Russia's Gazprom Says it Will Halt Gas Supply to Ukraine

Gazprom insists it has a valid transit agreement with Ukraine until the end of 2010. "Such a formulation is absolutely incorrect from both an economic and legal point of view," Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said of Naftogaz's letter in comments broadcast on state TV. Ukraine would face "serious consequences" if it interfered with transit flows, he added. Gazprom said Naftogaz had been trying to hike the amount Russia pays it to transit gas through Ukraine.

Gazprom said Ukraine owed it more than $2bn in unpaid bills for 2008, a figure that includes fines for late payment. It said a Russian-Ukrainian intermediary company has received $1.5bn from Ukraine but said the money had not yet reached its own accounts or been paid in full.

MOSCOW -- Russia said it would stop supplying Ukraine with gas on Jan. 1 after weeks of negotiations over a new supply contract for 2009 ended in failure.

The Chief Executive of Russian energy giant OAO Gazprom Alexei Miller told reporters late on Wednesday that Ukraine had rejected a Russian proposal to increase 2009 prices to $250 per 1,000 cubic meters from $179.50 at present.

Further developments will be closely watched in Europe. A similar dispute led to supply disruptions there in 2006, something all parties say they want to avoid this time. Then, the move caused panic, with many European politicians saying they feared an emboldened Russia was using its energy clout to intimidate its neighbors. Moscow has had a difficult relationship with Kiev since 2004 when pro-Western forces took the political initiative, setting the country on an often chaotic course that has irritated the Kremlin.

Georgian Villagers Recount Tales Of Marauders

Displaced persons told stories of how they hid in basements while Ossetian and Chechen irregulars rampaged through their villages. They recounted tales of neighbors being shot and of homes being torched. Events happened so fast that many, especially the elderly, didn’t have enough time to escape.

"They poured gasoline on houses and lit them on fire everyday," says 84 year-old Alexi Datashvili, one of about two dozen elderly and feeble residents from the Georgian villages [...]

In Gori itself, Russian officials have impeded Georgian television broadcasts, replacing them with Russian programming.

The recently modernized Georgian army base in Gori has been thoroughly ransacked. Several hundred meters north of the base, Russian forces are digging new artillery positions – an indicator that Russian troops are not intending to pull out soon.

The Georgian village of Karateli lies seven kilometers north of Gori. While many buildings in the village are still standing, a large number of homes along the road have been destroyed and every store looted. Village residents recall being terrified as marauding bands swept into the village.

A woman named Marina, who requested that her family name not be used, said she was one of eight people who hid in a garage as the looting occurred. "Ossetians attacked us, they stole all our cars – didn’t leave a single one," she states. Indeed, the only vehicles to be seen in the town were all burned-out wrecks. Marina said that while she was in hiding, her house was pillaged and a storeroom burned.

Locals claim only a few Georgians were killed, although another village resident, Medea Bibilashvili, claimed that "some" young men were rounded up and taken away. The account could not be independently verified.

Video: Georgian TV reporter shot by Russian sniper during live broadcast carries on with her report with bleeding arm

This is the dramatic moment a TV reporter was shot by a sniper as she reported live from war-torn Georgia.

Tamara Urushadze took a bullet to her left arm in the flashpoint town of Gori as Russian forces continued their illegal occupation.

Bravely, or foolishly, the 32-year-old brunette continued her report after a few moments as other journalists and aid workers dashed for cover.

Siege-town Gori has become a deadly 'sniper's alley' with citizens at the mercy of rampaging militiamen - believed to be from the breakaway republic South Ossetia - looting and firing guns, some drunkenly.

On Sunday video footage caught reporters from two Turkish stations ducking and saying their last prayers as they were fired upon by Russian snipers.

One of the journalists was hit in the eye but his injuries are reportedly not thought to be life-threatening.

Emergency in Georgia after unrest

All demonstrations are banned and only state television can broadcast news.

President Mikhail Saakashvili imposed the 15-day emergency after six days of opposition rallies, saying "Russian special services" were behind unrest.

The US later called for calm and for the Georgian government and opposition leaders to negotiate.

The EU foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, urged restraint from both sides, saying "political differences should be resolved within the democratic institutions".

The state of emergency was initially announced in Tbilisi for 48 hours, but that was later extended to the whole country for 15 days.

Imedi TV, which has broadcast statements by opposition leaders, stopped broadcasting on Wednesday, after riot police entered its premises.

How did a show that nearly didn’t get approved for production, that was cancelled once before it was finally shut down and that only lasted three seasons become the most popular TV franchise in history?

TOS featured pioneering roles for an African-American actress and a Japanese-American actor, and included a Russian character at a time when the U.S. was in a constant state of near-war with the U.S.S.R. There was even a bi-racial character on board—although the “races” he represented were Vulcan and human.

“Leave any bigotry in your quarters,” Kirk says in The Balance of Terror. “There’s no room for it on the bridge.”

Did Roddenberry’s vision—equality, addressing social issues—make a difference in the series’ success? It’s hard to separate those subjects from the stories themselves, but if you talk to enough fans, you find them frequently mentioning the evergreen subjects that were tackled.

The “vision” also helped create a new kind of a civilized expeditionary force, with enlightened rules of engagement: use force when necessary, but do not intervene in other cultures — per the Prime Directive — and, whenever you can, resolve things peacefully.

Jeff Greenwald, author of Future Perfect: How STAR TREK Conquered Planet Earth, told tvland.com that TOS’s enduring legend is due, in part, to the fact that it “came at the beginning of an age — the age of information, the age of space flight, the age of technology” — and so helped to define it.

In short, TOS came at the time when the future began. The future is now here, with cell phones that look suspiciously like Kirk’s communicator, microcomputers, space travel and even recent glimpses of an actual invisibility cloaking device.

But right now, traveling at the speed of light, far beyond this century’s cynicism, the original broadcast transmission of the original STAR TREK has reached the nearest stars.

Putin's popularity ratings remain high

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said North Korea should not be driven into a corner if the world wants to rein in its nuclear weapons programme.

"You must never push one of the participants in talks into a corner", Mr Putin said in a live TV phone-in with Russians nationwide.

He said some negotiators "failed to find the right tone" with North Korea.

Mr Putin said a solution could be found "with goodwill". North Korea said on 9 October it had tested a nuclear weapon.

Mr Putin's phone-in is being broadcast on national television networks and major radio stations.

People can take part by telephone or e-mail, and residents in nine selected towns are putting their questions direct to Mr Putin.

More than a million questions have been submitted to the organisers' website, many about worries over wages, pensions and rising housing costs.

One of the towns chosen to take part directly is Kondopoga close to the border with Finland, where in August violent race riots erupted and businesses owned by migrants were attacked.
