Dolly team on verge of new treatments

SCIENTISTS behind Dolly the sheep may develop better treatments for schizophrenia and motor neurone disease within 20 years, it has been reported.

Work has started in Edinburgh using stem cells from human skin, donated by patients at the Western General Hospital.

The experts who cloned the sheep believe they could have a breakthrough within years to help people suffering from diseases of the nervous system.

Speaking at the Scottish Stem Cell Network conference yesterday, Sir Ian Wilmut, behind the project, reportedly said: "There's the possibility that in ten or 20 years there will be much more effective treatments for these diseases because of these skin cells."

The team of scientists – led by Edinburgh University's David Porteous – is working with induced pluripotent stem cells, which can turn into any cell in the human body.

Church chiefs were left outraged last night after stripped-down starlets were spotted cavorting around the ruins of historic St Peter’s College.

St Peter’s was built in 1958 as a teaching college for trainee priests.

But it was left to fall into ruin after closing 28 years ago.

Scottish minister backs fight against rural homophobia

The Minister for Communities and Sport in Scotland has said the country's SNP government is committed to fighting prejudice and discrimination against LGBT people.

Stewart Maxwell MSP made his comments on a visit to Dumfries LGBT Centre last month.

Dumfries and Galloway is the only rural region in Scotland that "visibly tackles issues like homophobia and exclusion," say centre staff.

In government the SNP has supported a new homophobic hate crimes bill but it has been delayed.

Scottish studies have revealed that violence against the gay community is reaching a devastating level.

According to one such report, 36 percent of LGBT people have experienced abuse or violence in the last year, compared to 2.5% of the general population.

British schoolgirls vaccinated against cervical cancer

Scottish schoolgirls are to become the first in the UK to be vaccinated against cervical cancer.

Schools in the Lanarkshire, Tayside, Grampian and Western Isles NHS areas are to begin vaccinating 12 and 13-year-old girls from this week.

All girls aged between 12 and 17 should have been offered the vaccine by August next year.

The Cervarix vaccine works by targeting HPV, the virus which causes cervical cancer. Its manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, said it should prevent 70% of cases - saving about 70 lives a year in Scotland.

Over the coming months, all girls in classes S1 to S6 will be offered the vaccine, so that every secondary schoolgirl under the age of 18 will have had it by the 2009 deadline.

This is a really exciting step to have discovered the cause of a cancer, to have identified what causes it and then to find a vaccine to eradicate it

A designer has created a tartan for Japan which draws inspiration from the country's fascination with cherry blossom and a Scottish industrialist.

David McGill, from Edinburgh, has previously designed tartans for Poland, France and Norway.

His latest design has still to be woven, but on paper includes the colours pink, white, green and brown.

While researching the design, he looked into the story of Fraserburgh-born Thomas Glover, the "Scottish Samurai".

The new tartan has also had input from Shizue Melvin, from Japan, who is married to a Scottish businessman.

The design is called sakura, Japanese for cherry blossom.

Mr McGill, a former chartered architect and champion bowler, runs International Tartan.

At bowls, he was the British Isles Singles Champion in 1977, represented his country in the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, Canada, in 1978 and won silver and bronze medals in the 1980 World Bowls Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

A mechanic got the shock of his life when he discovered a snake while cleaning out a car.

The worker at West Bank Road Garage, Macmerry, East Lothian came across the orange snake while cleaning out an impounded vehicle.

The man initially thought it was a toy but soon realised it was real, reports the BBC.

The Scottish SPCA were called in to remove the rat snake which is not poisonous.

David Legge, from the Vehicle Recovery Scheme, said: "Our contractors often contact me for advice on valuable or unusual property found in uplifted vehicles, but this takes the biscuit.

"Sometimes we can find knives or baseball bats hidden in vehicles, but the snake is something no-one would want to find, let alone handle."
