Question: What is "in-transit visibility'?

Answer: "In-Transit visibility" is defined by the military as tracking the identity, status, and location of cargo, passengers and personal property from origin to consignee or destination across the range of military operations. Supply chain and logistics clients would describe in transit visibility as chain of custody of goods between two points. Thinking more broadly - one could include public transit in the definition as the movement of people in a transit system - where they are, where they make their electronic payments..hmmm - does that extend the value chain? Just asking? Can MOBILEFusion add mapping and LBS to electronic wallets and near-field RFID backend? Yes...

How RFID Tags Could Be Used to Track Unsuspecting People

A privacy activist argues that the devices pose new security risks to those who carry them, often unwittingly

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags are embedded in a growing number of personal items and identity documents.

Because the tags were designed to be powerful tracking devices and they typically incorporate little security, people wearing or carrying them are vulnerable to surreptitious surveillance and profiling.

Worldwide, legislators have done little to address those risks to citizens.

Average consumers may not realize how many RFID tags they carry around. The devices are embedded in personal items and even some clothing.

The new licenses come equipped with radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags that can be read right through a wallet, pocket or purse from as far away as 30 feet.

RFID Provides Utility Company With Real-Time Visibility

A Canadian utility company tracks reels arriving and departing from its distribution center and storage yards, thereby reducing theft and out-of-stocks.

The utility company wanted the ability to track the reels, both in its distribution center and in open storage yards where reels are stacked—typically three high, in 300 by 400 meter (980 by 1,300 foot) outdoor spaces, before they are taken to the construction site. In the long term, the company intends to track the reels all the way to the construction site, using GPS technology on trucks (a feature already built into the MOBILEFusion platform). The current deployment, however, is focused simply on warehouse and yard management using RFID.

Canadian-based AppLocation, a specialist in wireless supply chain tracking, has announced it has been awarded a contract to track cable reels in a network of supply yards across Canada. The system will use active RFID tags and the company’s MOBILEfusion platform to track cable reels from a distribution center to nine yards, with the prospect of expansion to 50 yards in the future.

The planned system will deploy thousands of heavy duty industrial active RFID tags, and a company spokesman indicated that as the system expands, AppLocation will also work passive RFID into the platform, as well as GPS devices for the trucks used in transit. The initial installation of the system is expected to be completed by October of 2008.

Appears to be one of the largest yard management project s using RFID to date. Interesting that RFID is only one part of the solution - putting GPS, RFID and handset apps on one platform is pretty novel. GS-1 had a pilot but it took 5 companies with different sets of software to achieve end to end supply chain.
