Intertia from the cultural revolution was still a potent force on thinking at the time. I remember that when people held meetings, the hall would usually have big photos of Mao and Hua hanging front and center. Mao was called "great teacher" (伟大导师) and Hua was the "wise leader" (英明领袖). The official statement on the arrest of the Gang of Four was "The Party Central Committee led by Chairman Hua smashed the Gang of Four." Singers performed a song praising him: "In Jiaocheng's mountains, Jiaocheng's rivers, Jiaocheng has brought forth a Commissar Hua." His thick Jiaocheng, Shanxi accent and his calligraphy (said to be in the style of Yan Zhenqing) made the biggest impression on people, and the nameplates of newspapers and even institutions like Renmin University were written in Hua's Yan script.

Man would divert rising seas to inland aquaculture

TASTIOTA, Mexico - A few miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, amid cracked earth and mesquite and sun-bleached cactus, neat rows of emerald plants sprout from the desert floor.

The crop is salicornia. It is nourished by seawater flowing from a man-made canal. And if you believe the American who is farming it, this incongruous swath of green has the potential to feed the world, fuel our vehicles and slow global warming.

He is Carl Hodges, a Tucson, Ariz., atmospheric physicist who has spent most of his 71 years figuring out how humans can feed themselves in places where good soil and fresh water are scarce.

Hodges sees opportunity. Why not divert the flow inland to create wealth and jobs instead of disaster?

He wants to channel the ocean into man-made "rivers" to nourish commercial aquaculture operations, mangrove forests and crops that produce food and fuel.

(08-14) 18:03 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Dead zones where fish and most marine life can no longer survive are spreading across the continental shelves of the world's oceans at an alarming rate as oxygen vanishes from coastal waters, scientists reported Thursday.

The scientists place the problem on runoff of chemical fertilizers in rivers and fallout from burning fossil fuels, and they estimate there are now more than 400 dead zones along 95,000 square miles of the seas - an area more than half the size of California.

The number of those areas has nearly doubled every decade since the 1960s, said Robert J. Diaz, a biological oceanographer at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.

"Dead zones were once rare, but now they're commonplace, and there are more of them in more places," he said.

Lake Chad once was the sixth-largest lake in the world, but in 45 years it has shrunk to half the size of Rhode Island - only 10 percent of its earlier size.

The shallow body of water borders four countries: Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria - and provides water to 20 million people.

In Nigeria, the shrinking lake has a huge effect on human health - farmers find it more difficult to siphon water into irrigation and they have a harder time growing food, which means people become more vulnerable to diseases like malaria and yellow fever.

Scientists say water diversion (irrigation and new dams on nearby rivers) and drought are equally to blame for the shrinking lake levels.

Police intervened to prevent the mob from killing her. “She has been taken to Teme Clinic,” said Rita Inoma-Abbey, Public Relations Officer of the Rivers State police command. “Police will be guarding her so that she will not disappear” (Although if she were really a shape-changer she could presumably turn into a bird and fly away).

Another supposed witness told a different story. “I saw the accident as it happened,” he said. “I saw the car hitting a woman. I didn’t see any cat and it was surprising when everybody said she was a cat and started beating her up instead of helping her. Where is the other cat that they claimed was killed while trying to cross along with her? As far as I am concerned, that story of the woman being a cat or a witch was cooked up. She’s no cat. I think some people have remote-controlled her fate like this.”

On 22 May, the story goes, three cats were crossing the busy Aba/Port Harcourt Expressway near Garrison Junction in Nigeria’s Rivers State when they were hit by an okada (motorcycle taxi). One escaped, another was killed, and the third, which was injured, writhed on the ground and turned into a woman, described by journalist Bolaji Ogundele as both “middle aged” and as “a beautiful young lady”. A crowd soon gathered, accused her of being a witch and began to beat her up with planks and anything else to hand. After the beating, according to an alleged witness who gave his name as Darlington, the woman said she and her two companions had taken the form of cats and had came to Port Harcourt from Abuja to kill three people with witchcraft. They had succeeded in killing two, but the third, “who I guess might be a pastor”, had proved too difficult to kill and they were preparing to go back to Abuja when the accident happened.

