have since been spread with full hands throughout the Catholic Church, as John Paul II himself recognized.

We must be realistic. The return, the restoration of the church will take time. The crisis in the Church has affected all aspects of Christian life. To come out of this situation will take more than a generation of constant effort in the right direction – perhaps a century.

The first Galilean Night (Thursday, Oct. 22) was a total success at the planetarium in Buenos Aires. Five hundred people gathered here to look at the Moon and Jupiter with our two biggest scopes (11- and 12-inch SCTs, and to learn something about Galileo´s life and contributions to the modern astronomy. Half of them had never seen the sky with a big telescope, including more than 100 children, who observed the Moon and Jupiter shouting "Wow," "Wonderful," "Incredible"!

On Friday it was cloudy. But our second Galilean Night, on Saturday, was even better, with 700 visitors.

For us these Galilean Nights are very, very special, because our planetarium´s name is... Galileo Galilei!

David Bolinsky and his team at XVIVO designed this animation for a research company called Zirus (and we thank Zirus for letting us play with their pictures). Bolinsky says what you see in the video actually happens much, much faster in real life — in a fraction of a fraction of a second. So this is a very slow motion version of cellular activity.

And for those of you who were wondering, yes, the designers did add color. Proteins, DNA, organelles, and the teeny things inside a human cell are so small, and the insides of cells are so dark, that for all practical purposes, they are colorless.
