There was a time in the indie film business when specialty houses from the major studios stalked the earth, reaching into deep pockets to acquire the rights to distribute the buzziest films at the coolest festivals -- notably Sundance.

Lately, however, the indie situation is so dire that industry savant Mark Gill bemoaned its fate in a keynote address at the current Los Angeles Film Festival. His talk has been linked to across a wide spectrum of blogs, less for its hopeful closing notes than for its array of forlorn statistics about tanking indies.

Infighting hits US actors strike

A breakaway group within the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) has launched a campaign to gain control of the powerful Hollywood union.

It blames the organisation's current leaders for the stalemate in contract talks with major American studios.

The group - calling itself Unite for Strength - hopes to gain a majority on the national governing board in elections in September.

It has unveiled 31 candidates, including Chicago Hope star Adam Arkin.

Other contenders include two actors from Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice - Kate Walsh and Amy Brenneman - as well as Doug Savant from Desperate Housewives.

'Concern for future'

They have accused the current leadership of mishandling talks and straining relations with SAG's smaller sister union, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA).

The challenge to SAG's ruling coalition - a Hollywood-based group known as Membership First - means the stand-off is likely to drag on for another two months.

A Daily Galaxy post last year, The Importance of Being Forgetful, featured the built-in neural process of forgetting, which discussed why the average human brain is equipped with the ability to filter through seemingly irrelevant details. While the average person may not have vast memory resources, it appears to be an evolutionary trade-off that allows the majority of us to focus on the most relevant facts.

However, some of the most incredible minds on Earth lack this ability to filter irrelevant facts, or perhaps it is more accurate to say that to a savant, the irrelevant IS relevant, and incredibly so. Somehow their brains are able to store and access incredible loads of information, even perceiving and relating to this information in an entirely different way.

Animals can think like autistic savants, which might explain some of their more puzzling behaviour, a US researcher says.

But an international team of researchers say this intriguing idea is unlikely and is undermined by available scientific evidence.

Australian animal behaviour expert, Professor Lesley Rogers from the University of New England in Armidale, and colleagues take on the savant hypothesis in the current issue of the journal PloS Biology.

People with autism tend to focus on detail at the expense of other abilities.

Autistic savants have an extreme case of this and often have exceptional skills in music, maths or art but often have poor social skills.

Then there are birds that have a savant-like memory for remembering accurately where they stashed thousands of different seeds to get them through winter.

Grandin thinks such birds have this highly developed skill at the cost of other cognitive abilities, just like human autistic savants.

Mice lacking a certain brain protein learn some tasks better but also forget faster, according to new research from MIT that may explain the phenomenon of autistic savants in humans. The work could also result in future treatments for autism and other brain development disorders

mice genetically engineered to lack a key protein used for building synapses--the junctions through which brain cells communicate--actually learned a spatial memory task faster and better than normal mice

But when tested weeks later, they couldn't remember what they had learned as well as normal mice, and they had trouble remembering contexts that should have provoked fear

The mice in the study had smaller dendritic spines and weaker brain synapses. Their enhanced spatial learning is similar to that of mice engineered to have a mutation in another protein--neuroligin3--that binds directly to Shank1 and is also associated with autism
