I am so impressed with the teachers at my school this year. Nearly 75% have set up a blog as a way to communicate with their parents and as a way to interact with their students. We had some teacher bloggers last year, but very few parents actually tuned in to what people were writing about. Teachers were writing without a larger audience. This year, I have set the goal to get every parent set up with a Netvibes page so that they can access all of their child’s teacher’s blogs quickly. I’m attending the first PTSA meeting of the year this week to teach parents how to set up the page, I’ve written an article about Netvibes for our school-wide ParentTalk and I’ve created a screencast for parents to set the Netvibes page at home. Below is the article - I really hope this works!

We need to recognize that there isn't a single solution, such as creating small schools or charter schools. We need to rely on good data and good judgment about what works. And we need to have the patience to support sustained efforts.

We know that early childhood education sets the stage for school success, especially for children living in poverty.

We must invest in good practice.

Much is a stake regarding the decisions we make for all our children, and it is nothing less than our democratic way of life. If we decide that we want to invest in education, the results for the country will be great: global competitiveness, scientific discoveries and productive citizens.

We, the people, must acknowledge our responsibility in driving the issues of this election cycle. And then needed presidential leadership will follow.

Legal cases mount up over schoolyard injuries

CHILDREN are suing schools for hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages for injuries caused while playing games such as tiggy.

Nearly 100 lawsuits were filed against the State of Queensland for injuries suffered by schoolchildren in the last financial year.

One child is asking the court to award her $280,000 plus interest after she hurt herself playing tiggy (chase) in the schoolyard when she was six.

Another launched a lawsuit last month claiming more than $136,000 for an injury she says she suffered while high jumping during a Sunshine Coast school carnival.

The revelation that schoolyards are becoming fertile ground for litigation follows public outcry over the banning of cartwheels, handstands and somersaults at a north Queensland school and admissions by Education Minister Rod Welford that fear of legal action was partly behind the decision.

clipper's remarks: When I was in High School, I would refuse to bow my head in prayer: I'm an atheist and refused to pray to any god, especially while at school, during regularly scheduled school hours. Once, some "Christians" a few seats away from me started eying me and telling me to "Bow your f***ing head you Satan worshiper or we'll kick your f****ing ass!"… This is exactly like that, except this time the "Christians" are "Police" and kicking your ass means telling you what and who to pray to or face police harassment by ejection and threats of bodily harm.

From the inbox: Baseball fan Brad Campeau-Laurion says a uniformed police officer (perhaps off-duty but working security for overtime) forcibly ejected him from the stadium last night during the Yankees-Red Sox game.

Why? He says all he did was try to go to the bathroom while "God Bless America" was played during the 7th inning stretch. His letter reads (plus some updates after the jump):

"I attempted to get up to use the restroom, rather urgently, during the 7th inning stretch as God Bless America was beginning. As I attempted to walk down the aisle and exit my section into the tunnel, I was stopped by a police officer. He informed me that I had to wait until the song was over.

The man tells us he's left a message with no response from the Operations Office at Yankee Stadium. He's also contacted Norman Siegel, the ACLU, and filed a complaint with the NYPD Civilian Complaint Review Board.

We're still working on getting a response/denial from Yankee stadium

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Some parents in Orange County were concerned that school busses were dangerously overcrowded.

The pictures were taken by University High School junior Erin Parrot. In the photos, the students were sitting on each other's laps and others were in the aisle.

The school district said that the incident wasn't unusual especially at the start of the school year. Parents were already upset about the switch in the school start times meant to cut back on transportation costs.
