Karim Nader, an assistant professor of psychology at Montreal's McGill University who participated in the NYU rat research, believes there may be a human corollary to these animal studies and a potential opportunity to influence deeper, older memories when they are recalled, and then laid back down.

"It's likely that any effects are reversible, temporary," said Squire. "You may be able to bring up a memory, weaken it, but eventually the memory comes back. The effect is more like interference than real change."

"I simply do not believe the (NYU) research is valid," added McGaugh. "Human studies have shown no such effect. They show human memory doesn't work that way."

Masculinity beliefs impacting men's health

Men that are middle-aged and who strongly idealize masculinity are almost 50 percent less likely than other men to seek healthcare services, according to a study presented at the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association.

"This research strongly suggests that deep-seated masculinity beliefs are one core cause of men's poor health, in as much as they reduce compliance with recommended preventative health services," said Kristen W. Springer, the study's primary researcher.

The study also noted that education - despite its well-established beneficial effect on health behaviors - also was a moderating factor. Highly educated men with the strongest-held masculinity beliefs were just as unlikely to obtain preventative care as men with lower levels of education.

She concluded by emphasizing the need for more research using samples with greater diversity.

Sugar causes testosterone to plummet

Sugary foods can cause testosterone levels to drop by as much as 25 percent, regardless of whether a man has diabetes or normal glucose tolerance. The new findings mean that men with low testosterone should have their hormone levels retested after they fast overnight, as eating may transiently lower them, say the researchers.

Previous research showed that a high level of insulin, the hormone primarily secreted after eating, is related to low testosterone levels. Like eating, glucose intake causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise, which stimulates the secretion of insulin. In the new study, the researchers examined the impact of a standard dose of glucose on testosterone levels in 74 men.

"More research is needed to find the factor or factors responsible for this drop in testosterone,"

The first human genome map was completed by researchers in 2001 at an estimated cost of more than $100 million, according to a report published today in the journal Science. From August 2-21, 2009, a group of doctoral students and research volunteers from Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego embarked on an expedition aboard the Scripps research vessel New Horizon exploring the problem of plastic in the North Pacific Gyre

How much plastic is accumulating, how is it distributed, and how is it affecting ocean life? A new study in the United Kingdom has found that children whose parents take a "tough love" approach are better prepared to achieve in life.

The research by think tank Demos tracked the lives of 9,000 families over eight years.

The head of the research team, Sonia Sodha, says the tough love style of parenting combines warmth and discipline, and is far more important in a child's success than parents' income or social background.

"Parents are able to set rules, apply them consistently and fairly and that means that children know what the boundaries are to their behaviour," she said.

Ms Sodha says tough love parenting helps children to develop key skills such as emotion control and empathy.

"They are skills that we've termed character capabilities, and what I mean when I say that is skills like self-regulation, so being able to regulate your own emotions in difficult circumstances," she said.
