Airport Rules Changed After Ron Paul Aide Detained

An angry aide to Rep. Ron Paul, an iPhone and $4,700 in cash have forced the Transportation Security Administration to quietly issue two new rules telling its airport screeners they can only conduct searches related to airplane safety.

In response, the American Civil Liberties Union is dropping its lawsuit on behalf of Steve Bierfeldt, the man who was detained in March and who recorded the confrontation on his iPhone as TSA and local police officers spent half an hour demanding answers as to why he was carrying the money through Lambert-St. Louis International Airport.

The new rules, issuedin September and October, tell officers “screening may not be conducted to detect evidence of crimes unrelated to transportation security” and that large amounts of cash don’t qualify as suspicious for purposes of safety.

TSA had earlier defended the search, though it had criticized officers’ abusive behavior.

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums needs to explain tax mess or resign

The debt owed to this city by Dellums is incalculable and there is nothing but pride - or arrogance - standing between him and a full public disclosure of the facts surrounding his tax problem.

Anything short of that constitutes unacceptable behavior by a public official and violates the public contract between an elected official and the constituency the office serves. I tried to reach the mayor for comment - but he declined to speak with me, his press secretary Paul Rose told me.

No one has asked Dellums to disclose anything that any other politician in the same set of circumstances wouldn't be asked to explain.

If he cannot provide a public explanation for a controversy that has become another national embarrassment for this city, it's difficult to see how continuing in his current position is going to be good for anyone - either him or Oakland's citizens.

Oakland Mayor Ronald V. Dellums owes the residents of this great city an explanation.

And if he can't provide one, he owes his resignation.

He is a hometown hero entrusted with the highest public office Oakland can offer. His $239,000 tax bill is peanuts compared with the weight of his responsibility as Oakland mayor.

Anyone can make an honest mistake, and if that's all this is, then no harm, no foul.

But Oakland residents deserve to know why the mayor was unable to handle his legal obligation to pay income taxes, because it's a reflection of his ability to handle responsibility, including the management of a city that has placed its trust, and a whole lot more, in his hands.

If Dellums can't come clean with the people who put him in office, the same people he promised would benefit from the transparent operations of the mayor's office, there is no reason left for residents to believe anything else he has to say.

Despite the fact that Obama on Friday declared a national emergency in response to the H1N1 outbreak, he apparently doesn’t deem it enough of a threat to have his two daughters vaccinated against the virus.

Such double standards have led media pundits to call for Obama to get his daughters vaccinated on live television, in an effort to encourage American parents to do the same for their kids. The swine flu vaccination program, which was initially intended to be a “mass” inoculation covering the entire population, has been rejected by a majority of Americans who harbor deep suspicions about dangerous additives contained in the vaccine such as mercury and squalene.

On Tuesday, Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Bob Corker (R-TN) introduced "The Federal Reserve Accountability Act," an attempt to kill HR 1207/S 604 by passing a bill that prevents a full audit and full transparency from America's secretive central bank.

While language in this bill would permit a limited audit of the Fed's actions in the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) and similar high profile bailouts, it would not allow an audit to review the Fed's inflation of the money supply or its agreements with foreign central banks, among other shortcomings.
Let your senators know you expect them to support the American people's demand for full transparency, not some watered down measure designed to stop a full audit!

As readers of this blog may be aware, I'm an adherent to the theory of Richard Muller that says that a son of bin Ladin may be impesonating his voice, and that bin Ladin may in fact be dead.

I pointed out that credible scientists have suggested that the CIA might be fooled by fake audio tapes purporting to be from Osama bin Ladin, whereas in fact bin Ladine might be dead. As suggested by that certain blood relatives of the bin Ladin—one of his sons to be specific—can mimic bin Ladin’s voice well enough to fool the CIA

I believe that there is a credible chance that flawed intelligence is being used to assess Osama bin Laden is alive. In particular, Dr. Richard A. Muller of Cal Berkeley published in Technology Review (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) a scenario in which it may be possible to fool the CIA’s best voice identification software.

But whatever happened yesterday, I have a sneaking suspicion the flying Jiffy Pop balloon was not originally conceived, built and being tested as an innovative commuting vehicle.

It’s not for nothing Shepard Smith and everyone else was comparing that thing to a UFO yesterday. Maybe, like the Richard Dreyfuss character in ”Close Encounters of the Third Kind,” Richard Heene was just strangely compelled to make his experimental 3DLAV commuting device look like a traditional Roswell-inspired flying saucer hoax.

My local radio talk-show pal Michael Graham questions whether its a hoax. How could anyone plan anything that would fly the way that did and attract the kind of attention that did? And what kind of gain could he possibly expect?

I dunno. The guy’s showing all the signs of being a full-throttle crackpot visionary. He claims he was trying to devise a way for commuters to fly over rush-hour traffic. Plotting a publicity grab doesn’t seem nearly as complicated.

(Gotta say I’m kind of with Balloon Dad on this one. YouTube: “Fake or Real? Is Hillary Clinton Reptillian?” Pretty strong crazy vibe, though. Sort of a psychotic stink.)

Cops are now initiating a hoax investigation, though they insist they think the Heenes are on the up-and-up. NYT’s The Lede. Not clear to me how any sober law enforcement personnel can spend as much time in this guy’s company as any casual Internet surfer or American TV viewer has and not report back “bat-shit crazy.” Surber’s on to something. Farmers Arrested Planting Hemp on DEA Headquarters Lawn

Currently eight states -- Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, North Dakota, Vermont, and West Virginia -- allow industrial hemp production or research, but federal law, which requires nearly-impossible-to-obtain-permits to grow hemp, trumps those state laws. A bill introduced by Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) would allow states to craft their own policies.

A group of civilly-disobedient hemp farmers and business leaders were arrested Tuesday morning while digging up the lawn to plant industrial hemp seeds at the headquarters of the Drug Enforcement Administration.

David Bronner, the president of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps, a more than 60-year-old company that does tens of millions of dollars of business annually, was among those arrested.

"Our kids are going to come to this museum and say, 'My God. Your generation was crazy. What the hell is wrong with you people?'" he said as Arlington County Police handcuffed him and walked him to a waiting car.

The group was arrested for trespassing.

Wayne Hauge and Will Allen, farmers from North Dakota and Vermont respectively, brought shovels and seeds to the protest, where they were joined by representatives of Vote Hemp, which advocates for federal legislation that would allow states to craft their own hemp policies.

"The DEA would have arrested George Washington," he said.
