Democrat convention bounce....for McCain

The Democratic National Convention has begun and the poll numbers are bouncing, but not in the direction that most people anticipated.

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows Barack Obama attracting 44% of the vote while John McCain also earns 44%. When "leaners" are included, it’s still tied with Obama at 46% and McCain at 46%. Yesterday, with leaners, Obama had a three-point advantage over McCain

Obama is supported by 78% of Democrats while McCain gets the vote from 85% of Republicans. The GOP hopeful also has a slight advantage among unaffiliated voters.

Today’s results are the first based entirely upon interviews conducted since Joe Biden was named to be Obama’s running mate.

Obama’s support has declined in each of the last three individual nights of polling.

McCain is viewed favorably by 57% of the nation’s voters, Obama by 53% (see trends). Clinton is viewed favorably by 47%.

Senator Tom Coburn is unknown to most Americans, but the strange workings of the Senate Select Committee on Ethics could end up making the Oklahoma Republican far more popular than he is today.

Currently, 65% of voters nationwide don’t know enough about Coburn to have any opinion at all. He is best known in Washington as "Dr. No" for battling his colleagues over wasteful government spending.

Coburn is a medical doctor who continues to deliver about 400 babies a year. When told that it would be a violation of Senate rules to earn such outside income, Coburn stopped collecting money. He actually loses money for delivering the babies since he pays for malpractice insurance out of his own pocket. The latest Rasmussen Reports survey found that 77% of voters say such conduct is appropriate for a senator while only 8% disagree.

When told that Coburn would ignore the committee and continue delivering babies for free, 75% voiced a favorable opinion of the senator

55% Say Media Bias Bigger Problem Than Campaign Cash

Voters overwhelmingly believe that politicians will “break the rules to help people who give them a lot of money,” but most say there’s a bigger problem in politics today—media bias.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 55% believe media bias is more of a problem than big campaign contributions. Thirty-six percent (36%) disagree and think that campaign cash is a bigger problem.

People believe media bias is a bigger problem even though 63% believe most politicians will break the rules to help campaign contributors. Just 14% believe most politicians would refrain from breaking the rules for a donor.

Sixty-six percent (66%) disagree and think that, despite the annoyance factor, it’s better to put up with an election-year barrage of advertising rather than rely on the news media.

An earlier survey found that 49% believe most reporters are trying to help Barack Obama win the election this year. Just 14% believe they’re trying to help McCain.

Democrats Losing Voters

Well, okay, the news isn't quite that good. But Scott Rasmussen does find that during July, the number of Americans who describe themselves as Democrats fell by 2%, the first decline in a long time.

Maybe that's because people are starting to figure out that the Democrats are trying to keep the price of gasoline high. More likely, the tide that has been running in the Democrats' favor has finally peaked, and party identification is beginning to revert to a more "normal" breakdown; normal, at least, in the context of the last few years. It makes sense that as people start to focus on the upcoming election and the issues the candidates are talking about, some voters will be reminded of why they haven't supported the Democrats in the past and will be less inclined to associate themselves with that party.

For all the seismic shifts that have taken place over the last two weeks, we need to recognize that McCain has now abandoned virtually everything he's been campaigning on for the last year. There's really no more eloquent confirmation of that reality than the fact that McCain now appears determined to base his campaign on charges that Obama is unpatriotic and despises American soldiers.

It's complete and utter nonsense, and even conservative Republican Chuck Hagel agrees, but do we see media outrage? Of course not. That's reserved for obscure topics that only DC pundits care about.

No, the media has a different narrative. As I wrote last month, the media wants a close race, and is willing to flog a dated set of Quinnipiac polls every night to 'prove' that the race is closer than the Gallup (Obama +9) and Rasmussen (+5) tracking polls say. Those, of course, don't get reported,

Over half of American voters (51%) now believe the United States and its allies are winning the war on terror, the highest figure recorded in nearly four years by Rasmussen Reports in a nationwide survey.

Only 16% now think the terrorists are on top, while 27% view it as a stalemate. Prior to this week’s survey, the number who believe the terrorists are winning had never fallen below 20%.

Last July, just 36% thought the U.S. and its allies were winning. At that time, an equal number—36%–thought the terrorists were ahead … Only 23% now expect things to get worse in Iraq, down from 49% last July.

Appears those on the left may be losing their primary source of criticism. UH-OH. So when the polling was down he was a loser and wasn’t listening to the American Public. So I can only assume that now the left will pat him on the back and say good going, keep it up.

Media dragging economy down

Only 34% of Americans believe the United States has the world’s best economy, but 50% believe the media makes economic conditions appear worse than they really are, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey.

Only a quarter (25%) think reporters and media outlets present an accurate picture of the economy and 18% believe they actually portray it as better than it is. Just 34% trust reporters more when it comes to news on the economy, and 32% see stockbrokers as more reliable.

A plurality of Americans (41%) similarly believe that the media has tried to make the war in Iraq appear worse that it really is, while 26% say reporters have made it look better than reality and 25% think they’ve portrayed it accurately.

Over half of unaffiliated voters (55%) share this negative assessment of the media’s economic reporting.

The idea that reporters are trying to help Obama win in November has grown by five percentage points over the past month. The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey, taken just before the new controversy involving the New York Times erupted, found that 49% of voters believe most reporters will try to help the Democrat with their coverage, up from 44% a month ago.

Just 14% believe most reporters will try to help McCain win, little changed from 13% a month ago. Just one voter in four (24%) believes that most reporters will try to offer unbiased coverage.

45% say that most reporters would hide information if it hurt the candidate they wanted to win

The New York Times’ refusal to run an op-ed piece by John McCain challenging an article in the paper less than a week ago by Barack Obama is sure to further fuel the belief that much of the major media is biased in favor of the Democratic candidate

Lashing out with a conspicuous lack of dignity, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi publicly announced today that the President is a "total failure."

Her Senate counterpart Harry Reid chimed in:

Who would be afraid of him? He's got a 29 percent approval rating.

Pelousy and Weed can only dream of 29% approval ratings. According to a recent Rasmussen poll, the approval rating for Congress under their leadership has fallen to 9%. O.J. Simpson is probably more popular. Instead of throwing rocks at Bush, they ought to be keeping watch at their windows for villagers with torches and pitchforks.

If Bush is a total failure, what does that make these clowns?

Congress ratings plunge in poll

Congressional job approval ratings have sunk to their lowest point in three decades, according to the latest Gallup Poll.

Seventy-five percent disapprove of Congress and 10% have no opinion, the poll found.

"I think it's a combination of both the economy overall being in the doldrums and also certainly the high gas prices," said Donald Wolfensberger, director of the Congress Project

In the past three years, the number has fallen steadily from the 30s to now the teens.

Asked about the distaste for Congress, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., blamed Bush. "Any time you have a president that is down so, so far in poll numbers … it drags down any elected official, including us," he told reporters recently.

The race for the White House is tied. The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Saturday shows Barack Obama and John McCain each attract 43% of the vote. When "leaners" are included, Obama holds a statistically insignificant 47% to 46% advantage. Today is the first time that McCain’s support has moved above 45% since Obama clinched the nomination on June 3. It’s also the first time the candidates have been tied since Obama clinched the Democratic nomination (see recent daily results).
