These locals have long viewed the dragons as a reincarnation of fellow kinsfolk, to be treated with reverence. But now, villagers say, the once-friendly dragons have turned into vicious man-eaters. And they blame policies drafted by American-funded environmentalists for this frightening turn of events.

"When I was growing up, I felt the dragons were my family," says 55-year-old Hajji Faisal. "But today the dragons are angry with us, and see us as enemies." The reason, he and many other villagers believe, is that environmentalists, in the name of preserving nature, have destroyed Komodo's age-old symbiosis between dragon and man.

"People are scared because, every day, the dragons come down and eat our goats," complains Ibrahim Hamso, secretary of the Kampung Rinca village. "Today it's a goat, and tomorrow it can be our child."

A year ago, a 9-year-old named Mansur was one such victim.

And he talks too much.

And there's the 2007 ABC interview in which Biden said he would stand by an earlier statement that Obama was not ready to serve as president.

It seems Obama is worried that some voters are starting to agree.

McCain, like Republicans generally, reveres Ronald Reagan. But such reverence seems to involve an obligatory sunniness, which suits neither McCain nor this moment. A great political thinker of the last century, Raymond Aron, was right: "What passes for optimism is most often the effect of an intellectual error." McCain must convince voters that Obama's complacent confidence in the taming abilities of soft power is the effect of liberalism's scary sentimentalism about a dangerous thing, human nature, and a fiction, "the community of nations."

McCain is hardly the change many people have been eagerly waiting for, but Putin is part of the change we must confront. Until Russian tanks rolled into Georgia, it seemed that not even the Democratic Party could lose this election. But it might if McCain can make it turn on the question of who is ornery enough to give Putin a convincing, deterring telephone call at 3 a.m.

Neocons Now Love International Law

It’s touching how American neoconservatives who have no regard for international law when they want to invade some troublesome country have developed a sudden reverence for national sovereignty.

Apparently, context is everything. So, the United States attacking Grenada or Nicaragua or Panama or Iraq or Serbia is justified even if the reasons sometimes don’t hold water or don’t hold up before the United Nations, The Hague or other institutions of international law.

However, when Russia attacks Georgia in a border dispute over Georgia’s determination to throttle secession movements in two semi-autonomous regions, everyone must agree that Georgia’s sovereignty is sacrosanct and Russia must be condemned.

U.S. newspapers, such as the New York Times, see nothing risible about publishing a statement from President George W. Bush declaring that “Georgia is a sovereign nation and its territorial integrity must be respected.”

In a shipyard in New Orleans, survivors of one disaster are building a monument to another

Bringing together America’s two great calamities of the 21st century, the USS New York is being built in New Orleans with 24 tonnes of steel taken from the collapsed World Trade Centre.

There is no shortage of scrap metal in New Orleans these days, but the girders taken from Ground Zero have been treated with a reverence usually accorded to religious relics. After a brief ceremony in 2003, about seven tonnes of steel were melted down and poured into a cast to make the bow section of the ship’s hull.

Some shipworkers say the hairs stood up on the backs of their necks the first time they touched it. Others have postponed their retirement so they can be part of the project.

There was a time, not all that long ago, when he was the invisible man whose name was a battle cry, his appearance known to most people only from an out-of-date photograph, a hidden hero on a prison island off the coast of Africa.

But as he celebrated his 90th birthday Friday, Nelson Mandela was anything but invisible, a figure of reverence whose nine decades have been marked and observed at a huge rock concert in Hyde Park in London, a gala dinner for his children's charity in the august, chandeliered Long Room at Lord's cricket ground, and a host of tributes.

For patriotic Americans holding traditional value this was a bit of civic blasphemy.The presumptuousness was only outdone by the lack of reverence for existing symbols of the U.S.

Obama played the race card - loudly and blatantly. He suggested, with no evidence whatsoever, that Republicans were pointing to his race as a reason to question his fitness for the presidency. That tactic seemed further evidence that his effort to minimize race are over and he now intends to use race as a sword to attack his Republican opponent. It however is a potentially dangerous strategy, certain to turn off some segment of white voters who do not want to be bludgeoned by racial politics.

Barack Obama is endangering his status as the media darling of the 2008 presidential campaign. In fact, he has been the villain in the campaign story over the last few days.

The trigger for the downward slide was his decision to abandon public financing.

To make matters worse he concocted a false and misleading, indeed an “operatic” explanation that those mean Republicans forced him to take private money.

And for once, the media joined in the Obama-bashing and perhaps was even harsher.

In short, the campaign finance move exposed the Great and Powerful Oz as an ordinary man behind that curtain.

The second incident was comical but telling. Obama had a faux seal of the U.S. — a knock off of the Great Seal — constructed for his benefit.

Never have they questioned or examined the messiah-complex which envelops the Obama movement. Certainly, they have not seriously examined the arrogance of a man who knows so little but claims such grand wisdom.

George Carlin Changed the World

Today is a very sad day, indeed. One of the greatest masters of all time has left the planet, joining the other late comic geniuses in what must certainly be the only true heaven, where laughter reigns supreme.

Those of us of a certain age surely feel as if George Carlin was one of our dearest friends.

A true sage who unblinkingly examined reality without blinders on, George Carlin dripped with enlightenment and wisdom, brilliantly using comedy to help the human race along in its evolutionary path. With all the talk about "spiritual masters" who deserve our reverence, in my opinion Carlin was a real master who truly loved the world and worked to better it by raising up the issue of individual freedom and personal creativity. In fact, I hold George Carlin in such high regard that I like to "joke" that he is my prophet (pot be upon him).

I'm thinking that George's passing truly signals the end of the era - the end of the party, in fact.

Vases Stolen From Vet's Graves

Cemetery officials said the vases started disappearing in April and that 28 of them have been taken.

"When they start stealing the vases, they start hurting the families. That's pilferage. All they wanted was money for these because they're not worth anything to anybody unless you cash them in for salvage or something," said Bob Hooper of the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs.

"We don't have the manpower for guards. It's a cemetery. It's not supposed to be armed guards and it's not supposed to be lit at night. It's supposed to be solitude and a place for reverence," Hooper said.

The vases cost about $180 and sit near the headstones of the graves to hold flowers.

Frieda Dehne said she walks through the area daily and was sad to hear about the thefts.

"There's no respect for nothing anymore. It's awful," she said.

Police have beefed up patrols in the area. They said they believe the vases are being sold for scrap metal.

Hooper said the cemetery will replace them.

Caracas, Jun 3, 2008 / 04:43 pm (CNA).- Father Jorge Loring, the famous Spanish Jesuit apologist, said this week Catholics who are not able to give a reason for their faith fall easy prey to religious sects such as the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Many Catholics are only so in name, he said, “but they don’t know how to defend the faith” or “to give reasons for being Catholic.” Therefore they are at risk of being deceived by a non-Catholic, the Spanish priest stated during a visit to Valencia in Venezuela.

“Therefore it is very important to have roots in the faith, to have a strong faith that stands up to the winds of the anti-Catholics,” he added.

Father Loring went on to say, “Moral relativism is the ideological cancer of our times,” as “people are fooled by the media because everything goes.”

Father Loring is author of the book, “Para Salvarte” (To Be Saved), which has sold over one million copies in Spain.
