Scientifically speaking, where is the best place on the Moon to set up a colony for research? Hands down, it has to be the Moon's south pole. Mountainous areas near the rim of Shackelton Crater provide areas of almost continual sunlight, meaning solar power would be constantly available. In addition, the shadowed craters are in constant darkness and may hold water ice, a potential water supply that would be a vital resource for any lunar base. Plus it would be a great place to set up a lunar telescope. Triadic imagery

In The White Goddess, Graves said:

the New Moon is the white goddess of birth and growth;

the Full Moon, the red goddess of love and battle;

the Old Moon, the black goddess of death and divination.

This relates the three life-thresholds of birth, procreation and death with phases of the moon. The term "new moon" is used by Graves in its original sense, as the first visible crescent after the luni-solar conjunction (which has traditionally been used as the starting point of lunar calendars), rather than the luni-solar conjunction itself.

An Alien View of the Moon Transiting Earth

Ever wonder what an approaching alien spacecraft would see as it comes within tracking range of our Earth/Moon system? NASA's EXPOXI mission, which uses the old Deep Impact spacecraft, has created a video of the moon transiting (passing in front of) Earth as seen from the spacecraft's point of view 50 million kilometers (31 million miles) away. Scientists are using the video to develop techniques to study alien worlds

two versions of the video; the first one uses a red-green-blue filter, showing how it looks with our human eyes, and the second uses an infrared-green-blue, which makes the vegetation on the land masses show up in red.

Within hours of the story's publication, the Internet and blogosphere erupted in wild debate over the small red rock with magnetic properties, engraved with what appears to be moon phases, a supernova and an eclipse.

"I'm not a geologist," he said. "The rock is surely strange looking, but when someone showed me a picture of crop circles in Europe exactly like the design on the rock, I believe that someone may have created the image, for whatever reason."

Their statement concluded: "What's interesting about this artifact is the magnetic polarity. The top side with the design will spin a compass needle, but it does not do that on the underneath side. The compass needle just moves back and forth, and will not spin. So the design itself is creating a magnetic polarity."

Planets Align for the 4th of July

July 1, 2008: News Flash: On 4th of July weekend, NASA forecasts lights in the sky.

No, not those lights. Look beyond the fireworks. Almost halfway up the western sky, just above the twilight glow of sunset, a trio of worlds is gathering: Saturn, Mars and the crescent Moon.

The show gets going on Friday, July 4th. Red Mars and ringed Saturn converge just to the left of the bright star Regulus. The three lights make a pretty 1st-magnitude line in the heavens: sky map.

But that is just the beginning. On Saturday, July 5th, with weekend fireworks at fever pitch, a lovely crescent Moon joins the show. Saturn, Mars, and the Moon trace an even brighter line than the night before: sky map.

Scan a small telescope along the line. You'll see Saturn's rings, the little red disk of Mars, a grand sweep of lunar mountains and craters, and just maybe—flash!—a manmade incendiary. How often do you see fireworks through a telescope?

Now that's spectacular—no fireworks required.

Things Get Wild in Western Sky as Mars, Saturn, Regulus Party

The wild part starts Tuesday, when Mars, Saturn and the star Regulus-- part of the constellation Leo-- loiter together, with Mars and Regulus tightly grouped. On subsequent nights, sky gazers will observe that Mars moves toward Saturn. A new moon joins the trio on the evenings of July 5 and 6.

The following week, look west. Saturn (zero magnitude, bright enough to see in urban skies) and Mars conjunct July 10 above the western horizon. You can spot them after dusk. The ringed planet is the brighter of the two, and Mars (first magnitude) has the rusty, red tint.

The Google Lunar X Prize

The year is 2012. A quarter-million miles from Earth, a small spacecraft is nearing the surface of the moon. When the unmanned craft touches down in a cloud of rocket-blown dust, it becomes the first man-made object to arrive intact on the lunar surface in 32 years.

But the logo on the side of the spacecraft doesn't belong to NASA or any other government space agency. Instead, the images beamed back to Earth by the small rover that emerges from the spacecraft reveal a familiar multicolored corporate logo: Google's. Not a single dollar of public money has been expended, or a scrap of governmental red tape encountered, during the mission.

To win the prize, the rover must do more than arrive in one piece. It must travel at least 500 meters, or about a third of a mile, and send a "mooncast" of high-definition video, photos and text to Earth.
