Handling Forgiving and Forgetting

What is forgiving and forgetting in a relationship?

1. Forgiving is allowing another person to be human for faults, mistakes, or misdeeds. Forgetting is putting these behind you; they are no longer brought up and no longer remain a barrier to your relationship.

2. Forgiving is letting another know that there is no grudge, hard feelings, or animosity for any wrongdoing. Forgetting is the lack of further discussion, with no ongoing negative references to the event.

3. Forgiving is letting the other person know that you accept as genuine the remorse and sorrow for actions or words that hurt or disappointed you. Forgetting is promising that this deed, whether of omission or commission, will not be brought up again.

4. Forgiving is accepting the sincerity of penance, sorrow, and regret expressed over a grievous personal offense; making it sufficient to clear the air. Forgetting is your commitment to let go of anger, hurt, and pain over this offense.

clipper's remarks: If McCain wants to bash Obama for his occasional appearances on the same board with Ayers, a 1970's political activist who Obama disclaims friendship with, then he needs to examine his admitted long-time friendship to a government operative who was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history - and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law, G. Gordon Liddy.

Both Ayers and Liddy say they have no regrets for what they did. Both served prison terms for their actions.

Liddy, a radio talk show host, gives the advice: "if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot, they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. Kill the sons of bitches."

Ayers, since imprisonment, has spent his time helping the poor and disadvantaged.

McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

Can a presidential candidate justify a long and friendly relationship with someone who, back in the 1970s, extolled violence and committed crimes in the name of a radical ideology -- and who has never shown remorse or admitted error? When the candidate in question is Barack Obama, John McCain says no. But when the candidate in question is John McCain, he's not so sure.

Obama has been justly criticized for his ties to former Weather Underground member Bill Ayers, who in 1995 hosted a campaign event for Obama and in 2001 gave him a $200 contribution.

McCain minced no words: "I think not only a repudiation but an apology for ever having anything to do with an unrepentant terrorist is due the American people."

What McCain didn't mention is that he has his own Bill Ayers -- in the form of G. Gordon Liddy.

Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him.

How close are McCain and Liddy? At least as close as Obama and Ayers appear to be

WASHINGTON - Prosecutors will seek life without parole Friday for a man who broke into a 77-year-old woman's home, sexually assaulted her, strangled her and stabbed her, leaving a knife protruding from her chest.

A D.C. Superior Court jury last spring found Robert Pettus, 22, guilty of the Sept. 4, 2004, killing of Martha Elizabeth Byrd in her Hilltop Terrace home. Pettus was Byrd's next door neighbor.

On her nude body he left a note that said: "You souldins {sic} Have cheated on me." A day later Pettus was driving around in the victim's Cadillac Deville.

In a memo on sentencing, prosecutors say Pettus "has not accepted responsibility for his crimes, consistently makes excuses for his behavior, has shown no remorse."

The McCain campaign is desperate - absolutely desperate - to buy time for next week’s Vice-Presidential debate. McCain isn’t afraid to debate tonight, but he and his team are in full crisis mode over Palin. You may have seen her recently getting destroyed by Katie Couric. Let me clarify: getting intellectually dismantled by Katie Couric is not a good sign.

They chose Palin with very little forethought because she fit the bill (female, young, pro-life) and they assumed that whatever skills she lacked as a candidate could be fixed. All employers do this - hire ‘em and train ‘em as you go. But now it is hitting them: she is far, far worse than they expected. Everything they’re doing screams “buyer’s remorse.”

I asked yesterday, whom I complain to if Obama loses. My first group to ask would be the media. Let’s face it, you are citizens too and you each have one vote. You too would suffer under a McGrouch-Palin administration. You too would be part of the great American decline. You too would suffer through many mistakes. You would not just be reporting, commenting or pontificating all of this, you would be suffering just like your fellow citizens.

So why are you so weak and intimidated? Why do you puff your chest out with righteous indignation? Why do you succumb to lies, deceit and pandering? Don’t you wish to see a better America? Will you feel any remorse when we are in the toilet? Are you so pompous and conceited that you could care less what happens? Don’t you see that you have become elitist Republican ‘ownership’ minions? Will you too say to the rest of us who suffer, “you’re on your own?”

Well, we have a saying for you media. Maybe you heard it before. “Have you no shame?”

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) -- A woman was sentenced Monday to life in prison without the chance for parole for burning her baby daughter to death in a microwave after fighting with her boyfriend.

Arnold was convicted Aug. 29 of aggravated murder in the death of month-old Paris Talley in 2005. Prosecutors said she intentionally put her baby in the microwave after a fight with her boyfriend. The couple had argued over whether the boyfriend was the biological father.

Rion said Arnold loved her baby "with all of her heart and more" and regrets drinking the night of her baby's death to the point of not remembering what happened.

Prosecutor David Franceschelli told Wiseman that Arnold has shown no genuine remorse.

"The only remorse here is she got caught," Franceschelli said.

Bombed UCSC researcher fears for family's safety

A University of California-Santa Cruz biologist whose home was firebombed this weekend feared for his family's future on Sunday while a spokesman for a radical animal rights group said the attacks were the consequences for performing research on animals.

While a spokesman said he didn't know who was responsible, the Woodland Hills-based Animal Liberation Front called the attacks "necessary," similar to the fight against civil rights injustices. Spokesman Dr. Jerry Vlasak showed no remorse for the family or children whose home was targeted.

The Santa Cruz Police Department said it was "unconscionable" for anyone to defend such acts.

'Lack of remorse' lands teen in jail for rape

SEATTLE -- A teenager faces more time than usual in juvenile detention for his attitude after pleading guilty to involvement in the rape of a 16-year-old girl with three other teenagers.

King County Juvenile Court Judge Michael Hayden sentenced the 17-year-old from Federal Way to more than three years for his "utter lack of remorse."

After the girl reported the rape in November, police arrested the 17-year-old and three other teens after finding postings about the episode on the online networking site MySpace.com.

In court, Hayden noted that a pre-sentence report quoted the 17-year-old as calling the girl a liar.

Hayden also revealed the girl, 16 at the time of the rape, became pregnant and later had an abortion.

According to investigators, the four teenagers got the girl drunk, took turns raping her in the back of a car, then later talked about killing the girl to prevent her from testifying against them.

Will the real Obama please stand?

The headline in The Washington Post was intriguing: "Obama's Ideology Proving Difficult to Pinpoint." The article turned out to be a charitable discussion of whether the Democratic nominee is moving away from leftist positions he took during the primaries and toward the political center for the general election.

Once upon a time, I thought I did. Obama was the graceful rookie from Illinois who came out of nowhere to become the rock star of '08. His biracial heritage, Harvard Law School education and vast ambition created the perfect image of a post-racial, post-ideological agent of change. He would not be tied to the old ideas or the old ways of doing things.

That's where Obama has failed. In his rush to appeal to moderate voters, Obama has demolished his narrative. Political expediency is ordinary, and by embracing it, he has proven himself an eloquent but ordinary politician.

Put another way, what does he believe in?

Damned if I know.
