Hurricane batters tourist islands Nicaragua

Hurricane Ida swept onto Nicaragua's Atlantic coast on Thursday, battering two islands popular with tourists.

Ida dumped as much as 20 inches of rain on the mainland. Corn Island and nearby Little Corn Island, two popular tourist destinations, were hit by gale-force winds, toppling tress and knocking out power.

Boats were also smashed, and 45 homes damaged. More than 3-thousand people were evacuated before the storm hit. No deaths or injuries have been reported.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The ginkgo tree is renowned for its hardiness, surviving everything from road salt to an atomic bomb, but it may be undone by another trait — it reeks.

Iowa City was one of many communities that planted ginkgoes in the 1970s only to discover that after years without problems, some of the trees can begin dropping large seed shells, creating a sticky, slimy, smelly mess. The smell makes some think of rotten eggs, while others are reminded of vomit.

"We have no recourse at this point," said Terry Robinson, superintendent of the city's forestry division. "It creates a sanitation problem for us because we have to be down there cleaning it up as often as possible.

Some cities have started cutting down ginkgoes, while others are standing by their trees and even planting more of them.

NASA released two stunning photos of galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, whose massive gravity distorts the galaxies' shape and sends them ripping through the cluster at unimaginable speeds

The image above shows NGC 4402 and highlights some telltale signs of ram pressure stripping such as the curved, or convex, appearance of the disc of gas and dust, a result of the forces exerted by the heated gas. Light being emitted by the disc backlights the swirling dust that is being swept out by the gas. Studying ram pressure stripping helps astronomers better understand the mechanisms that drive the evolution of galaxies, and how the rate of star formation is suppressed in very dense regions of the Universe like clusters.

NGC 4522 is a spectacular example of a spiral galaxy that is currently being stripped of its gas content. Its rapid motion within the cluster results in strong winds across the galaxy as the gas within is left behind

Barack Obama gave five interviews last Sunday, and only one interviewer bothered to ask him about the ACORN scandal. ACORN is the leftist activist organization that lost its federal funds last week in a congressional vote that was not even close. Obama’s answer to his lone ACORN question was amazing. He brazened it out: “Frankly,” said the president, “it’s not something I’ve followed closely. This is not the biggest issue facing the country. It’s not something I’m paying a lot of attention to.”

Not something he’s paying a lot of attention to. This is the same Barack Obama who said, in an address to ACORN in 2007, said, “I have been fighting alongside ACORN on issues you care about my entire career.”

One of Barack Obama’s jobs out of college was with ACORN as a community organizer. Obama hired ACORN affiliates for voter registration. Obama was a speaker at ACORN seminars. Obama was their lawyer.
