McCaskill's edge

I mentioned a few days ago that Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill's mild affect masks a bit of a killer, and that she's perhaps the Obama campaign's deftest surrogate on the attack.

But I was still kind of amused by her brief interaction with Mitt Romney in the press file just now.

McCaskill was stepping out of her chair at the end of an MSNBC interview, and Romney was up next. She and a staffer unplugged her various wires, and she handed Romney the earpiece the guests use to hear the host.

"I spit on this before I put it in," she said to Romney, with a sweet smile.

UPDATE: Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom emails: "You should have seen what she did to the chair."

What began in January with Mike Huckabee’s “Christian Leader” ads in Iowa and subterranean attacks on Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith has further degenerated into false rumors about Barack Obama’s faith and ugly stories about a “witch-hunting” pastor who once blessed Sarah Palin.

In the long history of religion in presidential campaigns, the 2008 race may well be remembered as the sleaziest and most disturbing example of misusing religion to win votes and demonize the opposition.

But in Campaign 2008, the debate about who is and isn’t an authentic Christian has sunk to new lows.

In this theology-saturated climate, both Obama and McCain have felt compelled to emphasize their Christian bona fides in the race for the White House — as though the nation is electing a Christian in chief rather than a commander in chief.

But there is a critical difference between faith as motivation and faith as manipulation.

Journalists continue to ask, “What was John McCain thinking in selecting the gaffe-prone Gov. Sarah Palin?”

Recently, for example, in an exclusive interview with news anchor Katie Couric, Palin gushed, “When the stock market crashed, Franklin D. Roosevelt got on the television and didn’t just talk about the, you know, princes of greed. He said, ‘Look, here’s what happened.’ ” Apparently the former Alaskan beauty queen failed to realize that in 1929 there was neither widespread television nor was Franklin Roosevelt even President.

For example, Palin — who has had past associations with reactionary groups — caused a storm earlier when she characterized Democratic Presidential nominee Barack Obama in seemingly racialist terms: “I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.”

Mitt Romney is as qualified or more qualified than I am to be vice president of the United States of America.

A dispatch by Jason Szep of Reuters carries the headline "Palin's Troubles Mount for McCain in White House." What are these "troubles"? Here's the list:

An editor at Newsweek wrote a column saying that Palin is "unqualified."
Palin's interviews with CBS, Fox News and ABC "raise questions over her nomination and dealings with the media."
Palin faces "a stubborn investigation into charges that as governor she abused her power by firing a public safety commissioner."
A conservative columnist "called on Palin to step down ."
Palin has been mocked on "Saturday Night Live" and "Late Show With David Letterman."
A "conservative New York Times columnist . . . called her candidacy 'embarrassing.' "
Mitt Romney "questioned the campaign's strategy of restricting Palin's media exposure."

Except for the "stubborn investigation," all of these "troubles" are troubles with the media. One wonders why Szep did not include his own article in the list.

If a racial epithet is used by accident, does it still give offense? Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney called his state's Big Dig construction project a "tar baby," which originally referred to a sticky situation (from a Brer Rabbit story) but came to assume the additional connotation of a derogatory term for black people. Romney may find his usage of the phrase a tar baby — as did White House spokesman Tony Snow in May — especially if he decides to run for president:

Some 500 freemen have exercised their medieval right to drive sheep across London Bridge to raise charity funds.

A herd of 15 Romney ewes was taken across the bridge seven times on Friday in a relay by groups dressed in official 17th Century freemen's robes.

They hope to raise £40,000 for charities Wellbeing of Women and Orbis.

Freemen of the City of London date back to 1237, when the title was awarded to craftspeople who became the only people in the city with the right to vote.

The freemen met the Lord Mayor of the City of London David Lewis and Lady Mayoress Theresa Lewis before the event began from the north-side of the bridge.

the sheep from a farm in Ashford, Kent, had been trained "to accept the noise" of the rush-hour in the City and cheering crowds.

Last month Amanda Cottrell, from Challock in Kent, drove sheep over the bridge to publicise the restoration of Canterbury Cathedral and a scheme backing local food production.

I have to say I find David Frum's lonely intellectual honesty on the right at the moment to be very refreshing. He airs a very sensible email from a reader here. Money quote:

Foreign policy excepted, can you tell me what McCain's governing philosophy is? He has changed positions on numerous occasions times during the past ten years, going from being one of the most centrist GOP senators to one of the most conservative ones. Mitt Romney wasn’t content to insist that he personally knows that “liberals don’t have a clue.”

Why liberals don’t stand up to this garbage, I don’t know. Without the extraordinary contribution of liberals — from the mightiest presidents to the most unheralded protesters and organizers — the United States would be a much, much worse place than it is today.

Palin and McCain's Shotgun Marriage

Sarah Palin makes John McCain look even older than he is. And he seemed more than willing to play that part on Thursday night. By the time he slogged through his nearly 50-minute acceptance speech - longer even than Barack Obama's - you half-expected some brazen younger Republican (Mitt Romney, perhaps?) to dash onstage to give him a gold watch and the bum's rush.

The only problem, of course, is that the entire thing was a sham.
