Cambodian couple saw house in half in divorce

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia - A couple in rural Cambodia has terminated their 18-year marriage with a divorce settlement that entailed sawing in two the wooden house they once shared, villagers said Friday. The husband, 42-year-old Moeun Sarim, has taken away with him all the bits and pieces of his half a house, said his 35-year-old wife, Vat Navy.

"He brought his relatives and used saws to cut the house in half," she said, adding that she now owns the other half that is still standing. The house is made from wood with a tile roof and propped up on wooden pillars, a typical style for a Cambodian country home.

She said her estranged husband and his relatives, after ripping apart half of the house, carried all the debris to his parents' house nearby.

She said the divorce was prompted by her husband's jealousy about her alleged relationship with a policeman in the village. She denied having an extramarital affair.

The rest of us get out of their way, cowering in fear. The bully's bosses have fallen for her or his ingratiation (butt kissing) tactics over the years and support the bully when exposed. And they will continue until we slap them down and say "enough is enough!" This will have to be done by a compassionate, unified and courageous groups of co-workers, enlightened employers who finally realize just how expensive is the care and feeding of bullies, or society that passes laws to declare its unacceptability.

So the McCain camp is trying to raise doubts about Barack Obama -- even though the Illinois senator has been on the national stage for four years and has been under the presidential campaign microscope for the last 20 months. They seem to have no qualms appealing to the cultural fears of their agitated, and now energized, base by practically branding Obama as un-American or anti-American. And this is eliciting an ugliness at McCain-Palin events that is justifiably raising alarms that some nut job is going to act on the Republican ticket's cynical campaigning.

For two days now, there have been stories about boisterous McCain-Palin supporters screaming inflammatory words at the very mention of Obama's name. Words like "terrorist" and "Kill him!" and "treason." And at no point has McCain or Palin called on those folks and others who would imitate them to stop.

If they keep doing what they're doing, they'll deserve to lose.

Gregory Meeks complained to the New York Observer: “They are trying to throw out these codes.” In the same piece, Democratic Rep. Yvette Clark divined segregationist intent in Palin’s references to Joe Six-Pack and hockey moms. “It leaves a lot of people out.”
And Democratic Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid echoed Time’s Tumulty on the McCain camp’s Obama/Raines broadsides: “The only connection that people could bring up about Raines and Barack Obama is that they both are African-American, other than that there is nothing.”

McCain hammers away at Obama's Ayers connection

John McCain yesterday ramped up his attempts to tar Barack Obama for his association with William Ayers, who along with his wife led a radical group that bombed government buildings in the early 1970s.

Urged by supporters at a Wisconsin town hall meeting yesterday to get tougher on Obama, McCain referred to Ayers for the first time. "We need to know the full extent of the relationship" to judge "whether Senator Obama is telling the truth to the American people or not," he said.

In an interview aired last night on ABC News, McCain added: "I don't care about two washed-up old terrorists that are unrepentant about trying to destroy America. But I do care, and Americans should care, about [Obama's] relationship with him and whether he's being truthful and candid about it."

McCain's campaign also put up a hard-hitting Web ad that calls Ayers a "terrorist," describes him as a friend of Obama's, and insinuates that Obama is hiding the truth.

Griffin also tells a somewhat nonplussed Cooper that Obama has lied about his “coming out party” at the home of William Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn in 1995. Obama has said that Alice Palmer arranged the fundraiser and the venue, but Griffin spoke to two people who attended the event, who claim Obama lied. Palmer had nothing to do with that event outside of being invited to it. Obama and Ayers planned the event themselves.

Obama has lied repeatedly about his relationship with the unrepentant domestic terrorist. He spent years working for Ayers, promoting Ayers’ causes. Even CNN won’t buy the Obama line any longer. Expect John McCain to raise this point tonight in the debate.

There is a mythology in our culture that love just happens. As a result, the depressed often sit around passively waiting for someone to love them. But love doesn't work that way. To get love and keep love you have to go out and be active and learn a variety of specific skills.

There are always core differences between two people, no matter how good or close you are, and if the relationship is going right those differences surface. The issue then is to identify the differences and negotiate them so that they don't distance you or kill the relationship.
