More women use public transport than men

The UK's towns and cities are designed primarily for men, not women, says a study. So what's the difference?

If a town was designed solely for women, how would it look?

If you think it would have more nail bars, shoe shops and coffee shops selling skinny lattes, then think again.

Travel is one example. Studies show women make more complex journeys than men, dropping children off at school, going to work, getting the shopping before going home.

In contrast, men tend to just travel straight to work and back again.

Women tend to worry about their safety at night more and want better lighting in public spaces. Others find pavements difficult for buggies," she said. "They are problems which affect us every day."

But Dr Greed's key battleground is on public toilets. She says many women have said their closure is a big problem.

Often you hear advice that suggests you should compartmentalize and put your problems out of your mind, especially late at night when you want to get some sleep. But for solving business problems, I’ve found the opposite works. I will sit down at my computer for 15 minutes right before going to bed. I’ll look at an email message that outlines a troubling problem or I will just jot down a problem and study it. I say to myself, “I’ll think about this overnight.” Then I go to bed.

You see, your subconscious mind works while you sleep. Thinking about a business problem the last thing at night is how you harness your subconscious to work on that problem.

Sometimes I literally will wake up with the solution — or easily think of several potential solutions the next day.

The problems of childhood obesity are not exclusive to American soil. Both the U.S. and many European countries face this crisis. Various solutions have been proposed and executed. Everything from promoting exercise to teaching children about the origin of their food to banning candy or sweets on school campuses.

Now the European Commission has put forth a new initiative. A recent BMJ article, European Commission plans free fruit and vegetable scheme in schools, highlights the commission’s desire to get kids off to a strong start regarding healthy eating habits. Although various countries have enacted similar plans, the commission’s concern is that these plans have holes in them including:

Stadium ready for opening weekend

Indianapolis - The new home of the Colts will get its first test this weekend when high school teams take the field at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Peyback Classic is the first test of what's expected to be one of the nation's premier sporting and convention facilities. Saturday, four more games kickoff before the Colts make their debut at the stadium on Sunday.

"Everything works," said Bob Grand, chairman of the Capital Improvement Board, the city agency responsible for running the $720 million stadium. "Toilets, concession stands, lights, sound, video. Everything works, everything works."

Hundreds of stadium employees and construction workers spent the week preparing. Friday, businessman Forrest Lucas - who bought naming rights for the stadium - helped move another race car into the stadium. All three nights of games, a team of contractors will be in the stadium, ready to fix surprise problems.

I'm a little in love with the 50s and 60s -- the dresses, the gloves, the men in fedoras. Oh, and let's not forget the belted sanitary pads, segregation and typing pools.

So my adoration of many things vintage is laced with bitterness and crinolins. The reality is that every time period, no matter how styley and quaint, has had its downside for women. I could go on and on about this (or I could just FedEx you a copy of my grad school thesis), but I think it would be much more fun to actually see an example of how a lovely time went completely wrong for women.

'm talking about an advertisement for Lysol that appeals to women's fear of neglecting her marriage, her man and her personal hygiene. The ad promotes douching with Lysol (yes, you read correctly...douching.

"safeguard her dainty feminine allure."

is "non-caustic" and much more effective than (shudder)

(CBS) Children are often better candidates for hypnosis than adults, says one clinical psychologist, and the process can help resolve such problems as pain, anxiety, bed wetting, and asthma.

Robert Shacter of New York's Mount Sinai School of Medicine talked about children and hypnosis on The Saturday Early Show. He says children tend to respond to hypnotic suggestion better than adults because they are more in touch with their imaginations.

The easiest way to hypnotize a child is to have them focus on a point, he explains. They will do that until their eyes begin to feel heavy, and they become sleepy. You now have them in a trance-like state. Once they are in this state, you begin to tell the child stories that can alleviate whatever problems they may have.

Here are some of the problems that might be helped by hypnosis:

1. He was a brawling bellhop. When he worked at the Boston Harbor Hotel in his early 20s, he and other hotel employees used to settle their problems with their fists. "We would argue about tips all the time. So we used to go into the bellman's closet and punch it out until we decided who was right and who was wrong. But we didn't hit in the face."

2. He left South Boston because of the mob. "Whitey Bulger had a bunch of goons working under him and they wanted $2,500," says White. "At the time, that might as well have been $25,000 to me. I didn't have it, so I went back to Vegas." He's now developing a crime drama series with SpikeTV about the Boston mob.

3. He trained Lorenzo Fertitta. The friendship that launched the UFC began when White met Fertitta at a wedding, years after the two had gone to high school together. White began training Fertitta in boxing for fitness, and the two became friendly.

Researchers study diet and autism

Researchers at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston have embarked on one of the first double-blind, clinical studies to determine whether gluten and dairy products play a role in autistic behavior as parents have anecdotally claimed.

The pilot study is one of seven current studies on autism in the Department of Pediatrics and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

"There's a lot of misinformation, so that's why this study is so important," said Fernando Navarro, M.D., assistant professor of pediatrics at the medical school and lead investigator of the study. "Hundreds and hundreds of parents think this works but we need serious evidence."

A lot of children with autism have gastrointestinal problems such as constipation and diarrhea. Whether these problems are related to brain development is open to question,

Hillsong hits schools with beauty gospel

EVERY Tuesday afternoon during the first term at Matraville Sports High School, a group of young women take part in classes intended to boost their self-esteem. Some have personal problems, others have behavioural issues, while a few simply go because their friends do.

For the next two hours they learn a range of skills including how to put on make-up, do their hair and nails, and walk with books balanced on their heads.

The program, called Shine, was created by the Hillsong Church. It is being run in at least 20 NSW public schools, numerous small community organisations and within the juvenile justice system.

"Through skin care, natural make-up, hair care, nail care girls discover their value and created uniqueness," the material says.

Common vaginal infection may increase risk of HIV infection

A common vaginal infection may make women more susceptible to contracting HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Public Health researchers have found.

An analysis of 23 published studies, including data from more than 30,700 women from around the world, showed that women with bacterial vaginosis – the most common type of vaginosis in women of reproductive age – were more likely than others to be infected with HIV. The association between bacterial vaginosis (BV) and HIV was stronger for women without high-risk sexual behavior.

The results of this meta-analysis have been published in the peer-reviewed journal, AIDS.

Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance in the type of bacteria normally found in the vagina. BV has been shown to cause gynecological and obstetrical problems including preterm delivery, pelvic inflammatory disease and upper genital tract infections.
