Months after the initial announcement, today, it becomes official: Yahoo has shut down GeoCities — one of the original kings of free web hosting services.

Now, all of those GeoCities websites (excuse me, "Web Sites") are coming down. It's got me more tear-jerkingly nostalgic than Where The Wild Things Are.

No doubt, GeoCities started a revolution, but many of its ways have gone by the wayside. While Yahoo deploys the virtual demolition crews, let's make one last toast to a few of the relics they'll leave in the rubble.

The brightest light after hours along the stretch of Franklin Street at 15th is a green neon martini glass above the entrance of the Layover lounge.

Gone are the pool-playing patrons, cheap booze and vinyl bar stools. In their place are recycled wood shelves, hand-sewn throw pillows, retro hanging lamps, plush arm chairs and a lot of gold, purple and green.

Think Las Vegas meets Marrakech, circa 1970.

The owners put a creative bare-budget, do-it-yourself spin on the kind of eclectic places scattered about cities around the world. Thus the name, Layover

local DJs operating from a small stage, or music from an Internet juke box installed near the bar and programmed by Martinez and Turner with mod, ambient tunes.

The drinks are in the medium price range. A martini (alas, served less than chilled in my case) and a Seven and Seven cost $16. The plum whiskey buck cocktail, a mixture of ginger beer, fresh lemon juice and plum jam from Martinez's backyard, goes for $8.

Alien Abduction Lamp released

This lamp has been a long time coming and we’ve been waiting patiently for our chance to see cows in mid-abduction. It has finally gone from prototype to reality. You gotta love the aliens peering out of the UFO windows.

This final version of the lamp features LEDs that light up the alien cockpit, and a steel retro spacecraft over an illuminated tractor beam. You can have the light always on or a pulse lighting effect behind the windows. When you turn the lights off, the aliens glow in the dark.

And yes, it comes with a plastic cow.

An Australian woman in high-heels has blamed a slip of the foot for travelling at more than twice the limit in her mum's BMW. Police nabbed the 20-year-old doing 112km/h in a 50km/h zone in Melbourne, the Herald Sun reports. She was fined $500, lost her licence for 12 months and had to tell her mother her BMW coupe had been impounded for 48 hours under Victoria's anti-hoon laws.

It may not give you 'The Drive of Your Life', as its makers Peugeot may try to claim, but the latest micro electric car is creating huge excitement in the automotive industry.

The Peugeot BB1, a cross between a scooter and a car, is powered by two electric motors which are mounted in the rear wheels.

Inspired by Peugeot’s electric VLV from the 1940s, the new all-electric BB1 represents the car firm’s view for the future of electrical-based urban mobility.

At just 2.5m long, the bubble-shaped BB1 can amazingly seat four people in saddle-like seats and its packaging miracle is achieved by rethinking the driving task.

There are no pedals so the driver sits more upright with the rear passenger's legs around the driver's torso, motorbike pillion-style.

There is no room for a steering wheel either and the driver uses handlebars to control the mini vehicle, which is undoubtedly a real head-turner.

Fair Isles - they’re all the rage! Following my last post, I’m harbouring fair isle desires … seems that if you’re sporting a natty little fair isle tank top around town you can put a big tick in the vintage fashion box. Okay, time to confess, my fair isle technique is not the best in the world (resembles a plate of spaghetti on the reverse side and the pattern starts to look more Picasso cubist than Renoir, sigh) so I do have to work on it, but I’ve got the incentive now, I’m hooked.
