One of your colleagues submits this proposal:

First, we will set up a single goal to represent educational success, which will take four years to achieve no matter what is being taught. We will attach an economic reward to it that seldom has anything to do with what has been learned. We will urge large numbers of people who do not possess adequate ability to try to achieve the goal, wait until they have spent a lot of time and money, and then deny it to them. We will stigmatize everyone who doesn't meet the goal. We will call the goal a "BA."

You would conclude that your colleague was cruel, not to say insane. Should the screenings turn up serious blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose or weight problems the employees have a year to turn things around or start paying $25 for insurance that's otherwise free.
Alabama already charges workers who smoke but obesity is an even bigger problem for the state, which is ranked second in terms of national obesity rates.
To be fair, the state will offer employees access to a wellness program to help them. But you have to wonder - is an extra bill of $25 a month really going to get people to change their bad habits and/or start paying attention to their health? Yet what a person might believe in a given situation is pretty deterministic...

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

If the universe moves according to immutable laws, how can individuals have free will? This is an excellent question, and one that the "What's going on here then?" tag-team of science and philosophy has been unable to answer.

Psychological researchers questioned people about their feelings on free will, then gave them the chance to cheat at an irrelevant, minor arithmetic challenge that had absolutely no reward.

Half of the participants got a passage saying

There will be a school for social change and in-depth agricultural programs.

Staff persons who've served for four years and want a little distance from the intensity of the hospital can create their fantasy living space in our village.

I want to tell all readers that the journey has been heavenly all along the way. Simply being in an idealist quest is its own reward. I've never felt I've sacrificed anything or thought it was a hard journey. Hard would have been having to work in corporate medicine and lie to patients and myself every day. My concern for humanity's future drives me to want to put whatever efforts I can to changing everything that hurts people and nature. The Gesundheit! Institute is that for me, and so many others.

Clip Source: www.patchadams.org

The Gesundheit! When we don't meet these needs, the business of high-tech medicine diagnoses mental illness and
treats with pills.

We wanted patients to bring all their interests and skills to essentially become temporary staff as
well as patients during their stay

we have

If the prediction is right, that series of predictions gets reinforced

if the prediction is wrong, the software reevaluates its representation

The crucial feature of these dopamine neurons, say Montague and Dayan, is that they are more concerned with predicting rewards than with the rewards themselves. Once the cells memorize the simple pattern — a loud tone predicts the arrival of juice — they become exquisitely sensitive to variations on the pattern.

He’s linked the transactions of a single neurotransmitter to a dizzying array of behaviors

stock market bubbles

the breakdown of social graces

“fictive error learning signal,”

Tags: science, brain

<clipSource>http://www.seedmagazine.com/news/2008/08/a_new_state_of_mind.php</clipSource>
