Catching Crooks With Salt

Salty sweat may leave trace fingerprints on metal

A new crime-fighting technique could make avoiding capture more difficult for even the most fiendish gunsels.

The technique, developed by British scientists, allows police to lift fingerprints from bullet casings, even if the casing has been wiped clean. The typical method for recovering fingerprints relies on the sweat from fingertips left on the casing by the criminal. If the casing is wiped clean, then recovering a fingerprint from sweat becomes next to impossible. However, the new technique relies on a substance in sweat that doesn't wipe away so easily: salt.

salt corrodes certain metals from which bullets are made. In the new technique, the bullet casings are covered with a fine dust.

Unfortunately, some people simply do not have enough salt in their sweat to create enough corrosion. But the technique does show promise.

British and U.S. authorities have used the new method to re-open three cold cases.

TRAVELLING without a GPS has become unthinkable for many drivers, including the criminal fraternity, it would seem. Police are now finding the devices a valuable aid to implicating their owners in crimes, because forensics experts can extract information about a suspect's whereabouts from them.

Scotland Yard analysis of the devices has helped solve dozens of investigations into kidnappings, grooming of children, murder and terrorism. Information about a suspect's whereabouts at particular times, their journeys and addresses of associates can all be discovered - if they have been using a GPS. The devices retain hundreds of records of locations and routes in their memory.

With more than 30 million of them in use in Britain - some in mobile phones - police expect the data to become an increasingly important forensic tool. But the use alarms privacy campaigners, who fear the data could also be used to trap people who commit minor crimes such as speeding.

Scotland Yard said that Met's Specialist Crime Directorate raided seven properties in total on Monday 2 June as part of Operation Rize - three safe depositories, an office and three residential addresses.

Let your state and local authorities know that not only do they trample the 4th amendment (treating all citizens like criminal suspects, without probable cause), but they do not deter crime or even catch many criminals.

The "security merchandisers" are busy reaping profits from the trampling of your liberties by seducing authorities with the latest toys and technology.

CCTV boom has failed to slash crime, say police

Massive investment in CCTV cameras to prevent crime in the UK has failed to have a significant impact, despite billions of pounds spent on the new technology, a senior police officer piloting a new database has warned. Only 3% of street robberies in London were solved using CCTV images, despite the fact that Britain has more security cameras than any other country in Europe.

The warning comes from the head of the Visual Images, Identifications and Detections Office (Viido) at New Scotland Yard as the force launches a series of initiatives to try to boost conviction rates using CCTV evidence.

LONDON (Reuters) - Supermodel Naomi Campbell was released on bail pending investigation into a disturbance on a plane at Heathrow's new Terminal 5, police sources said on Friday.

The 37-year-old model was escorted off a U.S.-bound flight on Thursday after police were called. She was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, and later released to return on bail in late May.

"She was released on bail shortly after midnight, and is due to return on bail," Scotland Yard said in a statement.

Campbell was on a British Airways flight due to depart for Los Angeles when the disturbance occurred.

Her spokeswoman said that one of two bags she had checked in had gone missing.

Primary school children should be eligible for the DNA database if they exhibit behaviour indicating they may become criminals in later life, according to Britain's most senior police forensics expert.

Gary Pugh, director of forensic sciences at Scotland Yard and the new DNA spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo), said a debate was needed on how far Britain should go in identifying potential offenders, given that some experts believe it is possible to identify future offending traits in children as young as five.

'You could argue the younger the better. Criminologists say some people will grow out of crime; others won't. We have to find who are possibly going to be the biggest threat to society.'

MI5 traces al-Qaeda 'sleeper cell' to British police

*** Junior MI5 agents risked careers by speaking to a newspaper when they discovered that members of an al-Qaeda cell they were trying to trace turned out to be working for the Metropolitan Police. The officers, who were identified as contacts for al-Qaeda, are believed to be involved with the highly secretive and mysterious "Special Branch" which has special powers, is not subject to public scrutiny, and has links to senior officials within the security services including MI5. The police service has refused to discuss the matter and claims that the officers in question are "under surveillance". But this reassurance is hollow and questionable when the whistle-blowers are the very MI5 agents supposedly doing the surveillance. ***

According to the News of the World, in the past few weeks MI5 agents have identified four officers suspected of passing secrets from the force.

The British officers faced serious difficulties. They were not able to examine the body of Mrs Bhutto and vital evidence had been destroyed at the crime scene when it was hosed down after the attack.

It is understood that the officers reached some preliminary conclusions from studying the car and conducting analysis of video footage and other material.

Its detectives have not inquired into who carried out the attack nor why it was mounted.

Stuff like this, is how conspiracy theories are born.

Bhutto died from bomb blast not gunshot, Scotland Yard says

Benazir Bhutto died from banging her head after a bomb blast, not a gunshot wound, a Scotland Yard team concluded today

The controversial finding threatens to inflame the pre-election political atmosphere in Pakistan today, as it backs the government version of events

“In my opinion Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto died as a result of a severe head injury sustained as a consequence of the bomb-blast and due to head impact somewhere in the escape hatch of the vehicle,” Dr Nathaniel Cary, a British Home Office pathologist said in the report.

“In essence, all the evidence indicates that one suspect has fired the shots before detonating an improvised explosive device,” it added.

The report noted that despite the lack of a detailed search of the crime scene or post mortem on Ms Bhutto’s body, “the evidence that is available is sufficient for reliable conclusions to be drawn”.

Almost two dozen people were arrested on Thursday after police swooped on a Romanian child slave gang operating in Britain.

Six children aged under 10 were rescued in the pre-dawn raids and taken into care, after they had been forced to steal and beg on London streets and on public transport, Scotland Yard said in a statement.

While many of these crimes committed appear to be low level, we have evidence that organised crime networks are exploiting and driving the most vulnerable members of their own community," he said in a statement.

"With promises of a financial return, some poor families surrender their children who are subsequently forced to commit crime.

"Today's operation is about us targeting those behind organised crime networks on the streets of London, and the criminal exploitation of children."

All arrested were Romanian.
