The mad scientist bromide has long been a staple of scifi. From Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to Joss Whedon's Dr. Horrible, it is one of the most popular of the six known scifi plots*. If the frequency with which geniuses lose their sanity in real life were anything close to that suffered in scifi, we would have been blown apart by an evil particle beam weapon many times over.

There have been many hypotheses thrown out over the years to explain our fascination with mad scientists. Most focus on the fact that people are afraid of what they don't understand: science is a deep and inaccessable mystery made up of latin words and inscruitable jargon. Science is a powerful tool, and people fear that one crazy person might have too much power over that tool.

is understandable then, that, with the suicide of the govenrment's main suspect in the anthrax killings, people are breathing a sigh of relief. They have been conditioned by TV, movies and literature to accept that scientists suddenly snap

Our robot overlords

Personally, I have no need to welcome our new robot overlords. I’ve seen way too many scifi movies to feel comfortable around anthropomorphic metallic beasties, which is why this video freaks me the heck out. It may not be humanish, but it’s definitely quadrupedal and incredibly life-like in its reaction to such things as a broad kick, a hill, and a slippery surface.

And that buzzing noise! If they want to terrorize a small town, they should paste fly wings on it and let it loose. Pitchforks and torches would follow quickly.

Still and all, wow. The progress that’s been made in such things is amazing.

I have just finished watching the trailers to this movie. The trailers are truly spell bounding. If the movie is 50% as good as the trailers, this film will be well worth the wait to watch.

Harry Bates was the author who wrote the short story that resulted with the original "The Day the Earth Stood Still" movie being made.

Recommended Reading List from Hypatia's Hoard for "Ladies & Gentlebeings" Panel at WisCon 27, by Elizabeth Barrette.

Bradley, Marion Zimmer. The Darkover series repeatedly mentions the existence of emmasca (neuters, who may be born neuter or made that way) and of chieri (an alien but humanoid race of shifting sex and gender). The Fall of Neskaya (DAW, 2001) features a fairly prominent emmasca character, the Keeper Kieran, human but with some chieri ancestry.

Butler, Octavia. The omnibus Lilith's Brood (Warner Aspect, 1989) introduces the Oankali, who have three sexes: male, female, and ooloi. The ooloi enable the others to reproduce by blending components of their genetic makeup. And they proceed to do the same thing with humans, which definitely challenges human gender-identity and arguably alters the biological sex roles as well.

The Sovereign's length is given by Picard in "First Contact" as "almost 700 metres". The Encyclopedia lists it as 680 metres on the illustration of the various Enterprises (3rd edition, page 138). This is the figure I have gone with for the Sovereign for the purposes of this website. Assuming this length is correct, the following table gives some figures for various components of the ship :

If you're looking for some seriously mind-blowing hard science fiction online this afternoon, look no further than a new (free online) short story, "Engineers' Dreams," by science historian George Dyson.

George is known for his meticulous, entertaining historical investigations into secret government science projects of the twentieth century. Now he's turned his eyes to the twenty-first century, and has written a highly-informed and brainy tale of how Google could become the first true artificial intelligence

I've heard many webbish futurists speculate that A.I. is going to come from search algorithms and user-generated content, but this is the first time I've ever seen anybody explain it in a plausible way. Excellent read.

Asimov's 30 Laws of Robotics Par 1 (#4-11)

clipper's remarks: If you know Asimov's first Three Laws of Robotics then you either are a scifi fan or a Will Smith Super-Fan (it was a better than average movie and for Will a better than average Will Smith movie which says a lot as I am NOT a Will Smith Super-Fan, He just makes smart movies.) But if you are in the dark about the first 3 laws of robotics here they are:

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.

2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.

3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

Science Fiction Reference Work

The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction was edited by John Clute and Peter Nicholls. It costs 45 UK pounds in hardback and is published by Orbit.

The Blue Book, as I shall call it, doesn't really need a review. It needs statistics. It has 1370 pages, 1.2 million words, and 4300 entries.

And that is all I can say about it. It has everything I never needed to know. The nationality of the last author in the book is Polish (not Hungarian as I thought). If the Blue Book has any faults it is that it takes itself too seriously.

I would like to have seen more cross referencing of science fiction terms. There is the obligatory entry on time travel, hyper space, and so on, but less well-know terms such as "Slans" were by passed. Comics and fantasy novelists are also left out.
