"This discovery may eventually lead to enhanced understanding of psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention deficit disorder, all conditions in which a person's ability to remember and change such rules is impaired,"

"This indicates that different parts of our brains store different kinds of memories and information," Courtney said. That, she said, "provides clues about how the human brain accomplishes complex, goal-directed behaviors that require remembering and changing abstract rules, an ability that is disrupted in many mental illnesses."

You're about to leave work at the end of the day when your cell phone rings: it's your spouse, asking that you pick up a gallon of milk on the way home. Before you head out the door, though, your spouse calls again and asks you to stop by the hardware store too. Based on your knowledge of the area and rush-hour traffic, you decide to get the milk first and the toilet plunger second. But whoops! The phone rings again. This time, it's your boss, asking you to work late. That means another change of plans.

Adjusting our behavior to such changing circumstances enables us to achieve our goals.

But how, exactly, do our brains switch so elegantly and quickly from one well-entrenched plan to a newer one in reaction to a sudden change in circumstances?

do we simply remember a list of streets and turns, or do we remember a more abstract set of "rules" governing the web of relationships between the items

Armpit Advertising A First

Armpits aren't exactly the most desirable location to stare and (not to mention the awful smell in a packed train during rush hour), but it is something most people cannot avoid when taking public transport. The advertising world has decided to take this particular lemon and make some lemonade by introducing a new concept that sees digital TV displays built straight into the armpits of shirts. This concept will be developed by deodorant manufacturer Right Guard, paving an interesting method to market its products. Of course, I would assume these displays will be waterproof since some of us tend to sweat it out a whole lot more in that particular body part.

On Friday July 11th, a group of about 30 people brought together by Youth Coalition Santa Cruz (YCSC), the Resource Center for Nonviolence (RCNV), and the Volunteer Center of Santa Cruz (VCSC) all participated in a project to bring a series of radical and contemplative statements to motorists on Highway 1 during rush hour. Dubbed, the "Freeway Banner Manifesto" by organizers, it was an attempt to display a different message on every overpass from Santa Cruz to Watsonville on Highway 1. The effort was sucessful and 13 different banners were displayed for aproxiamately 45 minutes right in the middle of rush hour. The project was spearheaded by members of YCSC and the other two organizations provided the numerous volunteers necessary for the undertaking.

Supporters of the war resister movement line University Avenue during rush hour

To the sounds of honking car horns from sympathetic drivers, the ringing of bells from passing cyclists, and a kilted bagpiper, a couple hundred supporters of the U.S. war resisters formed a human chain along University Avenue from the American consulate to Queen Street West on July 10.

Waving placards that read “Let them stay” and “Stop the deportations”, it was a festival-like atmosphere and a strong showing of support for those American military personnel residing in Canada evading persecution from the U.S. Government for refusing to fight in the Iraq War.

With similar events taking place on July 10 across Canada, Lee Zaslofsky, spokesperson for the Toronto-based U.S. War Resisters Support Campaign, said there is a tremendous amount of concern for the incarcerated Long.

“When they issued a warrant for him ... they knew where to go. He’s not playing games, they’re playing games.”

Convincing the public that if an MP writes to the local Health Authority, he/she is only doing their duty is remarkable.
What makes matters worse is if, as in Blackpool, you have ineffectual Parliamentary representation, it is compounded by totally useless councillors. Much of the problem solving is local and should be undertaken by Councillors. Not so long ago,a former serviceman was working but could not find affordable accommodation. It took three years of pestering and cajoling before the Council could find habitable space for this disabled person, injured in the line of duty. Yet all around, DSS fraudsters duped the system and lived purely by their own rules. Couples open co-habitat at the tax payers expense. If you complain you are hit with the homophobia/race card. How come health young lesbians can afford taxis for every journey when truly disabled people have to use a bus pass? And anyone who had ventured down Hors

On Thursday, he may join the Parliamentary rush-hour away from Westminster, there being little business on Friday.

Nor should we forget that most of the rules and regulations governing our lives are made in Brussels.

But most of those voters' problem are local and can be handed over to councillors.

Or a member may simply pass on a voter's problem to one of those paid assistants (or relatives) provided through the public purse.

Chaos as crane collapses in NYC

At least two people have been killed and one seriously injured by the sudden collapse of a crane in New York's Upper East Side during the morning rush hour.

It crashed into the top floor of a 23-storey block of flats as it fell.

Seven buildings in the area have been evacuated as a precaution, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.

It is the second such incident in the city this year - seven people died in a crane collapse in the same wealthy Manhattan area in March.
