From the Caspian Sea to South America, Western oil companies are being squeezed out of resource-rich provinces. They are being forced to renegotiate contracts on less-favorable terms and are fighting losing battles with assertive state-owned oil companies.

“This is an industry in crisis,” said Amy Myers Jaffe, the associate director of Rice University’s energy program in Houston. “It’s a crisis of leadership, a crisis of strategy and a crisis of what the future looks like for the supermajors,” a term often applied to the biggest oil companies. “They are like a deer caught in headlights. They know they have to move, but they can’t decide where to go.”

And much of their production is in mature regions that are declining, like the North Sea.

Tags: oil, crisis, exxon, shell, bp

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/19/business/19oil.html?_r=1&em&oref=slogin</clipSource>

TERIYAKI PORK CHOPS

clipped by: cjt0424

Clip Source: thecrepesofwrath.wordpress.com

Teriyaki Pork Chops
1 cup soy sauce
2 tbsp sesame oil
1 heaping tbsp sugar
4 cloves garlic, minced
5 stalks green onion, minced
2 tbsp ginger root, minced (or more or less depending on your taste)

1. Mix all of this into a tupperware container or a ziploc bag and marinate for at least 30 minutes or as long as 24 hours.
2. Grill to appropriate internal temperature (the recipe says to cook to 160F and then off the grill, tent the chops with foil and rest fo 5 minutes, but we just cooked them to 165ish).
3. Serve along with some vegetables or rice.

<clipSource>http://thecrepesofwrath.wordpress.com/2008/06/07/teriyaki-pork-chops/</clipSource>

Chicken and Yogurt

clipped by: moondollie

Clip Source: www.dianaskitchen.com

But food is making a case for itself this year.

Riots and protests over food prices have broken out in 30 countries since 2007. Haiti’s prime minister was tossed out of office in April, largely because of protests over the price of food, and the Malaysian government is looking none too stable for similar reasons. In South Africa, discontent over soaring food and fuel prices provided the spark for violence that killed dozens of illegal immigrants last spring. Even in the United States, wholesalers such as Costco limited the amount of rice each person could buy, unsettling some consumers. It’s possible that the most consequential price spike of 2008 will be in food, not oil.

<clipSource>http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200809/food-scarcity</clipSource>

The Caspian Oil Wars have begun..!

clipped by: TJColatrella

Clip Source: www.indymedia.org.uk

Tags: bush, georgia, south ossetia, oil, gas, condi rice, missiles, poland, saakasvilli, russia

<clipSource>http://www.indymedia.org.uk/images/2008/08/406295.jpg</clipSource>

Crispy Chocolate Chip Pecan Cookies

clipped by: nattykhoo

Clip Source: havecakewilltravel.com

Both cities are on the main east-west highway that slices through two Georgian mountain ranges. Russia also confirmed Sunday that it had taken over a major power plant in western Georgia.

Rice noted that the text of the cease-fire, negotiated by French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the current leader of the European Union, outlined a very limited mandate for the soldiers that Russia calls peacekeepers who were in Georgia when hostilities escalated. As it happens, Chapter 1, Article II of the U.N. Charter, signed amid the smashed borders of World War II, forbids Members from the "use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state." The U.S. and France should force Mr. Putin's U.N. ambassador to veto a Security Council resolution describing his week-long mockery of those words.

Additionally, a genuinely independent prosecutor investigating war crimes might examine the Russian bombing runs over Georgia and the looting of Georgian villages by Ossetian militias. An intriguing article by Pavel Felgengauer in Novaya Gazeta, the Russian newspaper, argues that an examination of the movement of the ground equipment and ships used in the strike against Georgia required planning that predated August

Clip Source: online.wsj.com

In Washington yesterday, President Bush issued a statement of precisely the sort the world expects from American leadership in such circumstances.

"The United States and our allies stand with the people of Georgia and their democratically elected government," Mr. Bush said. In other words, the Russians have made no pretense that their purpose in Georgia is to remove President Mikheil Saakashvili from the office to which he was elected in 2004.

Mr. Bush also noted pointedly that "The days of satellite states and spheres of influence are behind us." It has become clear through this week that Mr. Putin's rationale for the invasion extends beyond Georgia's violated borders. His intent is to convince independent nations on Russia's periphery -- Ukraine, the Baltic states -- that persisting as Poland has to deepen formal ties to the West, particularly NATO, will cost them dearly. In crudest terms, it will be fatal.

This would be a reversion to the vassal-state relationship of the Cold War

Tags: georgia, president saakashvili, president bush, sec-def robert gates, secretary of state rice, putin

<clipSource>http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121884390619045939.html?mod=opinion_main_review_and_outlooks</clipSource>
