Just hours before presumptive Republican presidential candidate John McCain is expected to announce his running mate, the speculation over who the pick will be has reached frenzied proportions.

McCain, R-Ariz., is scheduled to announce his choice at a noon rally in Dayton, Ohio, and just who the pick is has become the best-kept secret in politics

ABC News has confirmed that two of the presumed finalists are no longer in contention: former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty will not join McCain on the Republican ticket

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/sahara/512/6ADC3999-C43C-4EB9-9DD2-D0755BC63088.jpg" alt="Graphic pic of Sen. Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, according to her spokeswoman Sharon Leighow, will not be on hand for the McCain event in Dayton but instead plans to be at the State Fair in Alaska.

Another curve ball is the fact that other possible pick, Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., is already in Ohio to attend the rally. But the McCain campaign says VIPs are gathering to show unity behind the new ticket

Clip Source: abcnews.go.com

The issue of abortion may be key to McCain's choice.

There was an unspoken threat of intervention. This grew sharper after the insurgents, refusing a Spanish offer of partial autonomy, determined to fight for full freedom.

The warfare that commenced was short and very one-sided.
Peace was arranged by the Treaty of Paris signed Dec. 10, 1898 (ratified by the U.S. Senate, Feb. 6, 1899). The Spanish Empire was practically dissolved. Cuba was freed, but under U.S. tutelage by terms of the Platt Amendment (see under Platt, Orville), with Spain assuming the Cuban debt. Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to the United States as indemnity, and the Philippines were surrendered to the United States for a payment of $20 million.

Clip Source: plus.aol.com

Spanish-American War, 1898, brief conflict between Spain and the United States arising out of Spanish policies in Cuba. This fact has seemingly surprised a number of progressive people who are bemoaning Obama’s “shift to the center.” (Right-wingers are happy to join them, suggesting Obama is a “flip-flopper.”) It’s sad that some who seek progressive change are missing the forest for the trees. But they will not dampen the wide and deep enthusiasm for blocking a third Bush term represented by John McCain, or for bringing Obama by a landslide into the White House with a large Democratic congressional majority..... Reprinted from the People's Weekly World Newspaper

So Republican congressmen pushing for an up-or-down vote on offshore oil drilling have taken to twittering (notifying an army of folks, in 40-word bites), posting Qik and YouTube videos and corralling unsuspecting tourists to plead their case to the public.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi adjourned the House Friday over Republican objections, saying that offshore oil drilling is a false hope and that rushing back from vacation to vote on it would "mislead the American people as to thinking it's going to reduce the price at the pump." At the White House, spokesman Tony Fratto said the president would not call Congress back from vacation because Pelosi might then just gavel them back into recess again.

<clipSource>http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/presidentbush/2008/08/get-congress-ba.html</clipSource>

Who is behind climate change deniers?

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: A good read, especially if you are a denier, or work/mix with any deniers.

Clip Source: www.watoday.com.au

When the tobacco industry was feeling the heat from scientists who showed that smoking caused cancer, it took decisive action.

In May this year, the multibillion-dollar oil giant Exxon-Mobil acknowledged that it had been doing something similar. Republicans in Congress took to the House floor today in Day Two of our protest
against the Democrat Majority for refusing to hold a vote on drilling for more
American oil.

The Democrat Majority
in Congress is literally trying to keep Americans in the dark on lower gas
prices. On Friday, after Speaker Pelosi gaveled the House to adjournment for a
month-long vacation, Republicans announced we were prepared to stay and debate
the energy bill to increase the supply of American oil and reduce our dependence
on oil from unstable regimes in the Middle
East. So what did Speaker Pelosi do to show leadership? She turned
out the lights, shut off the microphones and tried to shut out reporters from
covering the GOP debate. The headline on Drudge Report Friday afternoon blazed:

We must continue to make a stand until the Speaker complies.”

Update - Neither Boehner nor Blunt are expected to be in attendance at Monday's talkfest, and its unclear if they will show up at any point during the week.

The session will not be televised, but Republicans felt they got a lot of good press out of Friday's "revolt," so they will be back at it again, and younger GOP lawmakers were clearly energized by the tactic, something not evident among Republicans for most of the 110th Congress.

hotair at following link:

http://hotair.com/archives/2008/08/03/its-on-house-republicans-oil-protest-to-resume-tomorrow/

Clip Source: www.politico.com

Continuing with their guerilla tactics from last week, House Republicans will be back on the floor Monday to talk gas prices, even though Congress is in recess, and they may stay there all week.

More than a dozen Republicans have already committed to make appearances, according to House GOP leadership aide, including National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Tom Cole (Okla.).

Rep.