Prehistoric land under the sea

It's a landscape no human has even seen. And those who live right beside it had no idea it even existed.

Deep below the sea, off the north coast of Northern Ireland, a dramatic geological mystery has been discovered.

Huge cliffs, vast basins and plateaus, a lake and even rivers have been found. But so far no-one is certain what caused them to end up like this deep under the sea.

The discovery was made when the seabed was being surveyed to update old Admiralty charts, drawn up in the mid-1800s.

Funded by the European Union and backed by the UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency, a survey vessel has been scanning the seabed along most of the north coast of Ireland, including the seabed north of Rathlin Island.

Most of the bottom was largely flat and unremarkable, but as the survey headed east it suddenly came across an unexpected landscape.

Local man wants to tackle violence

Event aimed at raising awareness of violent crime in Lowcountry

Barron Rivers said he wants to do something to stop the violence.

Rivers, of Fo Sho Recordz, a soon-to-open recording studio, and 928 Media, will host block parties on the last Sunday of each month beginning July 29 in the Gas Lite Square area at Remount Road and Rivers Avenue.

Rivers is hoping a new event called "Stop the Violence Sundays" will help bring out the community to solve the problem.

"We are just saying stop the violence, period," Rivers said.

The event will include dance contests, food, vendors and music. He is calling it Charleston's first drive through concert. Guests include Magic 101.7 radio hosts Anthony Baxter and Frankie The Big Bopper.

"We're using music as an avenue to bring kids out," Rivers said.

Each summer, fly fishing guides like Andrew Hanson help hundreds of travelers explore the rivers of southwestern Montana. Last summer, Hanson was responsible for 207 people who arrived at the airport in Butte, Mont., to begin their adventures. Many arrived on Delta's SkyWest flight from Salt LakeCity, Utah; others arrived on Horizon Airlines flight from Seattle.

But later this month, those options will dwindle. And as ticket prices in and out of Butte rise, more and more people will start their journeys from airports farther away.

"If people are going to fly into the Bozeman airport, they're more likely to fish with lodges close to the Bozeman airport," Hanson, partner and manager of the Complete Fly Fisher, told ABCNews.com.

To help prevent Butte's businesses from going under, the town is asking its residents to rally. On Tuesday, Butte's chamber of commerce holds a community meeting where as many as 150 people could join forces to save Butte's Bert Mooney Airport.

clipper's remarks: Behind the veil of “clean skies,” however, smog and soot and very small toxic particulate matter are still pouring out of the pipes of cars, trucks, the containerized shipping industry that drives global commerce, airplanes, incinerators, large farms and factories. These microscopic particles cause inflammation and injury to the lungs and the blood, killing thousands and condemning many more to life with asthma. Runoff from agribusiness, industry and suburban trophy lawns still flows through our (non-burning) rivers, creating dead zones off our shores and sickening swimmers on our beaches.

This is happening because industries have become experts at delaying and manipulating the work of EPA through political pressure and legal tactics. And EPA analysts cut and paste corporate-generated studies and analysis into their findings. As a result, the EPA often acts as if it were protecting the earnings of regulated industries rather than the public’s health.

The next president ought to turn his attention to the Environmental Protection Agency right away because President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney made EPA into a pollution protection agency.

From the moment of its inception, in December 1970, EPA was caught in a trap. The agency copied its predecessors — the giant Departments of Agriculture; Interior; and Health, Education and Welfare.

EPA relied too heavily on “end-of-the pipe” pollution controls that failed to eliminate toxins from our neighborhoods, workplaces and bodies. This meant that EPA granted factories and farms a daily quota of pollution — and by extension, if we’re being honest — gave permits to harm or kill a predetermined number of Americans.

Despite the defects of such “regulation,” we have made some progress. Rivers no longer burst into flames and the air is less visibly polluted.
