And being able to pan and zoom the satellite images quickly makes it much easier to spot archaeological features and relate them to each other.

Clip Source: www.economist.com

INDIANA JONES, it is fair to say, would not approve. A small band of archaeologists are using Google Earth to make discoveries without getting their hands dirty. Although archaeologists have used satellite imagery for decades, the technique remained out of reach of most researchers because of the prohibitive costs and specialist skills needed to rectify distortions in raw satellite images caused by the angle of capture. But Google Earth, a free program that can be downloaded from the internet giant’s website, makes high-quality satellite images of much of the world’s surface available to anyone with a broadband connection. Archaeologists are now embracing the technology.

Tags: archaeology, google earth, technology, satellite maps, science

<clipSource>http://www.economist.com/science/tq/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11999379&fsrc=rss</clipSource>

Greenwald: The Republicans' Cheerful Viciousness

clipped by: masbury
clipper's remarks: Rendering issues irrelevant and converting campaigns into culture wars (h/t ratilfar!)

Clip Source: www.salon.com

With last night's cheerfully vicious speeches from Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin, the Republicans did what they always do in order to win elections: they exploited raw cultural divides while mocking, belittling and demonizing Democratic leaders.

Ever since Ronald Reagan's election, this is what the Republicans do every four years. The survey pretty much dynamites Office of National Drug Control Policy chief John Walters' claims of success in reducing marijuana and drug use during his tenure, which he'd like us to attribute to his aggressive policies, and particularly ONDCP's near-obsession with demonizing marijuana.

First, some raw numbers: The total number of Americans who have used illicit drugs is up from 108 million in 2002, the first full year of Walters' tenure, to 114 million in 2007. And the number of Americans who've used marijuana has passed the 100 million mark for the first time -- up from 95 million in 2002.

huffing and puffing about marijuana

number of Americans starting marijuana

has not budged during his tenure.

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/drugreporter/97606/new_drug_survey_demolishes_drug_czar%27s_claims/</clipSource>

And the Beast Shall Eat Itself

clipped by: merrie
clipper's remarks: A hot microphone, a revelation of dishonesty, and the violation of a long-held gentleman's agreement destroyed the credibility of the Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan today, and may have changed the complexion of the American news media forever.

Noonan revealed herself a hypocrite, and MSNBC, a network that has abandoned all illusions of objective journalism in favor of naked advocacy for Barack Obama and an exclusive allegiance to partisan politics of the far left wing of the Democratic Party, shattered a common courtesy between journalists, in order to tear another journalist down for a minor temporary gain.

All bets are off now, all gentleman's agreements dead.

Clip Source: confederateyankee.mu.nu

Noonan published an article just this morning labeling Sarah Palin as "a real and present danger to the American left, and to the Obama candidacy."

This same afternoon on MSNBC after a segment with NBC's Chuck Todd, Republican consultant Mike Murphy and Noonan were captured on still-live microphones ridiculing McCain's running mate.

With that leak, Noonan's credibility as a columnist was severely damaged if not destroyed, a fact she seems to realize even as she becomes the first casualty as a long held gentleman's agreement among journalists to overlook each others biases, faults, mistakes and lies has been ripped apart. Drinking coffee used to be so simple, just some beans and hot water, now there seem to be a very heavy reliance on coffee machines. There is the single serve, the vacuum, the semi-auto, the auto and even the super automatic espresso machines just to make that cup of cappuccino! And the technology that goes into it is amazing, now a Bunn can even tell you the weather as you enjoy that cuppa!

Note the pot on his left, saw a "sock" in it?

As a serious coffee drinker, always remember this:

-raw green coffee beans can retain their freshness for years

-Roasted coffee beans begin to lose their flavor after a week

-Ground coffee begins to lose its flavor within an hour after it is ground

-Brewed coffee begins to lose its flavor within minutes

So, in the Gourmet section, you would see machines that really goes the extra mile just to give you that aromatic and delightful start to your morning.

<clipSource>http://www.oncoffeemakers.com/index.html</clipSource>

A modern day led Zeppelin

clipped by: skwirlinator

Clip Source: hardrockhideout.wordpress.com

New Steelheart Album Good 2B Alive - Sept 15th

Miljenko Matijevic has taken rock music to a whole new level. Fusing the past, present and the future together, he has created an undeniable piece of art “A modern day led Zeppelin” (Mitch Lafon BW&BK). Matijevic’s vocals are better than ever, every song takes you on a journey; a journey that paints a portrait of his life and in doing so enables the listener to feel the song as if it were his own. A voice full of passion, power and depth, this is one album that seriously rocks. The album consists of everything from raw heavy guitars to a full orchestra which was recorded at Sky Walker Sound. Written, produced, designed and conceived by himself, he truly has embarked on a new beginning.

Track Listing:
It is built in Flash and you need to have a Flash plug in (get flash) to get it to work.

Pixlr is built for non-professionals, the users that have basic editing needs. It's not for large RAW images or for printing. It is merely a tool for editing web images to be posted on blogs, news-sites, social networks like Facebook, Bebo, image sites like Flikr, Photobucket etc.

The application is developed by a Swedish team. The most part is by a developer named Ola Sevandersson ola@pixlr.com

Since it is Flash based the question about how it runs is up to what kind of computer you have. If it is lagging you can try to shut down other web pages that might be running flash ads or close other software on your computer that is taking a lot of CPU.

Tags: graphics editing photoshop

<clipSource>http://www.pixlr.com/</clipSource>
