"Tropic Thunder" Comedy Mocks Hollywood And Movie-Makers

clipper's remarks: To save the movie, director Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan) decides to shoot it documentary-style, with his actors improvising in the jungle. But that idea also goes awry, and the gun-toting actors find themselves up against a drug lord and his minions' real guns.

The premise is amusing, though the actual plotting doesn't always make sense, especially when the actors have to face the real-life villains.

And as it goes along, the pleasure is not so much from character development as a series of set pieces, such as African-American Chino's view of Lazarus' vision of an African-American, or Grossman's attempts at crisis management.

Indeed, Cruise may be the funniest thing in the movie, although he gets competition, notably from Downey and from Jay Baruchel as Kevin Sandusky, the non-star in the acting ensemble. And movie buffs will have fun picking up on the allusions to other films, especially Apocalypse Now.

Tropic Thunder is loud, tasteless and crude. It is also funny for the most part, and very knowing about the way Hollywood views the world.

Indeed, the movie's skewering of Hollywood is crucial to any assessment of its use of stereotypes.

But Tropic Thunder is in its way sympathetic to the very people criticizing it. The whole point of Simple Jack is that an actor — in this case Tugg Speedman, the character played by Tropic Thunder director Ben Stiller — will use the most extreme stereotypes in playing a disabled person, just to win awards.

But it's interesting to hear such an extended discussion of how part of Tropic Thunder is perceived when so much of the movie is about perception — including how filmmakers perceive their audiences, how actors perceive themselves and even how audiences perceive what they see on screen.

A recent quote from Robert Downey, Jr., whose new movie Iron Man is already box office gold, touches on what may perhaps be a relatively new political outlook for him and the reason behind it:

I have a really interesting political point of view, and it’s not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can’t go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can’t. I wouldn’t wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics ever since.

Does he really consider himself a conservative now? Or is he just a tad to the right of someone like Michael Moore? The jury’s still out. But the fact that he doesn’t like to mention his newfound “proclivities and politics” while dining at Spago is certainly telling about the stifling political atmosphere in Hollywood.

The biggest movie of the summer just became the biggest movie of the year.

Iron Man became the first film of 2008 to pass the $300 million mark at the domestic box office today.

The Robert Downey Jr. career-resuscitating, comic-book adaptation had grossed an estimated $299.3 million through Tuesday, per the number crunchers at Box Office Mojo, and should have reached the milestone by the time you read this.

Wednesday's totals were not yet available, but the film has so far made no less than $680,000 per day in ticket sales, meaning if the Marvel flick didn't hit the mark last night, it's a statistical certainty it will do so today.

Worldwide, the film has grossed an additional $250 million, bringing its global gross to more than $550 million.

And yes, a sequel is on its way.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Cartoon character Tinkerbell, singer Shakira and "Iron Man" Robert Downey Jr. and actress Cameron Diaz were among a diverse group of 25 stars named on Thursday to join the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said the celebrities will each get their star on its Walk of Fame next year, but the dates have not been announced.

The Walk of Fame is a stretch of sidewalk lining either side of Hollywood Boulevard on which celebrities in music, movies, television and other entertainment arenas have their names emblazoned in brass set into large, pink terrazzo stars.

A committee of the Chamber of Commerce chose the 25 stars from among hundreds of nominations.

Others on the list include director Tim Burton, and actors Sir Ben Kingsley, William H. Macy and Hugh Jackman. Among the television stars are Macy's wife, Felicity Huffman, producer Mark Burnett and music stars include Kenny "Baby Face" Edmonds and disco-era band The Village People.

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Iron Man" will become the first picture of the year to hit $300 million at the North American box office on Thursday.

Through Tuesday, the Marvel-produced comic book adaptation had rung up an estimated $299.3 million in the United States and Canada. And with recent daily grosses for "Iron Man" of no less than $680,000, there was no question about its blowing past the rarefied $300 million mark Thursday.

Last year produced a trio of $300 million movies, led by "Spider-Man 3" with $336.5 million. It took just 23 days to hit $300 million, while "Iron Man" required 51 days. Still, expectations were not nearly as lofty for the Robert Downey Jr. picture before it opened on May 1.

Last May kick-started two other $300 million grossers: "Shrek the Third" ($322.7 million) and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" ($309.4 million).

I am an 80's kid, so obviously I'm a fan of Robert Downey Jr. If you grew up in the 80's you couldn't help, but like the guy. He played cocky and edgy roles in teen movies for the greater part of a decade. Unfortunately drugs got the best of him for a while, but now he is kicking butt again. His performance as Tony Stark in "Iron Man" is simply brilliant!

[Robert Downey Jr makes this movie. He is super cocky and cool, NOT modest like other super heroes. I was blown away by how clever this movie was put together. You guys have to see this!]

LOS ANGELES — When we think of Gwyneth Paltrow, we tend to envision something of acting royalty, a classic princess branded by artful roles in "Shakespeare in Love," "Great Expectations" and "Emma."

In her latest role, however, Gwyn plays a superhero sidekick in "Iron Man" — and she can't believe people are surprised at seeing her in a sci-fi adventure flick.

"Everyone has the wrong idea of me. I have absolutely nothing against doing a movie with all kinds of special effects. As long as the people involved are going to make me better at what I do, I’ll do any genre," a somewhat offended Paltrow responded when asked why she was finally doing a "different" type of film. "Maybe not porn, but anything else."

It is just as well that Paltrow's co-star Robert Downey Jr. kept her "on her toes" and kept their on-screen relationship "sexually charged." Otherwise, he would have ended up on the Oscar-winner's black list.

"Iron Man" Rock Solid No. 1 In Debut

(AP) "Iron Man" was pure gold at the box office.

The Marvel Comics adaptation, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the guy in the metal suit, hauled in $100.7 million during its opening weekend and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, the second-best premiere ever for a non-sequel, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The movie, distributed by Paramount, is the first release by Marvel Studios, which has begun financing its own productions after such studio-backed hits as the "Spider-Man," "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four" flicks.

Debuting in second place with $15.5 million was Sony's romantic comedy "Made of Honor," starring "Grey's Anatomy" heartthrob Patrick Dempsey as a man who tries to woo his best pal after she asks him to be "maid of honor" at her wedding.

Iron Man battles to $100m debut

Iron Man has proved its mettle and exceeded box office expectations by taking an estimated $101m (£51m) in its opening weekend in the US and Canada.

If the figures are confirmed, the comic book adaptation will become one of only 10 films to have broken the $100m barrier in its first three days.

It had been expected to take $70m-$80m (£35m-£40m) between Friday and Sunday.
