Archival scrapbooking requires careful attention to using materials that will last a lifetime or longer. Archiving is about making sure that no harm comes to precious photos by understanding some photo-archival facts.

Acid-free does not always mean the product is photo or archival-safe when it comes to archival scrapbooking.

The Photographic Activity Test (PAT), developed by the company, Image Permanence Institute, and performed by several manufacturers, predicts or shows possible interactions between photographic images and the enclosures in which they are stored. If a scrapbook product passes the PAT, it only means the material is safe to use with photographs, but not necessarily safe for archival scrapbooking. It is a good idea to make sure the product has also been pH tested.

Autumn brings fall foliage of reds, oranges and yellows and often a cooler evening. Prominent holidays include Halloween and Thanksgiving. Scrapbooking and other crafts are a great way to celebrate this fall season.

The fall season is about celebrating the abundance you have already, and opening yourself up to possibilities of the future. As I write this and think about the blessings that are already a part of me, I also know other possibilities of my own future are already beckoning at my door.

Looking beyond the immediate holidays to the whole season allows you to reflect what you discover all the more in your scrapbook pages.

Wire, as is known, generally, is for making jewelry pieces. Many ways exist in which it adds an interesting and eye-catching look as a scrapbooking embellishment.

One can buy this craft embellishment in most craft stores such as Michaels and Joann’s, as well as shops solely geared to scrapbooking. You might even be able to find it in a regular hardware store or in the hardware section of your nearest market.

For scrapbooking, 22, 24, or 26-gauge is the best option.

One of the easiest ways to use this embellishment with scrapbooking is to string beads onto your pages.

Craft wire is very easy to shape into whatever design you like. When you’re finished, use a small drop of liquid adhesive to attach the embellishment to your page.

Writing with pieces of wirework is a fun way to add a unique title treatment to your layout.

Archival Scrapbooking is important because we want to be able to have our memories and important events there to look back on in our future. The way to do that is to make sure we take all steps we know of to protect what we have today so we still have it tomorrow.

Some methods, among others, that will be addressed is the use of spray adhesives for newspaper clippings, the use of equipment such as scanners and archival paper as well as what some geneologists know as a homemade solution to do the same thing as many store purchased spray adhesives.

It is because our memories and our painstaking work is important that archiving is an important step in the process.

Many choices in albums for scrapbooking are available.

When thinking on what albums for scrapbooking might appeal for yourself or for others, imagination is the limit. Six basic types of albums are called half-pint, mini, post-bound, spiral-bound, strap-hinge and three-ring.

A half-pint album, often found as a three-ring binder format, may hold about an 8.5" x 5.5" page. A mini is a small album that can either be given as a gift or made part of a larger project. You can get it pre-made in the stores or make it yourself using cardstock, tags, chipboard and various other elements.

Half-pints and mini's are popular albums for scrapbooking because they are smaller than the average scrapbook. Such a project only takes an evening to complete, which is particularly important in the time-conscious society we have today.

Buttons are found on clothing; they can be the eyes of a child’s stuffed animal as well as a cute border on the scrapbooking page.

Growing up, buttons were a common item in the house because of sewing being one of mom’s favorite pastimes. A miniature doll dressed in purple sits on one of my shelves, her arms and legs made of these notions.

Colors and types can be found in craft stores like Joanns or Michael’s or any other specialty scrapbook store in your area. Use them to coordinate with whatever theme you would choose. Create a star for Independence Day or Christmas or make a wave with a bunch in blue for the time you spent on the beach.

Sometimes these embellishments have shanks instead of holes. For these, snip them off with wire cutters, then attach to the layout with adhesive dots.
