Microsoft denies it's running call-in 'save XP' petition

Neowin.net said Microsoft is counting calls put to its tech support lines

June 4, 2008 (Computerworld) After a popular technology Web site reported that Microsoft Corp. was logging calls from customers who requested that the company extend the retail availability of Windows XP, some users claimed that they couldn't get through to the support lines.

Today, however, Microsoft denied that it organized any kind of call-in petition and pleaded with users not to dial its technical support numbers to ask for an XP extension.

On Friday, Neowin.net posted a notice titled "Microsoft Taking Official Petitions to Keep XP Alive" that claimed Microsoft has been tallying calls made to the support lines.

Some save-XP petitions are, in fact, circulating on the Web, including one organized by InfoWorld, a Computerworld sister site. According to InfoWorld, more than 200,000 people have "signed" its petition as of Wednesday morning.

A petition to “Save Windows XP” has drawn more than 111,000 supporters — and continued shots across the Microsoft XP vs. Vista bow, a battle that began with Vista’s release last year.

Among the concerns about Vista are the amount of computer memory and space it requires, its seemingly slower speed and frustration over the fact that third-party drivers for some printers and other devices are still not available from the companies that make those devices.

XP also will be available for sale until Jan. 31, 2009, by “system builders,” small businesses that custom-build “white box,” or generic, PCs.

That's some 479,326 hung systems, if you're keeping score at home, and it's in first place by a large margin -- Microsoft clocks in at number two at 17.9 percent, and ATI is fourth with 9.3 percent.

So that's pressure by Intel to support incompatible chipsets, outrage by Dell and Wal-Mart that the Vista Capable program was confusing customers, Microsoft executives saying they had been "personally burnt" by Vista, and now what looks like a huge NVIDIA driver problem -- who knows what else is going to come out of this lawsuit? At this point we're half expecting a photo of Gates signing a Save XP petition.

Microsoft responds to "Save XP" petition

A spokesperson noted that Microsoft had already delayed XP's demise by six months from its original Dec. 31, 2007, end-of-sales date, as software vendors, customers, and others complained that the deadline was too soon, coming less than a year after Windows Vista's release. "That's what informed our decision to extend the availability of XP initially and what will continue to guide us," another spokesperson told Computerworld Australia.

The first spokesperson expressed some surprise at the resistance some users have expressed to adopting Vista, recalling that many users were upset that Vista's original release had been delayed. She also noted that Microsoft has several options for people to install XP on new systems after June 30 and that the company planned on supporting XP for some time after it is no longer available for sale.

clipper's remarks: I found out about this on Arbed's Vox. You can go to this site and sign a petition to hopefully keep XP around. For those of you who are avoiding Vista like the plague, this is worth signing up.

Warning - It's REALLY, REALLY slow (not XP, the site) - so be prepared to let it load slowly, or maybe try again during off hours, but I think it is worth the time to try and fill it out.
