Winged cats have been known to exist since the 19th century, but only a handful of people have actually seen—let alone owned—one. This woman in Sichuan province watched as her beloved kitty grew angel wings on his back last summer after a bunch of female cats tried to mate with him. "Many female cats in heat came to harass him, and then the wings started to grow," she said.

Geneticists have a less romantic theory. They believe it could be a genetic defect, a skin condition, or the result of poor grooming.

Pelosi: Oil Companies Should Pay Royalties

Democrats have been clamoring for legislation that allowed oil companies drilling in the Gulf of Mexico in 1998 and 1999 to pay a reduced royalty even though the price of oil had risen substantially. The royalty break was an incentive to drill amid low oil prices. Democrats have suggested that companies be required to repay the back royalties if they want federal leases in the future. Republicans have called that a breach of contract with the drillers.

In addition, The Denver Post reported Sunday that federal investigators are preparing to release a report detailing improper relationships between Interior Department officials who oversee offshore drilling and oil executives, including golf outings, ski trips and romantic liaisons.

Also, Pelosi has been pushing to end tax breaks granted to oil companies.

“You want to talk about drilling offshore? Let’s talk about profits made by the oil companies without paying royalties,” Pelosi said Monday morning before members of the California delegation to the Democratic National Convention. “They’re taking your oil without paying any royalties.”

Earlier this month, Pelosi announced that she could support including offshore drilling in a larger package of changes to the nation’s energy policies. She had resisted drilling as a “hoax” that wouldn’t lower prices. But she relented after she was pushed by Republican lawmakers and her party’s own vulnerable members, who’ve seen public support for drilling soar this summer along with gasoline prices.

But her remarks Monday morning made it clear that she expects some renegotiation of what the federal government gets for its oil. Oil and gas offshore and under much of the nation’s public lands is owned by the government.

Larry Kart has sent in an interesting post on “The Dark Knight” that deserves better than being buried at the end of that painfully long thread:

Lord knows this party is over, but I’m surprised, now that I’ve seen TDK, that no one (or virtually no one) has mentioned what to me is clearly the most expressive (as in “oppressive”) aspect of the movie: The swooping, “circle the principals” camera work and the similarly obtrusive, “Look schmuck, this is linked to that!” editing, all of which is designed to give the film an air of perpetual stress and emergency,

As an aside, I’d just note that the “circle the principals” move Larry describes has become as ubiquitous in contemporary films as the zooms of the 1970s – to me, it’s just another sign of lazy direction, like Altman’s slow zooms in on a single figure in one of his clothesline ‘scope compositions. You see it in romantic comedies as well as action films.

Elegy makes strange bedfellows

In Elegy, philosopher-historian David Kepesh (Ben Kingsley) falls in love with Consuela (Penelope Cruz), who is a Cuban-American student.

Movie adaptations of the works of famous authors can serve as a form of literary criticism.

The new film, Elegy, taken from another Roth work, puts Ben Kingsley in bed with the stunning Penelope Cruz. It's a lot less jarring than Human Stain, at least in the sense that a gorgeous, unsure-of-herself Cuban-American student could fall for her brilliant, celebrated and ever-on-the-make professor. But it lacks both the sexual heat and romantic warmth to really work.

Occasionally touching, always interesting, Elegy may capture the essence of Roth, but it never lets him off the hook for being the eternal dirty old man, playing out some dirty old man's wish-fulfillment fantasy.

The romantic lives of Alzheimer’s patients made headlines this week with news that the 77-year-old husband of retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, John Jay O’Connor III, has found companionship with a woman in the nursing home in which he lives. The two patients reportedly spend time together and hold hands, even in the presence of Justice O’Connor.

Cleveland's Historic Cultural Gardens Are Focus of Attention

It's hard to imagine a better symbol of Cleveland than the city's Cultural Gardens. That's a mixed statement, of course, which is exactly the point.

The gardens, launched formally in the mid-1920s, adorn approximately three miles of leafy Rockefeller Park from University Circle to Lake Erie on Cleveland's East Side. The park, born in the late 19th century, was conceived as a romantic swath of greenery in the tradition of New York's Central Park.

Today, however, Rockefeller Park has been reduced primarily to a parkway for automobiles, and many of the Cultural Gardens have slid into squalor.

Despite the decay, the future of the gardens and the park is brighter than it has been in decades.

Nationality groups belonging to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens Federation are reinvesting in the gardens, building new monuments and staging myriad public events to bring life back to the park.

The romantic delusion of the writer's life is feverishly working on that one great idea, that Great American Novel, that once completed will catapult you to fame, fortune, movie deals, an endless stream of sexual encounters and cocktail parties etc. But while people do occasionally pull it off, only an idiot would expect The Life to work that way. Mostly it's work, and getting paid for it, because it's not about how much money you can earn, it's about living to write another day.

On your end, two things are absolutely necessary if you ever hope to succeed as a writer:

1. You must write.

2. You must survive.

So you write to survive, and you survive to write. It's really that simple, and those are the two things that you can control.

Most of what's beyond that is out of your hands, most of the time. The more control you have the better but, as most people learn pretty quickly, control isn't all that easy to wrest from those who hold it.
