Dollhouse was cancelled by FOX this week after failing to draw in competitive ratings for the show’s second season, but Whedon fans continue to believe in his talent despite his seemingly cursed track record of cancelled series.

So the 13-year veteran - her smarts already proved as a Mensa member - took the Pennsylvania State Police's promotions exam, scoring sixth out of 2,000 test-takers.

But, despite her scores and an unblemished disciplinary record, her bosses passed her over for promotion. Male co-workers joked about her sex life. Colleagues accused her of cheating on the exam. Superiors suspended her, stripped her of her badge and gun, transferred her and tried to fire her.

The asteroid named 2009 DD45 was about 48,800 miles from Earth. That is just twice the height of some telecommunications satellites and about a fifth of the distance to the Moon.

Asteroid passes just 8,700miles from Earth - with only 15 hours warning

Although no one noticed at the time, the Earth was almost hit by an asteroid last Friday.

The previously undiscovered asteroid came within 8,700miles of Earth but astronomers noticed it only 15 hours before it made its closest approach.

Its orbit brought it 30 times nearer than the Moon, which is 250,000 miles away.

Astronomers believe the object, called 2009 VA, would have almost completely burned up while entering Earth's atmosphere, causing a brilliant fireball in the sky but no major damage to the surface.

The asteroid was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on November 6, 2009. It was then identified by the Minor Planet Centre in Cambridge, Massachusetts as a near Earth object.

It was the third-closest known (non-impacting) Earth approach on record for a cataloged asteroid.

It was the third-closest known (non-impacting) Earth approach on record for a cataloged asteroid.

They monitored a 100ft asteroid that whizzed 45,000 miles above the Earth's surface on March 2 this year. A similar sized object slammed into Tunguska, Siberia in 1908. The impact created a blast so powerful it levelled 1,200 square miles of forest.

State to 'spy' on every phone call, email and web search

Every phone call, text message, email and website visit made by private citizens is to be stored for a year and will be available for monitoring by government bodies.

All telecoms companies and internet service providers will be required by law to keep a record of every customer’s personal communications, showing who they have contacted, when and where, as well as the websites they have visited.

Despite widespread opposition to the increasing amount of surveillance in Britain, 653 public bodies will be given access to the information, including police, local councils, the Financial Services Authority, the ambulance service, fire authorities and even prison governors.

They will not require the permission of a judge or a magistrate to obtain the information, but simply the authorisation of a senior police officer or the equivalent of a deputy head of department at a local authority.

The warning, which coincided with news that the biggest devaluation in the pound since the 1930s has failed to stem the rising trade deficit, is the latest blow for the UK's economic credibility.

David Riley, Fitch's co-head of global sovereign ratings, said that record levels of Government debt meant that unless the next Government makes serious efforts to bring spending under control and reduce that debt, Britain could lose its AAA rating.

In spite of the fall in sterling, the trade deficit widened in September to the biggest level since January, increasing from £6.1bn to £7.2bn, according to the Office for National Statistics. The increase was partly due to a rise in car imports, as the scrappage scheme encouraged households to spend and pushed car imports up by 30pc

"If there was another significant fiscal stimulus package in the UK, then UK rating would be at risk."

although exports rose by 3.9pc, imports increased by 7.5pc.

Asteroid almost smacks into the Earth

YOU almost certainly missed it - and luckily it missed you - but an asteroid has come within 8,700 miles of hitting the Earth.

Astronomers spotted the object only 15 hours before its closest approach to our planet last Friday.

It followed an asteroid which exploded over Indonesia with the force of three Hiroshima nuclear bombs two weeks ago.

Don't panic! Although the asteroid passed within 14,484 kilometres (9,000 miles) of Earth it measured just (7 metres) 23ft across and wouldn't have dented the surface.

Even had it been on collision course with us, the 7 ,etre (23ft wide) asteroid - known as 2009 VA - is unlikely to have made much of an impact because it would probably have all but burnt up in the atmosphere.

It was the third-closest approach on record for any asteroid that has failed to make it through our atmosphere.

While about 40 per cent of hydrocarbons in today's dust come from water-dependent plants, this rose to 60 per cent, first between 120,000 and 110,000 ago and again from 50,000 to 45,000 years ago. So the region seemed to be in the grip of unusually wet spells at the time.

That may have been enough to allow sub-Saharan Stone Age Homo sapiens to migrate north: the first fossils of modern humans outside Africa date from 93,000 year ago in Israel. And both genetic analysis and archaeology show that humans didn't spread extensively beyond Africa until 50,000 years ago, suggesting a second migration at the time of the second wet spell.

Wet spells in the Sahara may have opened the door for early human migration. According to new evidence, water-dependent trees and shrubs grew there between 120,000 and 45,000 years ago. This suggests that changes in the weather helped early humans cross the desert on their way out of Africa.

The Sahara would have been a formidable barrier during the Stone Age, making it hard to understand how humans made it to Europe from eastern Africa, where the earliest remains of our hominin ancestors are found.

Isla Castañeda of the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research and colleagues studied land plant hydrocarbons in Saharan dust that has settled on the sea floor off west Africa over the past 192,000 years. From the ratio of carbon isotopes in the hydrocarbons they can work out which types of plants were present at different times.
