One of the credited writers of the song Barracuda, Michael DeRosier, just called in to a local (Seattle) radio talk show and basically said Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart should get a life and he thought it was pretty cool that the song was being played at the RNC.

The podcast of the show will eventually be here. They usually post it around 4 p.m. Pacific. The call is at the very end of the 1st hour.

“There was a time when the only definition (of news) is whatever you read or see on TV or in the newspaper,” Mike Fancher, editor-at-large for The Seattle Times, said at a community forum held Tuesday at The News Tribune. That was when TV and newspapers were the news gatekeepers.

“Print (journalism) is like a term paper,” Brewster said at the forum. “A reporter does his research and presents conclusions.

“But online journalism is much more like a conversation: ‘I’ve found out some things and here they are. What do you think?’ Or: ‘What can you add?’”

He said that truth-seeking in online journalism is more conversational and collaborative. And because the exchange of information is public, in the thread of comments that follows the original report, it can “breed greater confidence in the open-mindedness of the journalism.”

HILLSBORO -- Washington County sheriff's deputies were surprised Saturday evening, when a woman brought in a box of 32 high-explosive bombs used to scare seals from fishing grounds and piers.

No one was injured in the incident.

Leanne Wade, 56, of Hillsboro told deputies she confiscated the seal bombs from her friend's 21-year-old son in Seattle earlier Saturday, then drove them to Hillsboro to turn them in for destruction. She placed the seal bombs on a counter in the after-hours lobby of the sheriff's records department around 6:50 p.m.

Deputies soon called in Portland's bomb squad to safely dispose of the explosives.

They then interviewed Wade and determined that no harm was intended. No criminal charges are expected, said Sgt. Bob Ray, sheriff's spokesman.

They are classified as high explosives under federal law. To legally detonate one, a permit is required from the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms.

Scientists call it "The Great Dying." Life took millions of years to recover.

Scientific sleuths, however, now think they're making progress toward pinning down what caused the extinction of most plants and animals on Earth some 251 million years ago.

The perpetrator wasn't an asteroid or comet, like the impact that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago and inspired movies such as Deep Impact and Armageddon.

Instead, it was a cascade of events that began with a monstrous outpouring of hot, reeking lava in Siberia. Repeated floods of lava released massive amounts of carbon dioxide, which produced a runaway greenhouse effect, oxygen-starved oceans and a poisoned atmosphere.

Crows and their relatives — among them ravens, magpies and jays — are renowned for their intelligence and for their ability to flourish in human-dominated landscapes. That ability may have to do with cross-species social skills. In the Seattle area, where rapid suburban growth has attracted a thriving crow population, researchers have found that the birds can recognize individual human faces.

John M. Marzluff, a wildlife biologist at the University of Washington, has studied crows and ravens for more than 20 years and has long wondered if the birds could identify individual researchers. Previously trapped birds seemed more wary of particular scientists, and often were harder to catch. “I thought, ‘Well, it’s an annoyance, but it’s not really hampering our work,’ ” Dr. Marzluff said. “But then I thought we should test it directly.”

Former lab chimps find new life beyond cages

On 26 isolated acres on the outskirts of this small town some 80 miles east of Seattle, Keith La Chappelle spent $200,000 of his own money, with an additional $80,000 in donations, and built a large chimp house.

And it's all because in May 2002, La Chappelle read an article in Discover magazine about the plight of lab chimps.

In June, seven adult chimps who had spent 25 to 35 years in labs — and like many lab chimps, became surplus research material — ended up here, in Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.
