Palin's Speech Raises Big Money -- for Obama

The downside to big television ratings: An Obama aide confirms to Ben Smith that Sen. Barack Obama has raised about $8 million from more than 130,000 donors since Gov. Sarah Palin's speech last night -- and is on pace to raise $10 million by the time McCain reaches the stage tonight.

Update: The Republican National Committee tells Jonathan Martin that they raised "more than $1 million" since Palin's speech.

Food and energy prices are coming down in part because of a global growth slowdown that could also cool the red hot U.S. export sector - the major bright spot in an economy still struggling with a massive housing bust.

If prices keep sliding, year-over-year inflation numbers - after hitting a 17-year high last month - could soon look much healthier, reducing fears that the Federal Reserve may have to raise interest rates to stamp out rising inflation expectations.

If the growth party is over around the world, the U.S. export boom will quickly fizzle.

A pullback by some of its overseas customers offers the latest bit of unhappy news for the U.S. economy, which this year has continued to grow - if only tepidly - in large measure thanks to slowing imports and rising exports.

The halo effect from exports could already be wearing off.

second-quarter GDP data showed U.S. corporate profits from foreign sources dropped 15% from first-quarter levels, due to softer worldwide economic conditions.

During MSNBC's Wednesday night live coverage

Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann, Tom Brokaw and others scoffed at the idea they had an anti-Sarah Palin agenda. Brokaw depicted the charge of liberal bias as a mere "tactic," by the GOP, Matthews played it off as just "an old, old conflict," and even tried to write off the media's fascination of Obama, as just a mere fondness of "the new."

Brokaw dismissed the contention of any real liberal bias:

This is a political tactic on their part. And the shorthand is, "Let's go after the media." And are they sorting out, for example, Fox or conservative blogs or others who have, in fact, been defending all of this? No what they want to do is just raise the specter that everything that America sees is controlled by a tiny band of Eastern liberal elites.

Norah O'Donnell insisted:

There is one important thing to point out. The media is not attacking Sarah Palin. The media has done investigative pieces, in their job, about the way Sarah Palin was chosen.

THE FACTS: The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle-income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.

Retired Couple Face Jail After Withholding London's 2012 Olympic Tax

A retired couple from Barnet, North London, are facing jail after refusing to pay the Olympic surcharge added to their council tax bill.

While not against the games, Tom and Rita Glenister maintain that it’s unfair that they should pay out for the cost of the 2012 games when they might not even be around to see them.

For the past two years the Glenisters have withheld £33.35 ($59) of their £2320 ($4130) council tax bill in protest. This is the amount they calculated would be passed on to the Greater London Authority as a precept for the games. The GLA is planning to raise its £1billion contribution through this London council tax supplement.

MSNBC's Norah O'Donell has given voice to the idea that Sarah Palin would be neglecting her child if she accepts the Republican vice presidential nomination. Of course, she does this by cloaking the question in the imaginary third person "some people are saying" ... Watch the video:

This is interesting, inasmuch as Norah O'Donnell has 1 1/2 year-old twins -- and a 1-month old. Meanwhile, her husband owns three restaurants -- and she is in Minnesota covering a political convention for a week!

Who's watching her kids during this presidential race this year?

... Okay, let's be fair. I honestly don't believe there is anything wrong with Norah covering this race. But her questions to guests do raise serious questions about the way she's covering this race.

The real reason? Kellogg's spends 96x more on marketing Frosted Flakes alone than General Mills spends on Wheaties ($11mm in 2007 vs $114 annually).

Gold translates to gold. But it does raise the question as to why sugar-coated cereal garners more marketing might/muscle than a breakfast cereal that is perceived as healthy. Is it because "They're Great !" or because kids will clamor for them in the supermarket aisle and around the breakfast table?

Kellogg certainly had the bigger pool of cash with which to lure Mr. Phelps. According to TNS Media Intelligence, Kellogg spent $11 million in measured media on Frosted Flakes alone in 2007. By comparison, General Mills' outlay for Wheaties was about $114,000.

122. What many here don't understand. It doesn't matter if it's true or not. RUMOR IS TRUTH.
The modern laws of media hype and political warfare have a useful tenet:
Repeat ANYTHING or raise false concern over ANYTHING and it is likely to be planted in the conscious/subconscious of many voters.
If people start to think that there might be something fishy with Palin's last kid (if hers), then that's FINE. One more doubt (whether tied to reality or not) is another hesitation at the ballot box.
GET WITH THE PROGRAM PEOPLE. The "rising above it" bullshit has served us so well in the past, hasn't it?
If you have problems with the story, then STFU and get out of the way of Dems who are engaged in MODERN POLITICAL WARFARE. Go tend your garden or some other pedestrian task, because the "concern trolls" are not helping shape the message.

My guess is that she has to stay. To dump her would make social conservatives walk. But her problems raise important questions about McCain's vetting process, his decision-making, his competence and his judgment.

Her problems have not gone unnoticed:

While there was no sign that her formal nomination this week was in jeopardy, the questions swirling around Ms. Palin on the first day of the Republican National Convention, already disrupted by Hurricane Gustav, brought anxiety to Republicans who worried that Democrats would use the selection of Ms. Palin to question Mr. McCain’s judgment and his ability to make crucial decisions.

And, you know, it all reflects on him. He's the one running for President, but I don't think the American people really want that kind of undisciplined loose cannon in the White House. Moreover, his "Country First" slogan should be "Do Whatever To Win". And from what we have seen, that's exactly what McCain is showing us.

The commission said it would work out how to share the money among those who paid to participate in the event.

Okereke-Onyiuke said in a full-page statement in Nigeria's Guardian newspaper on Aug. 21 that the dinner had never been intended to raise funds for Obama, but to sensitize and mobilize Africans worldwide.

LAGOS, NIGERIA -- Nigerian anti-graft police have seized $629,834 raised at a gala dinner in support of Sen. Barack Obama's presidential campaign, authorities said Sunday.

Obama's campaign said it was in no way affiliated with the group Africans for Obama and would not accept funds from the organization. Although the fundraising was not illegal in Nigeria, it is illegal under U.S. law for foreign groups to donate funds to American political parties.

Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, chairwoman of Africans for Obama and head of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, organized the fundraiser in Lagos on Aug. 11. A "platinum" ticket for a table of eight cost $21,226.

In July, STR Holdings, which supplies a protective material for solar panels, filed to raise up to $300 million, Chinese silicon and wafer manufacturer GCL Silicon Technology Holdings filed for an $862.5 million IPO and wind-project developer and operator First Wind Holdings Inc. filed to raise $450 million.

And so far this month, lithium-ion battery maker A123Systems filed to raise up to $175 million and Changing World Technologies Inc., which has developed technology to turn animal fat into biodiesel, submitted paperwork to raise up to $100 million.

But the bevy of greentech IPO filings doesn't yet signify a trend, industry watchers say.
