A recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found if John McCain were to pick a running mate who favors legal abortion, it could cost him votes, particularly in some core Republican groups.

Among current McCain supporters, 20 percent said they'd be less likely to vote for McCain if he picked a candidate for vice president who favors abortion rights.

Prominent Islamic clerics led by the Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid, Maulana Ahmed Bukhari, on Thursday came out in support of madrassa teacher Mufti Abu Bashar, arrested for his alleged involvement in last month's serial bombings in Ahmedabad, and demanded the government stop "undue harassment of Muslims".

Joined by Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi, MP from Mumbai, Bukhari virtually sounded a bugle of revolt against what he termed the "anti-Muslim" policies of the Indian investigating agencies.

While both Azmi and Bukhari termed the police action as "biased", Bukhari went to the extent of issuing a warning, "If the government does not take early measures to bring an end to undue harassment of Muslims who are indiscriminately labeled as terrorists, this country is in for another partition; So let us be prepared for nation wide riots and violence.

The warfare that commenced was short and very one-sided.

This might just send a whole lot of conservatives to third party candidates and ensure Obama a win--unless there is an October Surprise (false flag attack), which would help the military veteran.

Lieberman ‘on McCain short-list’

Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic vice-presidential nominee who has endorsed John McCain, is being vetted as a potential running mate for the Republican presidential hopeful, according to an adviser to Mr McCain’s campaign.

Mr Lieberman, who has campaigned for the Arizona senator, has long been considered an unconventional but plausible choice for Mr McCain.

Although Democrats have rejected Mr McCain’s image as a maverick politician, Mr Lieberman’s support for the presumptive Republican nominee has, much to the chagrin of his former colleagues, helped to boost Mr McCain’s reputation as a bi-partisan legislator with friends on both sides of the aisle. Mr Lieberman, a staunch supporter of Israel, could also help Mr McCain win over Jewish voters.

“Conservatives would be pissed as hell – I think you would have a revolt, but sometimes John does what John wants to do,” the McCain adviser said.

Barack Obama is not a left candidate. This fact has seemingly surprised a number of progressive people who are bemoaning Obama’s “shift to the center.” (Right-wingers are happy to join them, suggesting Obama is a “flip-flopper.”) It’s sad that some who seek progressive change are missing the forest for the trees. But they will not dampen the wide and deep enthusiasm for blocking a third Bush term represented by John McCain, or for bringing Obama by a landslide into the White House with a large Democratic congressional majority..... Massachusettes Awakening?

Massachusetts is about the last place one would expect a tax revolt, but that's what's brewing in Beantown, says the Wall Street Journal. The state board of elections recently certified that citizen activists have gathered the 125,000 signatures required to qualify an initiative for the November ballot to eliminate the state income tax.

The Small Government Act would repeal the 5.3 percent income and wage tax, as well as the state capital gains tax, which reaches as high as 12 percent.

The ballot initiative would replace the $12.5 billion in taxes with . . . nothing.

"One of the points here," explains Carla Howell of the Committee for Small Government that is driving the referendum, "is to force the state legislators to start cutting the bloated state budget."

They have cause to be worried:

Citizens for Limited Taxation discovered that the average Massachusetts voter believes that 41 cents of every state tax dollar are wasted.

that's the share of the state budget funded by the income tax.

Stop frightening the old and disabled. If you are getting ready to withdraw this concessionary package, at least have the courage to say so.
Just because the average politician cannot do simple accounts, do not think that the average OAP or disabled person is so inflicted. We all know you rely on the inertia of the electorate, but many passengers on the busses are being forewarned of your duplicity. You used legalese to silence the revolt growing over he abandonment of the L1 service in Blackpool. You will get more than a whimpering reaction if you do not tell the truth about the realities of life with and without bus services.
But from the expense claims submitted to Councils, it must be gleamed that no councillor uses a bus?

Concern over real cost of free bus travel

The concessionary bus pass scheme has proved a huge hit with Lancashire pensioners who have been able to travel for free.

But high demand from the county's over 60s has caused concern in Red Rose town halls, and some politicians now worry whether their authorities can actually afford to subsidise free travel.

Bus companies report increased passenger numbers and there has been a boost in the number of visitors to tourist areas like Lytham, Morecambe and Lancaster, now more accessible for older people.

Preston was allocated £590,000 to fund concessionary fares in the city, but senior figures at the town hall claim the total needed could be nearer to £4m.

