In France, Scientology was found guilty of defrauding followers after a judge effectively debunked the idea of the church's trusty E-meter, a crude polygraph used to encourage Scientologists to purchase everything from books to extreme sauna courses.

In Los Angeles, the Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis cut his ties with Scientology in protest at what he branded their tolerance of homophobia, adding that the church's claim it does not tell people to ''disconnect'' from unsupportive family members was untrue - his wife had been ordered to do so. Meanwhile, Scientology's chief spokesman, Tommy Davis, stormed out of a TV interview with Martin Bashir, after being pressed on ''certain articles of faith''. The alien stuff, basically.

Oprah then thanked him for clearing all that up, and moved on to her next guest, Suzanne Somers and her new book, "How I Kicked Cancer's Ass with the Power of the ThighMaster".

Tom defends Scientology

"That's Lord Xenu, not 'zenu', you pre-cleared dolt!"

Clearwater, Florida - Tired of crazy allegations that they believe in a Galactic Warlord named Zenu, Tom went on Oprah Winfrey's show to set the record straight.

"No", said Tom, "We do not believe in Zenu. His name is Xenu, and he is an intergalactic warlord, not merely galactic."

Tom also dispelled myths about the practice of "disconnection". He pointed out that the church does not punish or sanction you for spending time with family members who are not members in good standing. They simply offer a system of rewards to those that voluntarily choose to shun everyone they used to know.

"Food can be a great reward", remarked Tom. "Also, having anything at all to do with the church is it's own reward."

But what of the fact that the Church was actually the creation of a science fiction writer who lied about his background and achievements, and has since died?

Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis quit the Church of Scientology in protest this week over what he calls the organization’s “gay-bashing.” Haggis decided to leave Scientology partially due to statements made by the church’s San Diego branch in support of the California Proposition 8 gay marriage ban.

clipper's remarks: This is a common argument presented by the two trolls willhelm and darkeforce. In their world up is down, down is up, and after smearing poop on their own face they point at other people and call them shitheads.

It's a world of redefining terms to suit their needs, cherry picking the foundation of their religion (the bible) to shore up their beliefs, and a pathological need to project their own requirements of blind faith on other people.

It's the only way they can level the playing field when they know what irrational nuts they sound like when trying to defend their claims. Their only recourse - an ad hominem false equivalency approach in order to appear equal.

Christopher Hitchens has been debating a Christian pastor named Douglas Wilson on the subject of whether Christianity has been a force for good in the world.

I just want to comment on one point Wilson throws out.

"It's not a question of whether we have faith, it's what we have faith in," says Wilson. "Christopher has faith in the role of scientific inquiry, rational inquiry. He has faith in that process. Christopher is as much a man of faith as I am."

I so detest that line of argument, that attempt at setting up a false equivalence, reducing all words to equal lies. If the only way you can support your beliefs is by claiming that all ideas, from Scientology and Young Earth Creationism to Ohm's Law and the theory of evolution, are equally matters of faith, then your only line of defense is to endorse ignorance and the pretense that everything we know is stupid. It is contemptible.
