Rehabbing Superman's Cleveland House

Work is getting underway at the Superman House.

The Kimberley Avenue home on Cleveland's east side is where Jerry Seigel grew up. Seigel and Joe Shuster created Superman while students at Glenville High School.

Residents Jefferson and Hattie Gray sought $50,000 to repair the roof and repaint the exterior but raised about twice that amount, with help from the Siegel and Shuster Society and novelist Brad Meltzer.

The renovation work is being coordinated by the Glenville Development Corporation.

Rob Woodbridge, Bleick & Kessler Construction Co. reports the home will get an extensive exterior make over, that will take about 6 weeks to complete.

Woodbridge explains he has rehabbed a lot of historic homes on Cleveland's east side, but none as famous as this one. He read Superman comic books as a child, and now his kids are doing the same.

Woodbridge says he is constantly being asked by people passing by if this is the famed Superman House.

Residences, businesses recognized at WHNO annual event

The West Hill Neighborhood Organization (WHNO) will host its annual free-to-the-public meet-and-greet event Oct. 1 at 6:30 p.m. at the Highland Theater.

Those who attend can learn more about WHNO’s mission, programs and volunteer opportunities. There will be gifts for attendees and concessions and a bar provided by the theater.

The event also will include the presentation of the WHNO’s housing/community awards to local residents and businesses, including:

WHNO President Jane Startzman said the awards broadly cover the WHNO’s service area and range from individual homes to businesses that have worked to improve the West Hill/Highland Square community to neighborhood satellite groups of WHNO that have utilized Neighborhood Partnership Program funds to enhance their streets.

Such was the case with the new concrete planters established by the Dodge/Payne group, according to group member Holli Mallak.

Does Obama Really Want to Talk About Earmarks?

clipper's remarks: As Governor, Palin went on to veto $231 million worth of pork from the proposed state budget her first year in office. The next year, state legislators reinserted many of those same earmarks into the budget and asked the Governor to okay $58 billion to pay them. She vetoed them again.

The Democrats are also trying to blame Palin for all of Alaska's earmarks, but only U.S. senators and members of Congress are responsible for snagging their pork. And as U.S. Senator Obama requested more than $740 million for his pet-projects in the last three years, including a $1 million earmark for the hospital his wife was working at and a $750,000 earmark to pay for the renovation of a space center named after top Obama donor James S. Crown's grandfather, Henry Crown.

And since Obama is bringing it up, why doesn't he explain why he sought more than $3.4 million earmarks for his VP Joe Biden's lobbyist son, Hunter? I thought Obama detested lobbyists and those kind of cozy, Senate relationships.

If Barack Obama wants to rail against Sarah Palin's record on earmarks he'd better be prepared to defend why he allocated hundreds of millions of tax dollars for his own pet-projects.

Yes, Palin did indicate some support for a Ketchikan "link" (which could be a bridge or a ferry) while campaigning to become Governor. Her exact quote the Obama campaign is using against her is from a 2006 article in the Ketchikan Daily News. Palin is quoted saying:

"The money that's been appropriated for the project, it should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done. This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper."

"Link" is the operative word. That can mean bridge, ferry or anything else that gets people from one location to another.

Meanwhile, in the US Senate, Obama VOTED FOR the $400 million Bridge to Nowhere.

Kelly Blandford used to live in San Francisco. Ed Whitman spent 30 years in Miami. Blu Lewis was a Pittsburgh resident.

This year, fate has brought all three to apartment living in downtown Canton, an area newly vibrant with restaurants, art galleries and nightlife.

"I'm a very happy camper down here," Ed Whitman says about his new downtown pad on Sixth Street NW, across the street from St. John's Catholic Church.

"The apartment is wonderful. It's a very comfortable unit in a very comfortable building. The building is circa 1924, with unique historical touches. Apartments weren't all cookie-cutter back then," he says. "There's been outstanding renovation efforts by King Properties."

"Downtown Canton is a gem," he says. "I love all the historic buildings, the layout of the city and the preservation. It's very, very comfortable, and very, very creative. Just an overall really good vibe."

The compact fluorescent bulb use less mercury than incandescent bulbs running on electricity from coal, which releases mercury when burned.
The mercury from the CFL bulbs can be recovered.

Research led by Professor Robert Hurt of Brown University has created a product that absorbs mercury 70 times better than the best available technology.

The results were presented at a recent meeting of the American Chemical Society.

UPDATE: Indy area to snag 277 EnerDel jobs

EnerDel Inc.’s $100 million expansion, one of the biggest in the state this year, earmarks 277 of the 850 new positions for the Indianapolis area.

The lithium-ion battery company announced this morning that it will add 217 jobs to the 100 positions at its headquarters at 8740 Hague Road on the far northeast side of Indianapolis. The new Indianapolis jobs will involve research and cell production.

Sixty more jobs will be located at 15425 Herriman Boulevard in Noblesville, where a renovation is expected to begin soon. The Noblesville location, which has 31,000 square feet, will assemble battery packs.

The rest of the jobs, 478, will be based at a battery manufacturing plant to be located in Indiana. A site has not been secured, EnerDel CEO Ulrik Grape said.

EnerDel will need several hundred thousand square feet of existing space, but would prefer to build the plant, Grape said.

The company also is lining up suppliers, some of which are in Indiana

The ghost of Cuba-Russia relations past was raised last month by a news report that Russia might use Cuba as a refueling base for its nuclear-capable bombers. The Russian Defense Ministry later denied the report.

The security council, which guides Russian national security policy, said in a following statement the two countries planned "consistent work to restore traditional relations in all areas of cooperation."

But analysts said Russia was a lot more likely to get increased trade with Cuba than it was military cooperation.

"It's impossible to imagine that anyone in the Cuban leadership would want to put their country in the bull's eye of another superpower showdown reminiscent of the missile crisis," said Brian Latell, a former CIA analyst

"The military talk seems to be bluster on Moscow's part," Peters said. "Cuba has nothing to gain from a military relationship, which would be high-risk and out of character with the steady renovation of diplomatic relationships" under Raul Castro.

Two elderly women who applied five times to demonstrate in China’s Olympic protest parks against the demolition of their homes have been ordered to serve one year of re-education through labour, a human rights group said.

Wu Dianyuan, 79, and Wang Xiuying, 77, have been petitioning the government ever since they were forcibly evicted from their homes in Beijing in 2001 as part of a series of huge renovation projects across the city.

The pair applied five times between August 5 and August 18 to the Beijing city Public Security Bureau for permission to demonstrate in the newly designated protest parks. The two women, formerly neighbours, wanted to protest against their forced eviction from their homes seven years ago. Their application was neither granted nor denied and on August 5 they were held for 10 hours for questioning by the police, the son of one of the women told Human Rights in China.

Amid Ruined New Orleans Neighborhoods, a Gadfly Buzzes

NEW ORLEANS — The citizens of this scarred city have grown accustomed to promises of grand official projects that will infallibly transform life here but somehow never do. Their attention is diminishing.

But not in the case of Karen Gadbois. She jumps in her car and checks up on the promises, driving for hours across the city, then blogs about the results on her kitchen table while her dogs yap around her. A few months ago, she discovered a city renovation program that was not actually fixing up houses.

That activism might normally go down as well-meaning naïveté. Here though, it can be incendiary, in a place where big public funds slosh around, citizen needs are still great at Hurricane Katrina’s three-year anniversary and City Hall’s grasp of its own initiatives is shaky.

In fact, it has set off a bomb that has exploded in slow motion here in the past three weeks, largely thanks to Ms. Gadbois:
