How does notification help in these cases?

If only these companies protected my information as if it were their own.

Most of us secure our data while on our own computer, but when our personal information is given to others we become vulnerable and subject to whatever level of seriousness corporations (and the government) extend to preventing a data breach.

U.S. corporations, governments and universities reported a record 516 consumer data breaches in the first nine months of this year, incidents prompted chiefly by hackers and employee theft, according to a report released today by a nonprofit group that works to prevent fraud.

The Identity Theft Resource Center, of San Diego, found that this year's data breach tally has easily eclipsed 2007's 446 incidents. At an average of 57 caches of consumer data reported lost or stolen each month, U.S. organizations are on track to divulge at least 680 breaches by the end of 2008.

About 80 percent of the breaches involved digital records, while the remainder stemmed from the loss, theft or exposure of paper-based records. A description of each incident is available in the Identity Theft Resource Center 's 2008 Breach List (PDF).

Some 30 million records on consumers have been exposed so far this year. But experts say that figure almost certainly masks a much larger problem

Trust relationships are created between Windows NT or Windows 2000
domains to allow users in one domain to access resources in other
domains without requiring them to authenticate separately to each
domain. When a user in a trusted domain requests access to a resource
in a trusting domain, the trusted domain supplies authorization data
in the form of a list of Security Identifiers (SIDs) that indicate
the user's identity and group memberships. The trusting domain uses
this data to determine whether to grant the user's request.

A: No. If Alaska returned to territorial status, most federal money would still be available. If Alaska were to attain complete independence, its revenues from oil and other natural resources would far exceed the amounts currently received from the federal government, at our current level of resource utilization.

Q: If Alaska were independent, what would happen to my social security check, federal pension, or military retirement?

A: People receive these checks around the world, regardless of their place of residence. In most cases eligibility for such checks would not be affected by Alaskan independence.

Q: Didn't we vote for statehood already?

A: The vote for statehood was invalid because the people were not presented with the range of options available to them. Further, the federal government has since breached the contract for statehood on numerous occasions in over a dozen serious and substantial instances.

Russia suspended trading after Moscow’s Micex index crashed 19pc in its biggest one-day drop since the 1998 default. The state-controlled VTB bank fell 25pc.

“Traders are just sitting there staring at the screens and going, 'Wow’,” said Ron Smith, a strategist at Alfa Bank.

Brazil shut the Sao Paulo exchange after the Bovespa index crashed 15pc in panic trading, led by flight from the resource giants Vale and Petroleo Brasileiro. Mexico’s Bolsa was off 7pc; India’s Sensex was off 6pc.

New research indicates that chili pepper plants may have developed their signature heat as a way to fight off fungal infections caused by insects. When insects bite into the flesh of a chili pepper, it provides an entry point for a microbial fungus known as Fusarium that can destroy the pepper plant's seeds. Capsaicinoid chemicals produced by the pepper plant inhibit the growth of the fungus -- and it's those chemical compounds that also give chili peppers their spicy kick. In a series of papers published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers examining biodiversity around the globe paint a gloomy picture for the planet's species. Warning signs include recent mass die-offs of amphibians and declining fisheries.

Over the course of the Earth's history, there have been at least five major extinction events -- the End Ordovician, Late Devonian, End Permian, End Triassic, and End Cretaceous.
