<clipSource>http://news.de.msn.com/Galerien/kurznotiert.aspx?cp-documentid=9444743&imageindex=13</clipSource>

Teacher Attacked Over Witch Claim

clipped by: cakebelly

Clip Source: www.clickondetroit.com

Police: Teacher Attacked Over Witch Claim

FERNDALE, Mich. -- Ferndale police said an adult education student tossed liquid on a teacher because he believed she was a witch who needed to be purified.

Police said 20-year-old Darin Najor of Ferndale threatened the teacher last month at Taft Education Center a day after confronting her about Arthur Miller's "The Crucible," which focuses on the Salem Witch Trials.

Detective Ken Denmark told The Daily Tribune of Royal Oak that Najor says he was trying to purify the teacher with holy water. Critics charge that with the aim of production at any cost, regardless of the damage to the surrounding people and land, Shell disrupted thousands of lives and wreaked havoc on the environment. In the early 1990’s, the people of Nigeria began to protest. Shell made payments and provided arms to security forces that they knew to be abusive to local communities. The military government violently repressed the demonstrations and arrested and bribed witnesses. Nine leaders of the demonstrations were murdered, including the aforementioned well-known activist and writer, Ken Saro-Wiwa.

Clip Source: www.earthrights.org

Judge Kimba Wood of the U.S.

Sounds like a run on a few banks in the UK could strap them for cash. Do they have the equivalent of FDIC, are the people accounts insured by the government? The moves are to provide enough "cash on hand for day to day operations"--i.e. consumer withdrawals:

To address the collapse of confidence in money markets, the standby facility should ensure big banks have enough cash to fund day-to-day operations.

Clip Source: news.bbc.co.uk

The Model unifies the smallest building blocks of all matter and three of nature’s four forces in one single theory.

The spontaneous broken symmetries that Nambu studied, differ from the broken symmetries described by Makoto Kobayashi and Toshihide Maskawa. These spontaneous occurrences seem to have existed in nature since the very beginning of the universe and came as a complete surprise when they first appeared in particle experiments in 1964.

It is only in recent years that scientists have come to fully confirm the explanations that Kobayashi and Maskawa made in 1972. It is for this work that they are now awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. They explained broken symmetry within the framework of the Standard Model, but required that the Model be extended to three families of quarks. These predicted, hypothetical new quarks have recently appeared in physics expe

Clip Source: www.sciencedaily.com

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2008 with one half to Yoichiro Nambu, of the Enrico Fermi Institute at the University of Chicago, "for the discovery of the mechanism of spontaneous broken symmetry in subatomic physics,"

and the other half jointly to Makoto Kobayashi, of Japan's High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK) and Toshihide Maskawa, of the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP) at Kyoto University, "for the discovery of the origin of the broken symmetry which predicts the existence of at least three families of quarks in nature."

The fact that our world does not behave perfectly symmetrically is due to deviations from symmetry at the microscopic level.

As early as 1960, Yoichiro Nambu formulated his mathematical description of spontaneous broken symmetry in elementary particle physics. Spontaneous broken symmetry conceals nature’s order under an apparently jumbled surface.

Tags: physics, particle physics, nobel prize, quarks

<clipSource>http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/10/081007104921.htm</clipSource>

Ozone Reducing Crop Yields

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken

Clip Source: www.upi.com

Ozone reducing crop yields

LONDON, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A British study suggests ozone is reducing the yield and nutritional value of agricultural crops across the world.

The report from the Royal Society said background concentrations of ozone have increased in parts of the Northern Hemisphere by 6 percent each decade since the 1980s.

Researchers said ozone, which is formed when sunlight reacts with pollutants and naturally occurring chemicals in the air, damages crops such as wheat, rice and soybeans.