GOP'ers protest over energy -- best show in town

This is Day Two of the GOP revolt over energy, and the debate is taking place in a darkened House floor with no microphones, no lights and no C-SPAN cameras (on orders of the Democratic speaker). So Republican congressmen pushing for an up-or-down vote on offshore oil drilling have taken to twittering (notifying an army of folks, in 40-word bites), posting Qik and YouTube videos and corralling unsuspecting tourists to plead their case to the public.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi adjourned the House Friday over Republican objections, saying that offshore oil drilling is a false hope and that rushing back from vacation to vote on it would "mislead the American people as to thinking it's going to reduce the price at the pump." At the White House, spokesman Tony Fratto said the president would not call Congress back from vacation because Pelosi might then just gavel them back into recess again.

When the tobacco industry was feeling the heat from scientists who showed that smoking caused cancer, it took decisive action.

In May this year, the multibillion-dollar oil giant Exxon-Mobil acknowledged that it had been doing something similar. It announced that it would cease funding nine groups that had fuelled a global campaign to deny climate change.

Exxon's decision comes after a shareholder revolt by members of the Rockefeller family and big superannuation funds to get the oil giant to take climate change more seriously. Exxon (once Standard Oil) was founded by the legendary John D. Rockefeller. Last year, the chairman of the US House of Representatives oversight committee on science and technology, Brad Miller, said Exxon's support for sceptics "appears to be an effort to distort public discussion".

While Speaker Nancy Pelosi is busy trying to "save the planet" Republicans in Congress took to the House floor today in Day Two of our protest against the Democrat Majority for refusing to hold a vote on drilling for more American oil.

The Democrat Majority in Congress is literally trying to keep Americans in the dark on lower gas prices. On Friday, after Speaker Pelosi gaveled the House to adjournment for a month-long vacation, Republicans announced we were prepared to stay and debate the energy bill to increase the supply of American oil and reduce our dependence on oil from unstable regimes in the Middle East. So what did Speaker Pelosi do to show leadership? She turned out the lights, shut off the microphones and tried to shut out reporters from covering the GOP debate. The headline on Drudge Report Friday afternoon blazed: "REVOLT ON THE HILL: LIGHTS OUT."

Continuing with their guerilla tactics from last week, House Republicans will be back on the floor Monday to talk gas prices, even though Congress is in recess, and they may stay there all week.

"In an urgent memo sent to GOP Members and staff Saturday (“A Call to Action on American Energy”), Republican Leader John Boehner (R-) and Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) hailed Friday’s action, and encouraged House Republicans to return to the Capitol beginning Monday morning to help keep the historic effort going," said a press release just released by Minority Leader Boehner's office.

“It’s not a request we make lightly. But the American people are suffering,” Boehner and Blunt said in the memo. “The consequences of continued congressional inaction on gas prices are unacceptable. We’ve called on the Speaker to call Congress back into an emergency session this month and schedule a vote on the American Energy Act. We must continue to make a stand until the Speaker complies.”

House Republicans Gas "Talkathon" To Continue Monday

The session will not be televised, but Republicans felt they got a lot of good press out of Friday's "revolt," so they will be back at it again, and younger GOP lawmakers were clearly energized by the tactic, something not evident among Republicans for most of the 110th Congress.

MSM shrugs at GOP revolt over drilling

On Friday, NewsBusters wondered how much attention media would pay to the Republican revolt that occurred after Speaker Pelosi adjourned the House for a five week vacation without allowing a vote on offshore oil drilling.

It turns out that if you rely on the evening news programs of the three broadcast networks, you didn't hear about this extraordinary event at all

And, if you're one of the few people that still reads newspapers, the one thrown on your driveway Saturday morning likely also ignored this story, or buried it well off the front page.

As for newspapers, the New York Times alloted 520 words to this issue Saturday...on page A16. The Washington Post gave it 402 words...on page A3.

The results of a LexisNexis search suggest the Los Angeles Times, the Boston Globe, the Chicago Tribune, and the San Francisco Chronicle all ignored this revolt.

With gas and oil prices on the minds of Americans from coast to coast, how could any press outlet not cover this story?

The “most open and ethical House ever” went dark– and C-SPAN and every other media outlet were powerless to broadcast the proceedings of the GOP revolt–because Nancy Pelosi and the Dems didn’t want the public to see and hear the voices of GOP lawmakers on the House floor talking about their energy proposals.

“This is the people’s House,” Rep, Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.) said. “This is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”

Democratic aides were furious at the GOP stunt, and reporters were kicked out of the Speaker’s Lobby, the space next to the House floor where they normally interview lawmakers.

“You’re not covering this, are you?” complaing one senior Democratic aide. Another called the Republicans “morons” for staying on the floor.
