Notting Hill Carnival marred by violence

More than 300 people have been arrested after London's famous Notting Hill Carnival was marred by violence.

The arrests were made throughout the two-day event, which ended on Monday night (Tuesday morning AEST) with riot police battling a group of about 40 youths throwing bricks and bottles on the streets of nearby Ladbroke Grove.

Knives, a Taser stun gun, CS spray and a baseball bat were also seized by police on patrol during the carnival, which aims to celebrate Caribbean culture with colourful street parades.

Muslim Clerics Stand Behind Bombers, Threaten Violence

Prominent Islamic clerics led by the Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Maulana Ahmed Bukhari, on Thursday came out in support of madrassa teacher Mufti Abu Bashar, arrested for his alleged involvement in last month's serial bombings in Ahmedabad, and demanded the government stop "undue harassment of Muslims".

Joined by Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi, MP from Mumbai, Bukhari virtually sounded a bugle of revolt against what he termed the "anti-Muslim" policies of the Indian investigating agencies.

While both Azmi and Bukhari termed the police action as "biased", Bukhari went to the extent of issuing a warning, "If the government does not take early measures to bring an end to undue harassment of Muslims who are indiscriminately labeled as terrorists, this country is in for another partition; So let us be prepared for nation wide riots and violence.

There's a famous joke about a pair of 1930s Jews, sitting on a park bench in Berlin reading the newspapers. The first Jew notices that the second Jew is reading Der Stürmer, the infamous Nazi weekly. Incredulous, he asks why.

Oil has long been regarded as the commodity with the most potential for economic mischief, and the one around which much of the world’s geopolitics revolves. But food is making a case for itself this year.

Riots and protests over food prices have broken out in 30 countries since 2007. Haiti’s prime minister was tossed out of office in April, largely because of protests over the price of food, and the Malaysian government is looking none too stable for similar reasons. In South Africa, discontent over soaring food and fuel prices provided the spark for violence that killed dozens of illegal immigrants last spring. Even in the United States, wholesalers such as Costco limited the amount of rice each person could buy, unsettling some consumers. It’s possible that the most consequential price spike of 2008 will be in food, not oil.

In the video here, taped at the Campus Progress journalism conference earlier this month, the Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Seymour Hersh reveals how the neocons convened around Dick Cheney and brainstormed ways to kick off World War III, as they fondly call their pet project to take out the Muslims and foment a contrived “clash of civilizations.”

According to Hersh, this meeting occurred after the neocons failed miserably to stage a rehashed version of the Gulf of Tonkin incident in the Strait of Hormuz, mostly because it is no longer 1964 and such Big Lies — thanks to the internet and bloggers — are far more difficult to float.

“For all I know, our Navy was shooting at whales out there,” quipped LBJ about the imaginary act of North Vietnamese boats supposedly attacking U.S. ships, leading to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution and undeclared war in Southeast Asia, ultimately resulting in the death of nearly 60,000 Americans and around 3 million Southeast Asians.

Internal World Bank study delivers blow to plant energy drive

Biofuels have forced global food prices up by 75% - far more than previously estimated - according to a confidential World Bank report obtained by the Guardian.

The damning unpublished assessment is based on the most detailed analysis of the crisis so far, carried out by an internationally-respected economist at global financial body.

The figure emphatically contradicts the US government's claims that plant-derived fuels contribute less than 3% to food-price rises. It will add to pressure on governments in Washington and across Europe, which have turned to plant-derived fuels to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases and reduce their dependence on imported oil.

Rising food prices have pushed 100m people worldwide below the poverty line, estimates the World Bank, and have sparked riots from Bangladesh to Egypt. Government ministers here have described higher food and fuel prices as "the first real economic crisis of globalisation".

Angry crowds have attacked government buildings in south-west China in protest at the death of a teenage girl.

Reports said several thousand people took part in the riots, setting fire to police stations and cars in Wengan county in the province of Guizhou.

Local residents were angered after a police inquiry concluded that the girl, found dead in a river earlier in June, had committed suicide.

Her family accused the son of a local official of raping and killing her.

"About 10,000 people rushed to the site and totally burned down the county party office building, and burned other offices in the county government.

"They also burned about 20 vehicles, including police cars," the official said.

AFP news agency said riots had erupted on Saturday when the girl's uncle was pronounced dead in hospital after seeking justice for his niece.

It quoted locals saying he had been badly beaten - it is not clear by whom.

clipper's remarks: It was way back in 1969 that the reality of using the useless Landrover in urban streets became a hindrance to the military. In those days the Military hierarchy was so subdued by the politicians that the cannon fodder was expected to accept every stupid dictate from Whitehall.
Nothing could have been more demonstrative than when Support Company 41 Commando was ordered to stop the Ian Paisley march, after the opening of his new church. They were ordered to form a square and use conventional anti-riot formations, even though the Marines had discarded the ill-conceived practices in Aden, three years earlier.
The MoD and the politicians still move at the same pace.

(New York City) Barack Obama will fight for equal rights for gays just as he fought to help working-class families overcome poverty, the Democratic presidential hopeful's wife told a gay Democratic group Thursday night.

Recalling his past work as a community organizer to help struggling families, Michelle Obama said he would take the same approach as president.

"Barack believes that we must fight for the world as it should be, a world where together we work to reverse discriminatory laws," she said at a Manhattan fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee's Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council.

Michelle Obama also drew a connection between the struggles for gay rights and civil rights.

"We are all only here because of those who marched and bled and died, from Selma to Stonewall, in the pursuit of a more perfect union," she said at the event, held days before the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots between gays and New York police, and the city's annual gay pride parade.

Nini, represented by a kite, is being viewed as a reference to the "kite city" of Weifang, in Shandong, where there was a deadly train crash last month

World’s Largest Maker of Crop Nutrients: Famines May Occur Without Record Harvests

While the food supply situation has skated along a knife edge so far this year, with higher prices and many countries experiencing food riots, widespread famine did not take hold.

Now, this growing season, when yields need to be at record levels to avert disaster, what do we find? Floods or droughts in several of the breadbaskets of the world.

How can so many people, even those who should know better, be content to hit the wall without doing anything at all to change course? This includes my own family, who lives in Southern California.

I have noticed that most people don’t even have instinct enough to panic and hoard, and they wouldn’t know *what* to hoard.

We’ve already seen food riots, armed escorts for grain deliveries, rationing, sharply higher prices.

Perhaps we spent too much time watching Monty Python movies and singing "Always look on the bright side of life," but we thought that there was perhaps a good side to high gas prices, that people would change their habits to adapt, and suddenly the world would be filled with small efficient cars, lots of mass transit, all food would be locally grown and every new home would be New Urbanist or multifamily, mainly in reborn Buffaloes or Detroits with a bicycle in every garage and an organic chicken in every pot. Oh, and CO2 levels would drop like a stone in this bucolic New Jerusalem.
