Very late in the presidential campaign, staffers for Sen. John McCain came to the painful realization that it would be impossible, ever, to get Sarah Palin up to speed, reports Vanity Fair. They discovered, too late, she was a truth-shifting, self-regarding "little shop of horrors" who knew little about issues, and stubbornly refused to take direction, writes national editor Todd S. Purdum.

Still, a big-time GOP future remains possible for a woman who has a canny knowledge of how to manipulate connections and mercilessly punish perceived enemies. The woman known in high school as "the barracuda" has the "good fortune to have traction within a political party bereft of strong leadership, and whose rank-and-file often demands qualities other than knowledge and experience," writes Purdum. "It is, at the moment, a party in which the loudest voices, not burdened by responsibility, wield disproportionate power."

With each passing day, various Democrats, members of the media, and even certain Republicans, declare the conservative movement or the heyday of the Reagan era a relic of the past. Really? Well, in the age of Obama, a recent Gallup poll shows exactly the opposite. The survey says that 40 percent of Americans now describe their political views as “conservative,” with 35 percent saying “moderate” and 21 percent saying “liberal.”

As our debt rises to unimagined numbers, unemployment grows beyond the most pessimistic predictions, companies are nationalized, CEOs are fired by the White House, and wages are dictated by administration officials, there is a palpable fear spreading across the United States.

For a left-leaning media, they want to squash conservative principles in service to a President who more readily embraces the teachings of Venezuelan Strongman Hugo Chavez than John F. Kennedy.

as this poll demonstrates, along with that fear, is a growing realization that convictions matter

Her nomination is nothing more than an attempt to “diversify” the Supreme Court. The major factor in her nomination wasn’t her greatness, it was her race.

Because I am fully aware of the proper role of the Supreme Court and the function Justices are supposed to serve, I am convinced Sotomayor is not the best and/or right person for the job.

clipper's remarks: Most of us bitch about taxes and pay little attention to the fact that our nation is deeply mired in two wars. We refer to our military personnel as heroes (for fear of not seeming patriotic?) but want nothing to do with the consequences of those wars.

I agree with the author on some points and not on others. He speaks a realization that few of us want to face, for instance: the lie that we fight the terrorists there so we don’t have to fight them here.

I also agree with this statement: we Americans have been living off the rest of the world's misery. We are stealing oil from the people of nations like Iraq and Nigeria. We know our toys, our electronic devices and our fancy name-brand running shoes are being made by people who cannot afford to buy them themselves. We know that for decades we have been overthrowing elected governments and propping up fascist dictatorships to keep the exploitation going so that we can buy cheap goods and extract cheap resources.

been a time when America was a land of at least some brave people.

a nation that celebrates as heroic a history

of people with modern guns and cannons conquering and destroying another people

living in the stone age and fighting back with bows and arrows,

that built its economy on the backs of men and women held in chains certainly has a tough case to make

What is clear though is that there is nothing brave about modern-day America.

we have degenerated into a nation that finds glory in deploying the most advanced high-tech, high-explosive weaponry against some of the world's poorest people

that justifies killing women and children, even by the dozens, if by doing so it manages to kill one alleged "enemy" fighter

The Marines who battled their way up the hillsides of Iwo Jima, or the soldiers who struggled ashore under withering fire on the beaches of Normandy would be appalled at what passes for heroic behavior in today's American military. But that's not the worst of it.

Sgt. Jason A. Schumann was killed May 19, 2007 when a bomb exploded near his vehicle in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq. He is bured at Fort Snelling cemetery, where his headstone is marked with a pentacle. Sgt. Schumann was a Pagan.

The right for Pagans soldiers and veterans to have the pentacle inscribed on their headstones and memorials was one fought for very hard by Pagan communities throughout the country over the course of several years.

It was an example of such blatant religious discrimination on the VA's part that, notably, Pagans fighting for the pentacle on soldier's grave markers were also roundly supported by non-Pagans in their effort.

This issue also brought with it a realization in the community of how American Paganisms, and the people who practice it, are shifting demographically.

celebrating a hard-won right also brings with it the acknowledgment of the growing number of Pagan military folks and the sacrifices that they are making in order for this and other rights to be upheld.

Writing in the 1840’s, Kierkegaard had already defined the psychology of the personality long before the the 20th century.

In Sickness unto Death, Kierkegaard describes the depressed and the schizophrenic as the two extremes of personality (of course, not using those terms). The touchstone of his insight is not so much dysfunctional behaviors as the existential response of individuals to the realization of finitude, of death and decay.

Kiekegaard sees depression as a philosophical notion as much as psychological, wherein the person sees no solution to death, finitude, the inexorable dissolution of meaning and purpose. These are fundamental observations of what would become existentialism.

On the other end of the spectrum

There is “too much possibility,”

too many visions of and too many calls from what is hidden or manifest below the surface

Yet this universe overwhelms their resources. The self is shattered to the core of identity. This is a classical description of schizophrenia.

The Boston show is full of groupings that allow you to compare how all three artists handled similar subjects. At various times each of them produced a version of The Supper at Emmaus, the story from the New Testament in which the Risen Christ reveals himself to a pair of astonished disciples. Titian's came first, in 1533-34, a picture of masterly calm and balance that borrows the stabilizing horizontal format of Leonardo's Last Supper. At the realization that his table mate is Christ, the disciple at left draws back, but gently. The one at right, who rises slightly from his chair, is probably a portrait of the patron who commissioned the painting, Count Nicola Maffei of Mantua.
