Over at Cocktail Party Physics, Jennifer has cast a baleful eye on the various lists of the world’s greatest books, and decided that we really need is a list of the world’s greatest popular-science books. I think the goal is to find the top 100, but many nominations are pouring in from around the internets, and I suspect that a cool thousand will be rounded up without much problem.

This one is using a real person’s background to promote this scam e-mail. I spoke to his assistant and she told me that his name is being used quite extensively at the moment.

Mr. Gore-Randall is the COO of HBOS, which makes him a public figure. HBOS wants readers and potential clients to see that they are dealing with qualified experts by posting short curiculum vitaes of their management, which is obviously a basis for trust building.

Unfortunately this kind of public information is often misused for the Advance Fee or 419 kind of fraud run by Africans.

the Nerd Girls: a Website, blog, and collection of curricula aimed at celebrating "smart-girl individuality" and challenging "stereotypes and myths about women in science and engineering.

Apparently this site is controversial because it depicts smart women who are pretty, have a sense of style

young girls in particular are subjected to immense social pressure to look and act a certain way, and this can lead to low self-esteem, eating disorders and the like.

there is an annoying tendency for guys in science and engineering fields to act surprised and become, shall we say, overly enthusiastic at discovering a girl is both science-y smart and "teh hawt."

these are serious issues. The mistake many people make

My hope is

this question of whether a girl can be both smart and sexy, girly and geeky, science-y and sleek, will have become entirely moot.

Thanks to blow-hard winds, the United States has just become the world's largest generator of wind energy.

Germany previously held this distinction, though since the United States has about 26 times more land than Germany, the milestone isn't a huge surprise. Nonetheless, we weren't expected to reach this point until late 2009.

"Our wind energy capacity is growing faster than anyplace else," said Randall Swisher, the executive director of the American Wind Energy Association, the national trade organization for the wind energy industry. "So it's no longer really alternative energy. This is very mainstream."

Our company is looking for somebody who can work under pressure between the buildings and can change basic light fittings, have good knowledge of plumbing, general problem solving, painting and plastering if needed. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A U.S. watch list of terrorism suspects has passed 1 million records, corresponding to about 400,000 people, and a leading civil rights group said on Monday the number was far too high to be effective.

The Bush administration disagreed and called the list one of the most effective tools implemented after the September 11 hijacked plane attacks -- when a federal "no-fly" list contained just 16 people considered threats to aviation

The American Civil Liberties Union publicized the 1 million milestone with a news conference and release.

It said the watch list was an impediment to millions of travelers and called for changes, including tightening criteria for adding names, giving travelers a right to challenge their inclusion and improving procedures for taking wrongly included names off the list.
