State should probe maulings

How many maulings must occur like those the past few days before the state takes action and forces accountability for wild-animal parks in Missouri?

Either a tiger mauled a 16-year-old worker at the Branson Interactive Zoo and Aquarium, or, the concerned cat tried to pull the unconscious boy out of a pool to save him --unfortunately severely injuring him.

The public needs to know what happened. Trouble is, there seems to be no regulatory agency --federal, state, or local --in charge of investigating such incidents in the way, for example, a roller coaster accident at a theme park would be investigated.

- A kid was badly hurt in a tiger enclosure at Branson Interactive Zoo and Aquarium. A family interviewed by law enforcement say a tiger attacked the boy, who had entered an enclosure to take pictures for them.

The state must act to change that. On many counts, public safety is not being served.

Republicans have seized on Barack Obama's call for drivers to inflate their tires as a laughable response to the energy crisis. But at least three prominent John McCain supporters have recently agreed with the Democrat on tire efficiency.

Nestled within the "Vehicle and Fuel Choices for American Security Act of 2005," which Lieberman introduced in the Senate, section 201 requires the creation of a "national tire fuel efficiency program for tires designed for the use on passenger cars and light trucks."

Lieberman is not the only McCain supporter who feels that tires are a useful point of leverage in the battle for energy security. As the LA Times reported in June, both California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Florida Governor Charlie Crist have encouraged drivers to keep tires inflated -- even as they disagreed about the value of offshore drilling. Indeed, tire maintenance would appear to be the one energy cause that almost everyone can get behind -- save for McCain's campaign.

House Could Vote on Paycheck Fairness Act THIS Wednesday!

Women on average continue to be paid only 77 cents to the dollar paid to their male counterparts. With a record 69 million women in the workforce, wage discrimination hurts almost all of our nation's families and disadvantages women in nearly every occupational categories. In addition, wage discrimination lowers total lifetime earnings, reducing women's benefits from Social Security and pension plans and inhibiting their ability to save not only for retirement but for other lifetime goals such as buying a home and paying for a college education.

A vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act is a critical step forward in our goal to close the persistent and sizable wage gap between men and women working full-time year round, even those in the same or similar jobs.

1. The greenhouse signature is missing. We have been looking and measuring for years, and cannot find it.

The signature of an increased greenhouse effect is a hot spot about 10km up in the atmosphere over the tropics. We have been measuring the atmosphere for decades using radiosondes: weather balloons with thermometers that radio back the temperature as the balloon ascends through the atmosphere. They show no hot spot. Whatsoever.

If there is no hot spot then an increased greenhouse effect is not the cause of global warming. So we know for sure that carbon emissions are not a significant cause of the global warming. If we had found the greenhouse signature then I would be an alarmist again.

When the signature was found to be missing in 2007 (after the latest IPCC report),

When I started that job in 1999 the evidence that carbon emissions caused global warming seemed pretty good: CO2 is a greenhouse gas, the old ice core data, no other suspects.

The evidence was not conclusive, but why wait until we were certain when it appeared we needed to act quickly? Soon government and the scientific community were working together and lots of science research jobs were created. We scientists had political support, the ear of government, big budgets, and we felt fairly important and useful (well, I did anyway). It was great. We were working to save the planet.

But since 1999 new evidence has seriously weakened the case that carbon emissions are the main cause of global warming, and by 2007 the evidence was pretty conclusive that carbon played only a minor role and was not the main cause of the recent global warming. As Lord Keynes famously said, "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?"

July 18, 2008 -- Scientists are searching within the virtual world and finding real viruses.

Every hour, HealthMap, an infectious disease-tracking Web site, culls through news Web sites, public health list servs, the World Health Organization's online pages, and other Web sites in six different languages to pinpoint outbreaks of disease that real-world doctors can then act on.

"We were originally thinking about how we could expand disease surveillance and pick up outbreaks earlier than traditional methods," said John Brownstein of Harvard Medical School and Children's Hospital Boston, who created HealthMap in September of 2006 with Clark Friefeld, a software developer at Harvard Medical School.

So far the program identifies about 95 percent of all disease outbreaks, sometimes days before the World Health Organization or the Centers of Disease Control announce them.

It is sad to see that so much of what he offered up during the primaries has been tossed aside and he has "CHANGEd" his positions on, or rather, he has become more forthright with his positions on matters since the nomination was given to him. For me, that was why he never got my attention or vote to begin with, it was never very clear what his positions were from the start, I would always ask, "what are his values", "what is his position on such and such" and the answer was most often a rhetorical, "well, he is going to "change" things!" So now, what can people do? McCain is the same, 3rd parties rarely triumph, staying home doesn't really do much of anything except save the gas you might use to drive to the polls. Myself?
