That, she said, "provides clues about how the human brain accomplishes complex, goal-directed behaviors that require remembering and changing abstract rules, an ability that is disrupted in many mental illnesses."

Clip Source: dericbownds.net

Clip Source: www.physorg.com

You're about to leave work at the end of the day when your cell phone rings: it's your spouse, asking that you pick up a gallon of milk on the way home. Before you head out the door, though, your spouse calls again and asks you to stop by the hardware store too. Based on your knowledge of the area and rush-hour traffic, you decide to get the milk first and the toilet plunger second. But whoops! The phone rings again. This time, it's your boss, asking you to work late. That means another change of plans.

Adjusting our behavior to such changing circumstances enables us to achieve our goals.

But how, exactly, do our brains switch so elegantly and quickly from one well-entrenched plan to a newer one in reaction to a sudden change in circumstances?

do we simply remember a list of streets and turns, or do we remember a more abstract set of "rules" governing the web of relationships between the items

Tags: brain, complex behavior, decision making

<clipSource>http://dericbownds.net/uploaded_images/brain_memory.jpg</clipSource>

Democracy? cacophony? The advertising world has decided to take this particular lemon and make some lemonade by introducing a new concept that sees digital TV displays built straight into the armpits of shirts. This concept will be developed by deodorant manufacturer Right Guard, paving an interesting method to market its products. Of course, I would assume these displays will be waterproof since some of us tend to sweat it out a whole lot more in that particular body part.

Tags: wtf, armpit, tv, media, advertising

<clipSource>http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2008/07/armpit_advertising_a_first.html</clipSource>

Banner Manifesto on Highway One

clipped by: deadcowkid
clipper's remarks: project to bring a series of radical and contemplative statements to motorists on Highway 1 during rush hour. On Friday July 11th, a group of about 30 people brought together by Youth Coalition Santa Cruz (YCSC), the Resource Center for Nonviolence (RCNV), and the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz (VCSC) all participated in a project to bring a series of radical and contemplative statements to motorists on Highway 1 during rush hour. Dubbed, the "Freeway Banner Manifesto" by organizers, it was an attempt to display a different message on every overpass from Santa Cruz to Watsonville on Highway 1. The effort was sucessful and 13 different banners were displayed for aproxiamately 45 minutes right in the middle of rush hour. The project was spearheaded by members of YCSC and the other two organizations provided the numerous volunteers necessary for the undertaking.

<clipSource>http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/07/16/18516718.php</clipSource>

Anti-deportation rally for war resisters raises eyebrows

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: I reckon Dick would be pushing this barrow. To the sounds of honking car horns from sympathetic drivers, the ringing of bells from passing cyclists, and a kilted bagpiper, a couple hundred supporters of the U.S. war resisters formed a human chain along University Avenue from the American consulate to Queen Street West on July 10.

Waving placards that read “Let them stay” and “Stop the deportations”, it was a festival-like atmosphere and a strong showing of support for those American military personnel residing in Canada evading persecution from the U.S. Government for refusing to fight in the Iraq War.

With similar events taking place on July 10 across Canada, Lee Zaslofsky, spokesperson for the Toronto-based U.S. War Resisters Support Campaign, said there is a tremendous amount of concern for the incarcerated Long.

Sounds high, but it breaks down to eight riders per one-way trip. Since some people get off partway, five or six typically are aboard.

During a recent midday stretch, six to 22 people were aboard the streetcar during a 2 ½-hour period, while a rush-hour sampling found 20 to 30 riders.

crediting the streetcar with a share of pass sales, passengers still cover only about 14 percent of operations, compared with 22 percent for the countywide bus system.

Seattle is far behind Portland, whose first line surpassed 4,000 weekday rides within six months of starting service in 2001, and has since expanded. Sound Transit's free Tacoma Link, which opened in 2003, averages 2,925 trips per weekday.

Tags: slut, transit, metro, seattle, portland

<clipSource>http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2004433488_streetcar23m.html</clipSource>

Shorten your Rush Hour

clipped by: moonspirit4ever
clipper's remarks: I'm not a huge fan of Yaweh, but I couldn't resist this one

Clip Source: lh5.google.ca

<clipSource>http://lh5.google.ca/abramsv/R-ig1_XRfhI/AAAAAAAAMgs/VTIaQxfrGsY/s1600-h/480998900_b6f6c18f2c.jpg</clipSource>

Woman Says Joyriding Grandson, 7, Beat Her Up

clipped by: CrazyRedHead
clipper's remarks: O..M...G.

Clip Source: www.wpbf.com

A 7-year-old boy who took his grandmother's car on a joyride last month has been taken for a mental health evaluation after he allegedly beat her up inside a South Florida Wal-Mart

Latarian Milton told WPBF on April 28 that he took his grandmother's Dodge Durango on a joyride

"I wanted to do it because it's fun.
