I have spent most of the past 15 years in the dark side of the rising sun. Until three years ago, I was a crime reporter for the Yomiuri Shimbun, Japan's largest newspaper, and covered a roster of characters that included serial killers who doubled as pet breeders, child pornographers who abducted junior high-school girls, and the John Gotti of Japan.

Most Americans think of Japan as a law-abiding and peaceful place, as well as our staunch ally, but reporting on the underworld gave me a different perspective. Mobs are legal entities here. Their fan magazines and comic books are sold in convenience stores, and bosses socialize with prime ministers and politicians. And as far as the United States is concerned, Japan may be refueling U.S. warships at sea, but it's not helping us fight our own battles against organized crime -- a realization that led to my biggest scoop.

Carl Jung was a student and follower of Freud. He was born in a small town in Switzerland in 1875 and all his life was fascinated by folk tales, myths and religious stories. Although he had a close friendship with Freud early in their relationship, his independent and questioning mind soon caused a break.

Jung did not accept Freud’s contention that the primary motivation behind behavior was sexual urges. Instead of Freud’s instinctual drives of sex and aggression, Jung believed that people are motivated by a more general psychological energy that pushes them to achieve psychological growth, self-realization., psychic wholeness and harmony.

What are your thoughts on this an evolutionary theory?

Am I imagining that at one time two such people, brought to campus by such a group, would have been treated as a shameful matter? That perhaps a paper like The JEWISH Advocate would have provided the context for readers to understand this, rather than giving them a straight-up second page bit of publicity? Is shame dead? Are we supposed to admire these girls for standing up for the wrong values and spreading lies? Or have we no values any longer? Can we no longer call a lie for what it is?

A second page story about the two Israeli traitors who are touring the country making a living on undermining Israeli democracy abroad: Israeli women war resisters to speak at Brandeis (requires subscription -- and, yeah, don't get me started on Brandeis)

Maya Wind and Netta Mishly went to jail rather than serve in the Israeli Defense Forces. They will explain why Oct. 5 when they visit Brandeis University as part of a nationwide tour of college campuses.

Wind, a Jerusalem native, spent 40 days in military prison and Mishly, a Tel Aviv native, spent 20 days in jail.

"At first, like many other Israeli citizens, I too could not bring myself to confront or criticize the Israeli military's immoral actions," said Wind in a statement before going to jail. "I realize that this difficulty originated from my sense of identification with soldiers my own age. ...

Like you, when I read that a cabal of art-hating reactionary philistines had forced the resignation of Yosi Sergant from the National Endowment for the Arts, I was sickened. This was followed by shame, then fear. And then, finally, the realization that here was a golden opportunity for cheap blog traffic.

We in the Arts community must confront these vulgarian bullies and let them know that ART WILL NOT BE SILENCED. To show my personal commitment to this important cause, last night I dug deep into my kid's sock drawer and found $33.18, which I am now fully dedicating to an endowment to fund creative art aimed at promoting me and my agenda.

Like the NEA, I'm not picky about what constitutes art. Use your creativity! Paintings, poetry, outhouse graffiti, sea shanties, macaroni arrangements, mime, interpretive dance, drum circles, chanting choirs of third graders, it's all cool. The only guideline is that your art must promote unswerving blind allegiance to me, and all that I represent.

Suppression of emotions is a conscious denial of feelings (repression is an unconscious denial). Those who are constantly suppressing their emotions ignore their feelings and choose not to deal with them. Suppression is an unhealthy response to your emotions and thoughts.

The study and theory of thought suppression has grown into a significant area of scientific inquiry. What has compelled the interest of the scientific community is the realization that “suppression is not simply an ineffective tactic of mental control; it is counterproductive, helping assure the very mental state one had hoped to avoid” (Wenzlaff & Wegner, 2000)

When we suppress an emotion, the energy of that emotion does not go away. Instead, it subsides — it sinks deeper.

4) Honestly, this case just makes me so sad. I think it's highly likely that something bad happened that night, whether or not she literally consented. It's hard to imagine something like this happening if all the parties had engaged in direct sexual communication and sought enthusiastic, affirmative consent - not just lack of protest. For me, this whole mess just demonstrates how badly we need a real sea-change in how we talk about and view sex in our culture.

Here's where a conclusion should go, but this column has none. Because this case has none. And this crisis has none. At least none so far. But we're working on it. Right?

You've probably heard that a woman at Hofstra University accused a group of men of raping her, and then, a few days later, recanted her accusation.

I hardly want to draw more attention to the story, but so much bile has been spilled and there are a few things that need to be said. Four, to be precise:

1) Anything that exists gets lied about sometimes.

of rapes that are reported to the police, somewhere between 2-8% turn out to be false or are recanted.

2) Did you notice how I just said "turn out to be false or are recanted"? Let's not confuse the two.

lots of victims recant not because they made it up, but because they come to the unfortunate realization that it will cost them more, emotionally, to pursue justice than to let it go

3) Why is this an international story

when somewhere between 150,000 and 300,000 young women will be actually raped on college campuses this year? Why

insist on broadcasting the rare instance of a false or recanted accusation

ignoring the actual public health crisis
